netbsd shoulda used this

scr format sucks though

'Cause they were designed to solve a problem that affected CRTs. No CRTs=no screen savers.

/thread

you need animation

textured flag can be nice if you have a pleasant image

What was the problem?

Screensavers are dead because people became more energy conscious and use sleep mode.

If you leave a static image for too long it will be burned in permanently on the screen even if you turn it off, the "saver" part is about saving the screen.

I knew that static images burned into screens but I didn't know that on CRTs they burn even when off. That's interesting.

i think i have seen screensavers on quite recent macbook pros

That's a terrible screen saver, they're suppoesd to prevent burn in but all of that is static.

Serene Screen Aquarium was great shit, you could customise what fish to show up. Based lion fish.

I made mine myself, pleb.

the custom text one was the GOAT
especially in school, theres always one shithead that would change it to say something naughty when the teacher left the room

I liked the vista bubbles
on older windows, best one was the maze

that was my favorite too
yeee

maze on psychedelic settings

Pic related. A better friend than most

>even if you turn it off
What

Wait for OLED screens.

>A better friend than most
Just revisiting my own screensavers I came to a similar conclusion: My future and past self are the best friends I've ever had and probably ever will have.

After this enlightening moment all I still need to manage is my porn and gaming addiction.

Turning off the display means the crt would have to go through additional wear via heat cycles etc and 80s CRTs don't support power management at all

>After Dark
My nigga

I think that the only way for me to consider having a gf is being unable to access porn.

And maybe losing some hand to eye coordination.

I liked starfield
And that version with blue that looked like hyperspace (did that exist? I remember something like that)

I have a CRT that has the Windows 2000 login prompt burned into the glass. It's easily visible when it's turned off.

oldfags will remember this geisswerks.com/geiss/shots.html
is there an equivalent to this for loonix?

I use this one at work with 3 monitors. It certainly caught some looks.

Screen burn-in is still a thing though, takes longer than crts but still happens.

Do you live at the top of Mount everest?

I have two 17 inch and two 19 inch CRTs on my attic that I got gifted. Even used one 19 inch and a 17 inch for playing vidya for a while recently. Shit was good, especially since you can overclock them. Had the 19 inch at 120 hz

There was this wallpaper in xp

Why do you ask?

Suggestions for experiencing this in 2018?

That's the one.
I used to set that as my wall paper when I was on my account.
Was comfy.

because they're pointless and useless - by the time it starts you have already returned back to the pc

just turn you lcd off/on with xset s

in '96 or '97 this was saving our school class computer screen

There is nothing left worth saving.

Post it.

I have never seen screen burn-in before in my life. Wowzers.

Back then I think I got a pirated copy of it in a floppy disk borrowed from a friend... Those were the days

Pipes > maze.
Good point.

The gl ones on Linux were great.
Also, I had one software that allowed to create custom screensavers. With cyborg lady and helicopters. Good times.
That being said these days I would given how easy it is.

You must be 18 or older to post here.

Nah.

too bad you probably can't put these old screensavers on win 10. Using the bubbles one btw.

What would a Jow Forums screensaver be like?

nvm they still work. Thank god Microshit didn't deprecate that feature

man pipes and pipes 3d is just so genius if you think about. it actually makes you atleast keep your eyes on it until it finishes one cycle.

Right but you're not saying the image gets burned in even when the monitor is off.... You're saying you can still see the burn in when the monitor is off.

xscreensaver's galaxy was my favorite

Oh, I see your confusion. But I understood what they meant myself.
saying an image "will be burned in" implies that it happens at a time, and remains further, at least to me. So it paint a clear picture for me.
To rephrase what the other user said
>If you leave a static image on for too long, it will be burned in permanently on the screen, and remain there, even if you turn it off; the "saver" part is about saving the screen.
I believe there are some displays that have image retention that is only visible when powered on. But maybe that's more of a backlight issue. I don't know.

Linux Mint comes with an exceptionally great screensaver, I forgot its name though.

Is there any way to have the iconic win95/98/2000 screensavers on win10 ?
If there is a guide somewhere on how to import them that would be great.

CRTs work by rastering electron beam over a phosphor layer behind the glass, the more the beam interacts with the phosphor the more it burns it away leaving less reactive dark spots where the beam interacted the most, extreme burn in can be seen when the display is off as well since the phosphor layer is physically thinner in places and becomes translucent. Screensavers allow you to walk away from your screen without turning it off and have no burn in, but blanking the beam would have a similar effect

All the same stuff happens in old electron microscopes which is my field so I have a lot of experience with it

Fuck I meant to reply to

I use Screensavers on fedora. Love the classic GUI too

OLED is a bad joke
