Usenet

What even is usenet? Is it still alive? What can one find on it?

A backbone of NNTP servers.
Yes.
Mostly trap porn.

Why would you eat raw pickles?

resist the hipster urge and accept this old stuff is only good for a history lesson

Usenet... that takes me back. Is that service still in operation?

You used to be able to find everything from advice on any topic imaginable to music and porn. There's probably no legit use for it now... heck even web based forum traffic is way down.

It's still around. Still used for piracy quite a bit. Believe it or not, it's faster and more secure than torrents. It's just not free.

damn i feel old now

More secure in what sense?

Usenet uses an SSL tunnel. No one can see what you download, only what you upload. Unlike torrents, which require a VPN for the same level of security.

Fidonet? BBS?

>Mostly trap porn.
How does one browse a usenet? Asking for a friend.

Cucumbers aren't just for pickling, tripfag.

It's the proof that normies ruin stuff.

Here's a publicly accessible news server:

>BBS
that's just embarrassing, grandpa

>implying we won't end up using a bbs over ssh over tor when (((they))) exodus us from the web

It seems pretty ded.

Not really, there are still quite a few groups with traffic.

I use Usenet for all my media server downloads. Abandoned torrents because they're slower, less secure against mpaa niggers, and getting anything good requires being on a private tracker where you have to keep a good ratio. Fuck that. $8/mo plus a few tens of dollars for lifetime subs on a few indexers and I'm done. No uploading. No worrying about speed (always get at least 500mb/s). NzbGet is incredible software and automates the downloading completely.

The only thing Usenet isn't good for is obscure shit, or unpopular old things. The retention depends on the provider you're using, but most only retain ~2000 days of binaries.

But you get fined for sharing, not for downloading.

>What even is usenet?
Private servers that you pay to access.
>Is it still alive?
Barely.
>What can one find on it?
The same shit you can find on torrents, but way less content usually. There was only one thing that I found on Usenet that I couldn't find on torrents, and that was a fan edit of Twin Peaks.

>Barely
Basically all reasonable popular content is mirrored to Usenet, and when a group posts directly to Usenet on release, it's available for full speed download far before a torrent swarm has bootstrapped itself to a useful state. Lot's of times you can grab content from Usenet then start seeding it during the glorious 99% leach phase for those ratio gainz.

I still browse all.religion.slack.

Pickles aren't cooked they too are raw they're just pickled

all groups outside of alt.binaries are dead and full of generic "Buy viagra here"

>Is that service still in operation?
Yes, but most binaries are in 800 rar pieces and need ask to uploaders for passwords

Are they going old school with 1.44MB sized portions?

by any chance?

Miss the days of ISPs bundling in usenet access with their service. It was a useless troll farm for discussion, but great for filling up on warez and p0rn.

>It was a useless troll farm for discussion
Depends on where you went. Most Internet FAQ's started on usenet so that implies good discussions.

>Depends on where you went
True, if you found an active group with a functional set of mods, it could be some slow fun. It rarely lasts and the only real defense is a killfile a million miles long to block out the shitters.

Eternal summer

I was looking for the Missing Pieces.

NZBget + radarr/sonarr + plex is working very well for me on my NAS. Automatic HQ downloads, renamed and picked up by Plex, ready to cast to any tv in the house. Usenets quality has gone down in recent years, but if you have a decent indexer (i.e. paid) its miles better than having to deal with torrents and ratios.

/comfy/ af

Got this setup sans the Plex botnet. It's glorious.

They're not full of takedowns? What provider do you use?

There are shitloads of takedowns, but encrypted headers + paid indexer = stealth as fuck. Sometimes sonarr/radarr will cycle through a dozen items to get something intact but only rarely will it fail. Plus for brand new releases things are grabbed before takedowns are even processed.

Provider is newshosting. Indexers are NZBgeek, DOGnzb, Anizb (these three catch most stuff), NZBNoob, nzb-tortuga and Drunken Slug. I'm on the free tier of tortuga and slug, got a lifetime sub to geek, and three years on dog.

thank you based user, i hadn't consumed media really for the last 4 years so i dropped my sources, but i had always been using usenet and found it incredibly based. i'll have to setup with these guys

though ideally i'd get a provider i can buy with BTC and only connect via VPN, that might be paranoia tho

>Eternal summer
Close, but no. For Usenet, the correct term is The September That Never Ended.

All my 4k creampie porn and imagesets came from usenet. Fuck being a torrent ratio cúck for large 4k content like that. Rather buy into the "lel pay2pirate" meme than being a cùck

>What can one find on it?
Snuh cascades, performance art, kooks, flames, racist pizza delivery drivers.
