Sounds like a personal problem. Set up PLEX for my grandma and she has a roku TV. Everything I get from BTN/PTP plays just fine.
Only issue we've had the past two months was subtitles, though we fixed it with that "burn subtitles" option or whatever.

It's a Roku 2 plugged into an HDTV via HDMI. .mkv files don't play sound through the regular Roku Media Player app via USB. If I run it through the Handbrake Roku 720p .m4v basic settings, it works as intended for her. I've go an 8-core AMD CPU, so I'm not too choked up about converting the files for her, but it's still annoying that I can't just drag and drop and have it work for her

They cost a few bucks and support virtually every format, hardware decoding most. 10bit x264 is the exception, leaving weebs out in the cold, but 10bit hevc is fine. Boot in seconds if using LE and have the most features of any playback device that isn't an Intel PC. A low power minipc with an eGPU is the only better option, and that is 25 times more expensive.

I run multiple plex servers. I have my main movies + tv one running off my NAS, then I have another server just off my computer for dumping something quick that I don't want to be permanent. Then from the apps it is really easy to switch between then. I've never tried indexing porn, not sure how well of a job it would do with that.
