Turns out I'm too brainlet to properly configure my own kernel (ACPI error at the start).
Is there any way to get all the active modules and compiled-in flags from the running system? I want to boot from something with generic kernel (like arch) and copy the active configuration into my own config.
I don't go with generic for my laptop, because I don't want to lose the convenience of the EFISTUB and a couple of other options.
jesus christ, no wonder wayland has no adoption. Everything is such a shitshow, especially if you're on nvidia. >sway is unusable on nvidia >plasma is unusable on nvidia >orbment is abandoned >velox is missing shared libraries on start >orbital fails to compile >liri can't run unless you're lucky to have the right qt >maynard is ded >way-cooler fails to compile >perceptia segfaults on start >waymonad is unusable >enlightenment is questionable
Gnome is literally my last option next to writing my own.
David Turner
>Be complete assholes and don't use the standard API >Push your own shitty proprietary garbage instead >Surprised when everybody refuses to support it or treats it like a second-class citizen Throw your shitty GPU out and buy an AMD one. You'll thank me later.
Luke Thomas
i want to as soon as i have the money, nvidia is fucking awful on linux.
Dylan Butler
>Gnome good luck with that that shit was crashing daily on me because extensions Gnome devs, in their infinite wisdom, decided that extensions should directly manipulate global program state instead of using an API like everyone else does this means that if a new version of Gnome introduces some changes, any of your extensions can crash the whole desktop if they try to do an invalid operation you also have to put your full trust in every extension you have because it literally has full access to the whole desktop
William Foster
Works great on Radeon
Gavin Baker
I'm actually a developer for wlroots, which is used by several of the wayland compositors listed, and specifically did the part involving GPUs. Holy shit, is AMD a much better choice for Linux, especially in the last couple of years. Nouveau is decent for older cards, but you're fucked if you bought a recent Nvidia card. We've vowed to NEVER support shitty APIs only used by proprietary drivers, so until Nvidia stops being such cunts and actually supports the APIs that everybody else (especially Mesa) uses, we will never support them.
Camden Jackson
good to see there's still someone with integrity too many people have been bending over backwards for anti-customer businesses like Nvidia
Brody Wilson
KDE is refusing to support them too, but for more technical reasons. Basically, they don't want to support two different APIs and make their code way more complicated.
Eli Morris
>we will never support them. Until you support NVIDIA, no one will ever support YOU. RHEL uses nvidia on its workstations, you think you have any chance at BULLYING RHEL in to changing their billion dollar contracts? Wayland is garbage and will never be more then an alpha enthusiasts project
Grayson Jackson
Not him but I really wish AMD made the equivalent of a GF 1050. As in "cheap, low-power card that can also drive four monitors". Last I looked nothing below an RX 570 does that, at least among things recent enough that AMDGPU supports them. (And we all know that even if they say they have 'experimental' support, they're never really gonna bother with earlier GCN chips)
Adam Martin
>Until you support NVIDIA, no one will ever support YOU. >RHEL uses nvidia on its workstations, you think you have any chance at BULLYING RHEL in to changing their billion dollar contracts? not him, but who cares about RHEL? RHEL ships with GNOME and they use their own libraries, not wlroots this doesn't affect RHEL in any way, and GNOME is actually implementing support for Nvidia so what's your point? this is peak Jow Forums - Idiots Talking About Shit They Don't Understand
Noah Hall
>Until you support NVIDIA That's the completely wrong attitude, fuckface. It;s completely up to Nvidia to support the existing APIs, not us to bend over backwards and suck their cock. They claim to "support Wayland", but they fucking don't. They support EGLStreams, which is just some shitty garbage that nobody asked for.
John Kelly
>wayland wont support nvidia because of STALLMAN level aspergers "political" agenda No.Even on AMD gear wayland is pure shit, lacks performance, and is a steaming pile of shit >I, NVIDIA, have innovated in the tech industry for decades. >oh no nvidia you are doing it WRONG you have to do it this way that we tell you >fuck off kid, we innovate, we create, we dont use shit that fucks up performnace Yeah, i dont see you ever gaining any leeway here
Nolan Parker
umm... what? number of connectors doesn't equal number of monitors because you can daisy-chain DisplayPort 1.2 I should know, I use this at work a cheap RX 550 and non-chinkshit monitors should work just fine
Dylan Brooks
>Even on AMD gear wayland is pure shit, lacks performance, and is a steaming pile of shit And you clearly don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Was the last time you used AMD in the fglrx days or some bullshit? AMD is extremely good on Linux. I'm not going to specifically say they're "good on wayland", because they're good with fucking everything. Wayland compositors use exactly the same drivers that Xorg does.
>Yeah, i dont see you ever gaining any leeway here Nvidia users are the fucking worst. We don't want to support/enabled entitled shiteaters like yourself too.
I "upgraded" from a 480 gtx to a rx 250. Worse decision in my life and i sent it back the very next day.
Still on that 480 gtx
>Nvidia users are the fucking worst Wayland supporters are the fucking worst. They blatantly lie to you to get you to use their shitty wayland and then you get nothing fucked up rendering and artifacts. You're just jealous of what NVidia has done and how you didnt think to do that originally. AKA wayland devs cannot INNOVATE they only reproduce
Asher Cooper
>and non-chinkshit monitors Well yeah, I could replace my monitors, but then I'm back in the lots of money zone. None of my screens have a DP connector, let alone two of them for daisy-chaining.
Ayden Brooks
>rx 250 If you had bought that new, that's right on the cusp of when AMD went with their new amdgpu driver over radeon, before it had properly matured. You were slightly too early. I've tested RX 550s, R9 270Xs, HD 7950s, HD 6950s, and they all are fucking great. The RX 550 is currently my main GPU. >Wayland supporters are the fucking worst. They blatantly lie to you to get you to use their shitty wayland and then you get nothing fucked up rendering and artifacts. >You're just jealous of what NVidia has done and how you didnt think to do that originally. >AKA wayland devs cannot INNOVATE they only reproduce This is all complete drivel. There is absolutely nothing worth refuting, because of how blatantly wrong and stupid it is.
Lucas Parker
>writing my own Yeah, sure, you totally possess the knowledge to do that, you pretentious poser.
Bentley Watson
>I "upgraded" from a 480 gtx to a rx 250 >I upgraded from flagship gaming GPU to a low-end GPU used primarily to display the desktop hahaha what? you're actually retarded, aren't you?
what kind of monitors don't have fucking DP? it's the cheapest connector because you don't have to pay royalties
Gavin Davis
>>what kind of monitors don't have fucking DP? Ones I bought in like 2011?
Evan Torres
>i cant provide any retort, but believe me you're wrong Typical wayland dev
Kevin Morgan
is this an attempt at trolling? is pic related you? because that's sad user, that' very very sad
>I upgraded from flagship gaming GPU to a low-end GPU used primarily to display the desktop I bought the gtx in 2010, when this system was built. I no longer needed a gaming gpu, so i went with the rx 250(2013), just enough to pre-render 1080p.
Connor Thompson
show me on the doll where wayland touched you
Connor Nguyen
Bump. Please help.

