Hey fellas, red pill me on e-readers. Tired (literally) of crappy LCD screens and these seem good.
What is this bullshit with ads and book DRMs? Can I crack that and upload my .pdfs?

Maybe

I've had a Paperwhite and no problem pirating so far.

So just plug and play or does it require a software medium?

Kobos are better for pirating. You can pirate on kindles but you don't even want to. Instead of fucking around you could just get one that supports all the file formats natively. Like a kobo.

You can remove DRM using calibre

Just drag over the mobi files like it's 3 tb of chubby porn.

Chinks needs to make a E-ink/E-paper monitor with r with displayport.
It doesn't even need a stand just give me a Vesa mount.

Doesn't even need to be touchscreen infact I'd prefer it not to be.
Allow me to turn off the backlight with a switch and bonus points for a internal battery.

I'd even settle for black & white till color is more defined because I'll mainly use it for programming or blueprints/schematics.

Don't buy a Kindle. Being restricted to Mobi is a bugger Anything else is ok.

E-readers are fucking a amzing tho

Don't forget to convert everything to .mobis first and hope it doesn't break the formatting

I just want to put .pdf off piratebay. Do these devices convert images to B&W automatically?

For optimal experience, get a kobo and just throw shit on there. Calibre is nice since it keeps track of metadata and shit, but it isn't needed.

Oh fuck, those are expensive. At most, I can afford a kindle 8 and pocketbook

Thanks

Try the used market.

Yep

Yes, everything is displayed in grayscale.
The default PDF reader is utter shit on both kobo and kindle. It's slow as fuck if you need to zoom. Fortunately you can install koreader on a kobo, it works really well.

Yeah but Kobo doesn't sell the Glo HD anymore, the Aura models cost more than the Kindle Paperwhite 3 and have inferior specs.

Ughh what is all this with DRM and zoom and file conversions. I thought it was easy and simple like a symbian smartphone or something.

kindle = mobi
kobo = epub

Just choose one and you'll focus mostly on one file format to fuck around with. I recommend the latter.

Check out the new Kobo Clara HD.
Same screen and price as the Paperwhite 3 but with 8GB of storage and color temperature control (f.lux/redshift type thing).

Stagnated technology with absurd prices. Anything bigger than a smartphone is a fucking robbery.

cant you fuXor kindles to take ePub? or is that just applicabl for non-eink versions?

Am I just unlucky or is the OCR on most ebooks just really bad, 90% have frequent rn/m mistakes and many are littered with every kind of mistake. The copy of The Dispossessed I downloaded was fucking atrocious.

Books you buy may or may not have drm that is apparently piss easy to remove. Personally, I've never tried - if I want a non-drm file I just download it/convert if necessary.

Goddamn, just bought a Paperwhite last year.
Extremely tempted but can't justify purchase because it's still the same display.

>Kobo Clara HD
>basically a refresh of Glo HD
This is just the thing I've been waiting for since last fall when I started looking into e-readers. Fukken ordered

Unless you need pictures and perfect fucked up page formatting pds are by far the absolute shit-tier of ebook formats, avoid at all costs on an e-ink reader.

Best e-reader for Manga? Thought about Kindle Manga but only avaliable in Japan and such a hassle to get one here.

No one ever in these threads recommends a Pocketbook. I got the Pocketbook Inkpad 3, since it seemed to have everything apart from waterproofing, like microSD slot, sound and good ppi screen. It has been going great so far. Also the OS seems to be going fine, it kinda looks like Android, but it haven't had any crashes which seems to be present on those chinese android e-readers.

E-readers are really bad for reading PDFs.

That's because it costs an arm and a leg if you're in the US. I asked if they ship to the US and they said no, so eBay is the only option.

You don't read that many books anyway. You think you'll read more books when you buy it but then you don't.

>download cracked Abby Fine Reader
>convert PDF to text
>save as any e-book format
>???
>profit

Don't get a kindle if you want to read PDFs without scrolling every 10 seconds. Or anything with pictures. You need , at the very least, an 8 inch reader and preferably a 10 inch reader like pic related.

We have this thread every fucking day

I haven't seen an ereader thread in a week.

Yes

This

Do not buy a Kindle

This depends totally on use case. A paperwhite is great for reading books. If your goal is full page pdf then you are better off with a tablet. Cheaper, bigger, and color.

I read a lot, so i thought of getting an ereader too. What are the options with android? If i could read Jow Forums and manga on it, that would be fucking awesome.

Does everyone here when they say they read a lot mean manga and not actual literature?

If you want to browse the net and read manage just get an android tablet.

400 usd for that shit, no thx.

