Fucking digital vegan hipster.

I can't remember being forced to use anything proprietary in my CS degree. Stick to university and you should be fine.
Colleges will probably teach you retarded microsoft shit for the sweet microsoft money.

there's an actual difference between college and university in clapistan?

Depends on the professors tbqh. My programming one class grades were done by bash scripts that did unit checks and I wrote all my submissions in vim/compiled with openjdk. But the new teacher insists on using some shit IDE and projects are distributed in the proprietary project file type for shitbeans or whatever. Operating systems is normally taught with minix and gdb so all free, and I was able to use an open source mips compiler for computer organization.
Hear this though, that enlightened do things by the terminal professor was a black woman and the new faggot is a white dude with a jap wife who specialized in game dev. He got to teach the OS class and has stopped using Minix and instead has everyone work on some proprietary, unholy merge of android x86 and Ubuntu. Which continuously runs into terrible errors because it's untested and this guy is a brainlet. I wish there were worst slurs against straight white males because their vidya and app dev silicon valley nonsense is genuinely ruining academic CS. Fuck their memes I'd rather normal people who happen to like computers any day of the week. Gamers should never have been allowed to program their own computers

No, but in the UK/eu there usually is

Not in the US afaik but in Canada there's a huge difference.

Not in an official sense. Typically University means a bigger place, often with different "colleges" which have different departments in them. Theres not any official definition here that I've ever come across.

a CS course shouldn't require proprietary software to complete it
if it does, then you're going to a shithole

Don't take a Calculus class that forces you to pay for an online book or quiz. I had to pay an additional $70 and install fucking flash to use those.

I actually emailed Stallman recently about this. I basically said I wish there were a list similar to the RYF list, except for schools and possibly workplaces. He commented that it would take a huge amount of time and effort to make, and kind of left it at that. It was the second time I've emailed him, and both times were immensely disappointing.

Yes, but if they don't know people will care, they won't make it obvious that non-free software is needed. Imagine starting classes and then finding out you have to use non-free shit after you're already going there. It's a true nightmare scenario.

I emailed him once on a similar note but about pornography, I wanted to know if there was any porn sites with free and libre js out there so I asked him about it and what he used, he replied that he didn't watch porn online

>he didn't watch porn online

madman. but for a second I kinda forgot that porn used to exist before the internet.

English Lit or Art History or Philosophy to name a few...

He's 65, he probably isn't even interested in porn anymore

CS if the program isn't cucked pajeet shit

there's an entire program that stands for Open Standards, Open Software and Open Security and from what I recall we used absolutely 0 proprietary software for the whole year of study

Don't tempt me user

It really depends on the teachers. Regardless of the degree, you're out of luck if they want to use proprietary crap like Google Classroom or whatever trendy program/file format.

I'd argue it's easier in IT-related degrees because they're usually more open to free formats. From what's I've seen, biology people don't know any better than MS Office or Google Docs. I can only guess it's troublesome to do group assignments with them.

go to MIT

gender studies

Requires macbook

I'm sorry OP,

nearing the end of my undergad degree, and google drive is basically required for ANY collaboration, calendar requests, etc.

websites, and providers like blackboard and Piazza, where you just have to agree to the terms to even get a lot of your assignments...
It's hell. but, as best as you can, if you can manage yourself, you can get in contact with the cool kids who use arch linux in the CS dept. and start getting some of your shit straight when it comes to assignment submission and getting yourself organized.

but gmail being the backbone of many decent engineering university's accounts is a baseline to expect im sry user

sucks bro

Nothing wrong with being a vegan.
Fuck off.

My tech professors at my christian univeristy all suggest linux/GNU systems and software. I discovered vim because my christian CS prof. required we do our C in Vim.
Strangely it was a secular university that suggested Microjew.

What about the first time?

Only if you like sucking cocks.

not just nothing wrong, vegans are right.
don't listen to these adult men still drinking mommy's milk, and from a 1000 lb female with raging estrogen no less. gay baby-men drink milk.

If your College/University has Cisco for their network, the computer networking class will require you to use Internet Explorer for the Cisco lab work.