Alright red alert, I need a serious answer. Got fired from my manufacturing job after getting a respiratory issue that isn't going away soon enough, and I'm balls deep in uninsured medical bills with more on the way because I'm trying to find a pulmonary specialist that takes patients without insurance. That's the end of the blog part. So I've been learning the basics of html/css, and I have experience owning/managing two service businesses. Did logos, SEO, managed the website, advertised, so I know I can sell my services. But here's what I want to do, and I'd like to hear from folks who may know more about it, I'd (optimally) like to utilize html/css to design and develop websites for small compaies and other entities. What is probably most practical is to just do the estimate, use wix, whip out some shit real fast and profit. Where do I start with this, because I need money, have half a brain, but can't do any sort of physical work, and would like to get on this as soon as possible.

zcat /proc/config.gz
Christopher Hill
On my system (Debian) its in /boot instead of /proc, look there if you don't see it
Gabriel Collins
/proc is a virtual filesystem populated by the kernel, so it should be there no matter that the distro is.
Henry Hughes
There are 2 netcats. GNU's and BSD's. Which one is the not deprecated one?
Brayden Wood
Use the BSD one.
Levi Clark
Thanks, I just looked it up and I will use the GNU one.
William Hughes
idk. Maybe Debian does something weird, wouldn't be the first time.
Also, any reason why you need the windows version of counter-troll?
Camden Butler
Doesn't that show the kernel config itself and not the currently active/loaded components? Not true, you can enable kernel config access and explicitly disable the /proc entry. In that case you can use config extract script on your kernel. Script is provided with vanilla Linux archive.
Nathan Sanders
>currently active modles lsmod

