Some of the best software jobs are with "progressive" start ups. Been a while since I have worked for companies like these. How bad is the political environment in places like these? I am fairly conservative as I assume most of Jow Forums is. Is it possible to escape and be able to do my own thing? Can I still hold strong bonds with coworkers, if I just keep my mouth shut about politics?

Most start ups don't discuss politics in any real manner. It's largely seen as unprofessional. That doesn't mean people won't make accomodations like giving Muslims a prayer room or LGBT people a gender-neutral bathroom - what keeps the employees happy generally keeps management happy and productivity strong. Just don't expect someone to shove it in your face over lunch. If you pop a vein at seeing a gender-neutral bathroom sign however, maybe you aren't cut out to really work in a professional capacity.

Most tech companies that actually build interesting things don't put a leash on you anyways. You have general deadlines on the work you do, and how you get there is up to you.
I don't get the issue americans have with gender neutral bathrooms. No company I've worked for or school I have gone to has had gendered bathrooms.

Today at work one of the women was saying how she went to the bathroom that's commonly seen as "dirty." Another one of the ladies was like "ew that's so gross." The men (including me) use whichever bathroom is closest and don't really give a shit.
I'd say that he's right that women would prefer it for "sanitary" reasons even if their bathrooms are more gross than men's. I can say from experience as a maintenence guy that the women's rooms were ALWAYS more dirty than the men's and rooms.
