This affects all tens of billions of images (that's the estimate I've read) hosted on Tumblr.
The worst affected by this are comics that are larger than 1280px width. The text is unreadable in many of them without the "_raw" option that existed up until 2 days ago.

I'm certain they still have them. They just blocked outside access to them. At their scale it's not storage that costs much money, it's server bandwidth. They're testing the waters to see how much they can cut, quietly and unannounced.
the most pissing thing, they could upgrade images to 2160 size which is long due anyway, fullhd vertical doesn't cut it anymore

It may be cutting costs in one sense, but there's going to be a shit load of processing involved in converting these images down, and that's going to add costs back up. The bandwidth might end up just being cheaper.

There's already tons of projects that scrape tumblr's API. Ripme is the first one that comes to mind.
The problem is not scraping the API, that's the easy bit. The problem is automatically classifying what you want to scrape. You want pictures of thots but you don't want pictures of their cats.

This is actually a pretty big loss. Not that many people knew about it but Tumblr was pretty much the only site of its kind to do this: no matter how big the file you uploaded, the raw would never be resized or compressed.

They've been wanting to do this for years now. Moving under Verizon only amplifies that. Verizon wants tumblr to be something like squarespace. A website making platform where people can blog and what have you, and appeal to advertisers (especially family friendly ones). They don't care about the porn or the activists or whatever the fuck people think tumblr is about, they just want money.