hai friends! how to make a bootable ubuntu usb without losing all the data on my flash drive?
>i only have one flash drive (32 gb) and a laptop >i cannot get rid of the files >laptop is on ubuntu 16.04.5
Justin Scott
is your flash drive FAT32?
Jonathan Jenkins
no, ext3
Nolan Green
Thanks, but that doesn't show the compiled-in parameters that are used, correct?
I'm trying to think of the best way to strip the kernel of everything unneeded for my actual PC.
Dylan Wood
Possible to do, but don't expect it to be a few clicks or one dd command First you have to unpack the ISO on the flash drive then set up a bootloaders. Choices are. -use exlinux shallowsky.com/linux/extlinux.html -use grub legacy
Joshua Barnes
>strip the kernel of everything unneeded for my actual PC Use localmodcfg with modprobed-db
- if (key == KEY_TAB && state == WL_KEYBOARD_KEY_STATE_PRESSED) + if (key == KEY_SPACE && state == WL_KEYBOARD_KEY_STATE_PRESSED) switcher_next(switcher); }
gnome [or mutter] makes mpv micro stutter wayland future imo is LXQt with kwin, E, sway or liri, tho weston is usable as well and is the one thing that works for sure - like that mpv gnome thing
Matthew Phillips
why is right clicking in firefox like this in weston it's the only xwayland thing that does it
would you consider switching super+tab to super+space for window switching, it's much easier
Leo Scott
wayland is for way more than the laughably small desktop share desu what do you think runs your navigation?
Robert Anderson
>No.Even on AMD gear wayland is pure shit, lacks performance, and is a steaming pile of shit wrong weston, you know, the thing that comes with wayland, works fine, unlike sway which lags and is not quite usable afaik t. ATi
Austin Hill
>it works fine [on amd] >but it doesn't actually >also i don't use an amd card good post
Chase Williams
what
the minor issues are xwayland related fucktard not gpu related
Ryder Moore
yeah i don't use amd, i use an even older card how stupid do you feel rn
Liam Nguyen
>you're correct >bet you feel stupid now, huh good post
Dominic Garcia
Not wayland thats for sure lol
Cameron Scott
>ATi =/= AMD riight
>>reeeeee on AMD gear wayland is pure shit, lacks performance, and is a steaming pile of shit >wayland works fine on my pre historic card >>bet you feel stupid now, huh i bet you do
Lucas Flores
how is that for sure?
William Williams
Is there a way to get ubuntu but without all the bloat/extra crap?
Grayson Barnes
It wouldnt run on anything. Navigation is a heavily embedded system and wayland is bloat and feature creep for the sake of feature creep. No one would use it proffesionally
Brody Hernandez
mini.iso installer
Hunter Evans
Will arch + gentoo have better wine performance than debian? Am i wrong to assume newer package = better performance?
Nolan Young
>what is ivi you obviously know shit as expected from a proud nVIDIOT
Henry Baker
in the case of wine: no, the assumption is right.
Aiden Thomas
>some no name irrelevant small project rivals RHEL somehow K.
Im too brainlet to figure out how to get a good sources.list going with mesa drivers and unstable softwares
Sebastian King

>wayland devs >lets do what nvidia does, but make it different!!!! >introducing Wayland 1.0 The Car >same thing that nvidia does, but we have square tires instead of round! CAUSE FUCK NVIDIA RIGHT LMAO

>mini system in UEFI mode
>While the minimal iso image is handy, it isn't useful for installing on UEFI-based systems that you want to run in UEFI mode. The mini iso lacks the proper files for booting the computer in UEFI mode. Thus, the computer will boot in BIOS compatibility mode, and the installation will be in BIOS mode. Great. What do?
Evan Ross
Try one of those "alternate install" ISOs? They are big, full featured ISOs but rather than booting into a live system with a gui installer they start a debian-style text interface installer with all of its options.
Nathaniel Robinson
source
Kayden Morris
yet I forget: the alternate ISO is "marketed as" a server installer, but it can install any ubuntu desktop including xubuntu, kubuntu, ubuntu-mate etc. just fine.
Noah Wilson
Why does canonical threat their users as stupid
Jonathan Baker
Anyone have an issue with certain xfce keyboard shortcuts not working in xubuntu? It's only certain shortcuts that stopped working for no apparent reason this morning and I've tried resetting all the shortcuts and deleting the keyboard shortcuts xml. Don't know what to do, in all honesty.

>Hear about DXVK for the first time a few days ago on Wendell's collab video in Linus' channel >Decide to try it out even though I have a crappy GTX 760 >Click on the install script for Witcher 3 on Lutris, don't fiddle with any Wine settings at all and just let the script do its thing >mfw I'm actually fucking running The Witcher 3 on my sub-par hardware on GNU/Linux at playable framerates
He didn't specify settings and he didn't give avg framerate over time, but if he's playing at medium I would expect around 40 when it's quiet and drops to 30 during combat on a 760.
With the settings used in that screenshot, 50-60 FPS
Obviously it's not perfect but my jaw dropped that it's even playable. Having it translate DX11 instructions to Vulkan on the fly on an old GTX 760 and stay above 30 FPS is a miracle in my eyes.
On most other games I've tried that require DX11 and don't play well with wined3d's default, I've gotten smooth 55-60 FPS experiences (such as Endless Space 2 and Cuphead for example)
I've also been trying Lutris for the first time and it's a breeze to use. Much better than manually managing winebottles via the terminal