PDF's are probably the worst format for ereaders, they're a fixed formatting so you have zoom in on them. Mobi files are the format you need for Kindles, Calibre has the conversion tools you need to convert almost anything (ePub etc) to the right format. There's also DRM stripping plugins but if you download a book in Mobi off a tracker or whatever it'll have the DRM stripped already. I'd get a cheap/second hand reader and just download everything in mobi/epub unless you're mainly going to be reading comics/manga or technical books that need PDF formatting.

Also, get into the Bibliotik tracker. There's a really good community that rip books from digital libraries and keep them in Retail formatting.

>10 inches tho
$400, can pay chicks to come sit in my lap and read to me. Its a fucking e-ink reader. Why.

>Can I crack that and upload my .pdfs?
WHAT THE FUCK???

What is this bullshit? It's like buying a car with factory welded hood and a trunk. This world has gone to utter shit.

What are you talking about? Piracy is piss easy on Kindles.

I actually read both manga and literature.
Meh. I have eyesight problems, so if i read a lot of stuff my sight gets worse, and than i need my eyes to rest fot a couple of days before reading again. Maybe eink would be better for me.

I'm talking about buying locked tech in general.

Info dump...

PDFs on e-readers tends to suck, they're low-power devices. PDFs can't reflow text either. Suggest epub or mobi

Hardware:
I love my Kobo aura one. Lots of people like other kobos, lots of people like the paperwhite. Part of the reason I chose Kobo was no ads. Don't get a nook.

Software:
Calibre is a must for managing your ebook library.
It converts between mobi and epub seamlessly - you can even set it up to convert on the fly when transferring books.
It has plugins to remove drm as well.

Book sources:
library genesis
#bookz on undernet
#ebooks on irchighway

Attached: 1533978296022.jpg (1152x768, 117K)

Yes eInk is much better on your eyes than even the highest quality ips lcd screen.

Anything with pictures will look like crap with eink unfortunately.

>Part of the reason I chose Kobo was no ads
There is a(i)ds on ereaders? What the actual fuck?

The cheaper version of the kindle has ads for a screensaver. I don't know if other e-readers have that

You can buy Kindle for 10? 20? USD less if you choose the version with ads on lockscreen and in book list view (the latter can be removed in settings). There are hacks for that, but I couldn't be bothered. After a month or w/e of not connecting to wi-fi I don't even get books ads anymore, only some generic picture with 'find your next favourite book' in big letters and smaller something about a massive book collection in Kindle bookstore.

Well other e-readers are more expensive than even the no ads Kindle version so what does it matter anyway.

Ok, this is what I need;
ereader with NO internet connection, with SD card slot, with solar panel at the back, fully crackable, with pdf support.

Is that too much to as in this day and age?

>solar panel
fuck for? eink batteries lasts an age as is. An age more than LCD, anyway.
>crackable
agreed there tho - still looking for someone to confirm, eink kndles, you cannot hack to read ePub? (and fuck Calibre, .mobi and all the assorted BS that sailed in with as well).
Genuine Q. - got old LCD kindle, dont need another portable tablet device, just interested in an eInk ePub reader - gotta be Kobo, or that $400 POS?

So why don't I just buy a tablet to read on? is the only reason so i can read it directly under the sun and it's "better for your eyes"?

DRM is a meme

Just source your shit from decent trusted sites and you will be fine

(and NEVER use the "upload via email" bullshit, personally i also put it into permanent flight mode since i don't want amazon following what i read thru at the moment)

Why don't you just go to the library? All the books there are free.

Because the nearest library with programming books is in the capital city. And I have no intention of going to the library every time to read a god damn book or carrying that piece of trash with me at all times.

Yeah the great thing about an e-ink display is they only use power to update the display. Since books are pure static content an e-ink display only uses power when you flip pages pretty much. That also means that they can hold an image even with no power at all. If you completely run out of battery power they'll just hold the last image that was on the screen indefinitely.

1. The first two bulletpoints you use is not about anything but how to get files on the ereader.
Sd card, samba or special program isn't that interesting if it gets the job done.

2. Battery is irrelevant when its only used to turn pages, and it lasts a few thousand page turns.
Hand crank for recharging, battery backup, or some external something is really irrelevant.
I would recommend to see if you can find usb hand cranks attached to a small battery.

3. PDF support is a given. So if it can be scanned, it works.
PDF support for all the insane shit that exists for PDF? That isn't a given. But so long its not for corporate .html manuals it should be fine
(anything)
Personally i've been looking into the Kobo Aura One but the thing that bothers me about it is the price to go from the 8gb version to the 32 gb version. especially considering the price of the screens themselves are way cheaper these days. I am planning on adapting a driver and controller board to run the e-ink 7.8" display that the aura one device as well as the tolinos epos and the boyue t80s likebook plus use.

amazon.com/Charger-RAVPower-Waterproof-Foldable-Smartphones/dp/B06XBGSS2R/

Buy this solar panel and a good power bank. That will charge your kindle.

