18 year old fresh out of high school here, allow me to interject for a moment. I have an interesting story about schools and computers.

I went to a public school in an area which is lower middle class, that some may even consider poor and run down. There are a shitload of students of colored variety that make a fantastic mess of every goddamn school resource or piece of property, and we can't have nice things specifically because these apes won't allow it. We had Winblows 7 laptops my Freshman year, but the nig nogs kept visiting porn sites (there's so many that the school IT dept couldn't keep blocking them all even with the same blacklist used by banks and shit) so of course everything had popup malware and 9773783983 toolbars in IE. It was disgusting. So a lot of the 1337 h4x0r trenchcoat kids like myself started making Ubuntu flash drives and booting them on those laptops. The staff got pissed and the district decided to invest in Chromebooks instead. Hard to fuck up a browser and wallpaper, right? Wrong. Of course they get the $150 Dell ones. By my Senior year almost everyone of them was missing at least three keys, most had the palm rests and display bezels fucked up, and a lot of them had missing batteries and had to be used plugged in. Since the software wasn't entertaining enough, negroids of course broke the hardware

Ctrl+F to find shit you need is nice, but it's kinda ruined when all the dindu tribespeople decide to destroy the laptops like chimpanzees. Half my classes I just grabbed the physical copies of the textbooks from the back of the room. Eventually I bought my own laptop that looked like the ones used there and installed Lubuntu, and just did my work on that. If there was anything I actually learned at school, it's that some people are just born stupid and can't be fixed.

Google is a bit of a rabbit hole and teachers were already pissed off by the blacklist when they found blocked sites under the "games" catagory that they wanted to use as part of their class work. I actually got in the habit of using my phone as a hot spot when I couldn't access certain websites that I needed as sources for assignments.

In a sane and reasonable world the network could just be monitored for words like "porn" or "sex" or "flash games" and the individual students could be punished based on who was logged in for the searches. But even that wouldn't be reliable since half the brainlets never logged out before putting the laptops away.

Hmm, I agree that an overactive blocker can be extremely difficult to work with, but I feel like a heavily enforced policy + flagging suspicious words in logs (but not insta-blocking) could work. E.g. when kids actively try to play games when they're not supposed to, discipline them instead of playing catch-up. Every now and then the network admins could look through the flagged logs for actual violations.

this exists, I know because my school used it. When blocked it would say that its because it found a keyword in the page. it had the downside of blocking legitimate research. for example, when looking up old texts from the bible or some shit and it has words like adultery or whore. also blocked pages talking about marijuana and tobacco when we were asked to research those topics.

I'm not sure the current generation has it better. Sure, they can do more technology-wise. We had to have a pass issued by the school and ask for the key to the computer room if we wanted to try something out after hours.

But we also had fun. We played, we went to the gym hall for fun like volleyball in the afternoon. Current generation has their faces glued to their smartphones all the time. One day they'll wake up, ask themselves where their youth has gone and they'll realize, they've wasted the best time of their lives.

If the administrators are competent they use a whitelist and teachers have teacher accounts that can temporarily add sites to them (if they use a site all the time they can contact the admin and have it added to general whitelist). Good luck connecting to a VPN in that case.
