I upgraded from the "6 core" fx 6300 to the 6 core 8400. My 8400 is clocked lower (3.8ghz vs 4.3ghz) and runs twice as fast in single and multi and pulled half the wattage. Funny how that works

8c8t is faster than 6c12t though. Ht isnt some magic that make it faster than a cpu with 2 more physical cores

It's been running along happily in my NAS/torrent box/ssh gateway/IRC bouncer/chatbot host for the past 8 years or so. 1 core, 1 thread, 2 GB RAM. Originally 4 TB in hard disks, now 12.

It probably benefit games that do use all the threads as well.
A well done HT scheme actually allow you to improve the IPC of the CPU by allowing you to use times where the CPU would be otherwise stalled for something else, as in you "split" the CPU in two half speed virtual CPUs, but when one of the virtual CPUs stall, the other runs twice as fast.
So it ends being a bit of a 1+1=2.3 case;

IBM's SMT chips and ryzen are massively wider than intel's architecture which is why they get massively better scaling. Agner Fog comments in his architecture optimisation guide for zen that you should basically never disable SMT as you'll never saturate throughput without it.

IBM even offers 4-way SMT on existing chips and I think their upcoming revision to POWER will offer 8-way SMT.