If you're going to fuck with PDF then get an iPad or some shit. They're not optimal on e-ink devices. Other than that it's a really good deal, they last very long and and can keep you company. The only problem is getting yourself to actually read.

Those larger e-readers are a niche product. The large screen is definitely worth it though since reading a large PDF on a tiny low refresh rate screen will suck ass. The battery life on a small Kindle will probably be trash too if all you read is PDFs.

kobo e readers are literally $30 on ebay
they support epub (open source ebook format) iirc and if you don't like it you can always return it or turn around and sell it to some boomer for $60

>`large screen.. niche product..
yeah, this damn nigger got me intrested now - started looking at 13.3's now - theres a few large screen einks floating about, Sony DPTs n shit, all fuck expensive tho.
WOULDN'T BE A NICHE PRODUCT WHEN YOU WOULDNT CHARGE A $1k FOR THE DAMN THINGS
= no justification there tho, none - well into Surface Pro prices, for dumbscreens that do (in comparison) nope, nada and shit.

Fuck it, as notes, get a $30 Kobo, see if eink is worth spending the other $400-$900 on, just to obtain a viewable screen size.

Anything like this WITHOUT the solar panel.
Thanks very much!

Got my mom a Kindle Oasis last Christmas, she really likes it. She's read more books in the past 8 months than she had in 10 years. Would highly recommend.
I have a Paperwhite that I use and it's not bad either, though the backlight is noticeably worse.

What is even the point of pirating books? Support your local library

Should I get a Boox for Tachiyomi support

This, just use calibre, there's a guide somewhere on how to convert .aw3(?) amazon files into .mobi etc. been using my LEDless kindle to pirate for years.

To remove ads on kindle you literally just delete all info in one file, it's that easy.

Daily reminder to use k2pdfopt to format your PDFs aesthetically

Attached: 20180812_205309.jpg (1836x1836, 1.09M)

for me, a redpill is a smartphone with moon+ reader with all the settings tweaked to my liking

Still not gonna bother. Shit works anyway.

has anyone read on the amazon fire 7" before? i remember i bought it to watch stuff while im in the bathroom but never bothered to read up which book format to use or anything

Boox run Android, so it seems a Boox with Moon Reader Pro is elder cherub tier.

Kindles are okay for pure text, or limited pictures.

Don't be a poorfag. It's an investment. For all of the PDF's or manga you'll probably pirate, it's pennies in in the long run. Plus you can have 48 GB of total storage, which is insane if you optimize your files correctly. Plus you can switch out microSD cards as much as you need. Storage is cheap.

They sort of are a niche product past 7+ inches, however they are very useful. Until you've experienced large e-readers, it's kind of moot to say they aren't worth it. The PDF experience is so much superior on 10 inch readers.

Calibre and airplane mode are your best friends

No point in looking for a jailbreak if purchasing a new one
Won't come out for another year or so

If you don't mind the glare and the shitty 1024x600 resolution, it's really fine. Just install Moon+ reader and extensions will never be an issue.

That's about it

they're fantastic don't fall for the freetard ereader shit, kindles are the standard
just convert epubs to mobi which takes 30 seconds and is 100% painless
if you're worried about the "botnet" just turn off wifi

I really wanted one of these for school but they're fucking expensive and erasing the writing on it is fucking trash. So I ended up buying a Surface Pro 3.

based and redpilled

How much do they go for used?

got mine for $240 with a keyboard

>using an ereader
Just buy the fucking books or put the pdfs on a tablet. If the light level is an issue, find some variant of f.lux. Ereaders are quite literally consumerist bullshit. The tech is better applied to low-power applications than for yuppies to house a library full of genre fiction and celebrity memoirs.

Meant the Boox sorry lole

Fantastic for books, they suck for manuals and study texts.
The only problem of e-readers is the inability of skipping pages in a non linear fashion.

best boox for just reading?

i just want something i can read books on, that would be it's only purpose

good luck finding one used

Is the max size of the mSD really locked down by the firmware as you seem to imply? Why the fuck would they do it? The port can take any existing size of mSD, it's not like you need some new standard/revision for 128 or 250 GB.

>put the pdfs on a tablet
Tablet is consumerist bullshit too, though.

This is pretty much the exact set up I use. I got the Kobo Aura One Limited Edition though. Probably will never use all of the 32 but I am already above 8gb.
