why does everybody think they need the newest laptop for lectures ? I got a masters degree in CS and I rarely took my laptop to lectures and just had pen and paper or the script printed out to put notes on. I only took my laptop for practical courses where you had to program stuff but even then it was often done on university computers anyway so why bother ? people who had their own fancy laptop (especially macbook pros) were usually the brainlets who did the worst anyway or spent forever trying to set up shit when they couldve just used the university computers and already have it ready to go...

Hello class and welcome to mobile robotics! A key component of this class is Robot Operating System or ROS and using ROS requires a computer with GNU/Linux installed. We highly recommend that you install GNU/linux on your personal computer, not inside a virtual machine, but on your actual computer. This will make doing your homeworks and projects on the turtlebots easier. We have found that it's very difficult to use ROS inside a virtual machine especially when attempting to communicate with the turtlebots. As stated in the syllabus we cannot help you with any issues regarding virtual machine setup. One dedicated GNU/Linux machine is available in the robot lab, but it tends to get rather busy the day before the assignment is due.
