In many countries like Germany WhatsApp is not seen as a social network but as a communication tool, like SMS or calling. We don't even refer to it as WhatsApp anymore, just texting.

I think the MAIN thing 1) is that is has a shitload of more emojis and 2) it can save you money by only getting data/phonecall plan (cheaper than all three) and just using text data over data part.

Also more features, though most are cosmetic rather than actual utility. It's just a comfort thing, but ease of use is extremely important in making average people use your product.

WhatsApp does everything SMS and MMS does but better and plenty of stuff on top of that. Of course text messages, then read receipts, group messaging, sending files (pictures, videos, audio clips, documents), audio/video chat. SMS is... eh okay I guess for simple text messages, but even then a bit lacking. MMS is a pile of fucking garbage that had its moment somewhere in the early 2000s but died away because fuck it was awful. There's a reason everyone else moved on.

No, I'm not surprised that people absolutely love Whatsapp. The real thing that does surprise me like crazy is that people who use it give it such a hard time as far as paying for it or accepting that it shows ads.

I don't use it. I'm kind of anti-social and like it that way. i don't have many friends. Just my VERY VERY close family which is only a couple people and I don't enjoy texting and stuff so I don't think it's worth it to pay for a service like that or use it. but if I did I would definitely pay for it.

WhatsApp is very unpopular in the USA because it does the same job SMS/calling does but it requires data (3G, 4G, WiFi etc) to use. In the USA most plans have unlimited SMS/calls as standard, only data is considerably limited and you have to pay for usage. So why bother using WhatsApp? Get the point? Also, even if you don’t like SMS you’ll most likely end up using Facebook messenger instead (if you’re a normie).

In the rest of the world, it’s the exact opposite, SMS/calls plans aren’t as cheap and sometimes are even on par with data plans so most people take advantage of WhatsApp + WiFi (be it public, workplace or your home’s) for calling and messaging.

Telecoms in general are a shitty scam. For many years British Telecom has forced customers to pay line rental on a shitty copper line (or aluminium if you are unlucky). Even if you only use it for broadband.

At least in America you're far more likely to have a cell connection than a Wifi connection, especially now that stores are starting to crack down on wifi theft by banning clients from connecting to websites other than their menu/catalog.

As for attachments MMS is baked right into the phone and does not count against a data plan while SMS can send a single message to multiple people. It's good enough for most of society and is the cheaper option anyway. Whatsapp/Instagram is only good if you're already into Facebook but want to pretend you're still trendy.
