I don't do computing on the go.
Any screen under 24" is too small for me.
Laptops get too hot and throttle.
You get less bang for your buck compared to a desktop.

You only need a computer at home and at work anyways. And usually they can provide you with a decent desktop, if your company doesn't suck balls.

The only portable I'd get would be a pocket umpc.

I have about ten Thinkpads and a Dell and two desktops. Most of the notebooks use external peripherals because laptop ergonomics can never not be hot garbage.

I bring a Pad and my phone on the road, but at home its far more comfortable to use notebooks like desktops and take advantage of the batteries as built in UPS.

I own like 5 laptops and only use them to fap in bed or to tune my car. Also on the rare occasion that I travel for work and need to bring a machine with me. Other than that there's literally no other reason.

Come on, usually just the monitor draws 50-100 W regardless of what the computer does. But also, desktop components just aren't nearly as power-optimized as laptop parts are. The CPU/GPU are already in power-saving mode when idle, it's all about the power draw of peripheral components of various kinds.

I bought an Acer Nitro 5 for $600 from Best Buy. It has an i5-7300hq, 1050ti 8GB of ram, and 256GB SSD. It's a really good laptop. It's really thin and light for a gaming laptop and it plays all my shitty Japanese RPGs and visual novels really well. Doesn't overheat or anything, I'm impressed for the price. Only reason I didn't build a desktop is because I live in a cubby and don't have the room for it. Still I'm happy with it, the performance is great for the price and I love being able to play games in bed with it.

I have a 7 year old Thinkpad T420 too.

Given it's small, it's way easier than a desktop. I spent half a day picking shit apart, cleaning all the fans and hard drives and the fucking case itself. Plus of course there is the keyboard and mouse and screens. The only downside with laptop cleaning is that you can't use water.
