It was technically already a problem around 2006-2007 when the gate dielectric got too thin. That was solved with more materials engineering because the gate dielectric was always silicon oxide at that point as a part of how people did fabbing at the time, and it was easy. You couldn't use SiO2 anymore when the the 65 nm -> 45 nm transition happened so they used different materials now for that and it solved the issue up until now. Even now, most commodity electronics keep above that lithography size so they don't have to deal with the increased costs to make things smaller.

The prediction is around 5 nm or so, you run into the same issue as back then but not only for the gate dielectric but literally every part of the transistor. The solution seems to be the same as back then, use more materials engineering to get around the limit. So that's where stuff like GaAsFETs and carbon nanotube come in. But that comes at the cost of pretty much leaving silicon behind, which is about time, with how much has been squeezed from it.

Chinese can just copy and manufacture cheaply. That's OK as long as they have Western designs to steal and you can throw out half of their production that's not up to standard and still make a profit.

However they will never grow beyond this. The reason for this is that Chinese are the greediest people on this planet. That means they cut corners every step of the way and manufacture as cheaply and shittily as they can get away with. They're not only fucking the customer with this approach, but also themselves. Their newly built houses literally crumble away after just three years. Their environment is so polluted that cancer is now a major cause of death in even the 30 - 50 year olds. And of course they die in traffic, in elevators, on escalators, at machines at work because there are zero safety regulations.

In short, it sucks to be a Chink, but that's mainly due to the Chinks' own mentality.

True, they make some stuff that's up to standards. But that also comes at world market prices, so that it raises the question: Why manufacture in China when it costs the same plus you have to ship it around half the world plus you have to wait like 55 days for a container ship to arrive?
So that's obviously a field in which China is no competition. The other is cheaply made stuff, which is like 90% of their output. I'm not talking about iPhones, but parts. Switches, sockets, small PCBs, connectors etc.

Dude, even the rich Chinese complain about China. Like you get a luxury appartment, but the water doesn't run and all the sockets and light switches are crooked because even if it costs 5 million RMB, it's made cheaply.
