As a student, is a Chromebook worth getting over a typical Windows laptop? I ask because my friend is selling a Samsung Chromebook Pro for quite cheap (£200ish) but not sure if it will provide the functionalities I would need in class. No Mac books since I'm on a tight budget. Any advice appreciated :]

chromebooks are quite good for schoolwork

Thank you for the reply. Any effects to being offline since it is chrome based I'd assume I'd lose access to some apps offline like Microsoft office?

Get one that has m2 slot so you can upgrade disk. Make sure the one you buy has seabios or it can be added. Install Linux or BSD. My Acer c740 works. Upgraded SSD to 128gb (some reports say that more than that doesn't work). You have to flash seabios though for this model. If you find c720 those work too but the case isn't as good.

Note that if you don't want Linux, you still can upgrade the SSD for ChromeOS. Also note that with c740 the touchpad doesn't work on openbsd because no driver. c740 has a tpm if that interests anyone.

What stood out was the M2 slot. Will be sure to get one that has it since the standard 16-32gb just doesn't appeal to me. Thanks for the reply too :) think I will check pricings and either get my friends one of my own.

Why do you need to upgrade the disk. If all you are doing is taking notes and going online, even the default 32gb or so is enough.

I brought a chromebook and I pretty much never use it. It can be useful if you plan to take notes in class and write papers on it, but if you need to write programs or do big projects it is useless. In other words it depends what you're going to school for and what you need to do.

Depends on the use case I suppose.

Install Gentoo

A chromebook is nice if the ONLY thing you want to do is schoolwork, but I'd personally look at refurb windows laptops instead.

You can get a refurb Thinkpad for $200, for example. It's probably going to be way more functional than your Chromebook.

Well he stated his usecase.

I'm taking an EE course which in my first year has only 1 module in programming C. Other then that most other work is notes and tutorials. I'm not sure if we'll need specific programs since the course syllabi does not entail any specifics of the sort.

Honesty dude just get a low-end laptop, or did what this guy saidGetting a chromebook sounds nice on paper, but in reality it's so impractical compared to laptops. It's basically a light weight note taker with wifi.

Mhm you're probably right, there most likely will be some windows only programs id have to use and in the long run a windows does sound better. My brother has a ThinkPad too just the trackpad is kind of shoddy, think I'll just get what's on discount and be happy with it haha

No it's consumer grade shit. Getting a refurbished Latitude, Elitebook or Thinkpad in that order gives way more bang for your buck. Install Gentoo then.

There's no low-end laptop that'll have a screen as nice as a Chromebook Pro's or a 3:2 aspect ratio, let alone low weight, battery life, and build quality.

Just get a chinkpad, it's far more computer for the money

No he didn't. "Class" is as specific as "work". literally any computer can be used for some from of work or school. It depends on what school work op is doing.

Chromebooks are under powered machines with good screens. Chromebooks won't last you two years at most (well, I guess it depends how you treat them). If you're going to spend 200+, I would recommend picking up a used BUSINESS laptop. Laptops that used to be 1000+ and then dropped over time are SO MUCH BETTER than laptops that are "new" and 200.

Business laptops were made for work, and have nice keyboards (well, I guess some of them)

I'm currently rocking a Dell Latitude E5420 and I can tell you that it's changed my life. The screen is shit, yes. The speakers are at the bottom of the laptop, yes. The fans kick in sometimes, yes. But it's keyboard is a dream, it's ruggedness is a dream, and with Linux it's a dream.

I used to own a Acer Chromebook 15, and... the charging port was demolished after my sister pull it away from my hands and threw me on the ground (true story). I'm still planing on repairing it, but I don't have the soldering tools available at the moment. Point being, Chromebooks are hard to repair.

If he's going to do EE a chromebook is going to be useless anyway. Might as well get a laptop and get some actual use out of it. I'm telling you OP, take it from someone who fell for the chromebook meme. I legit never use mine whatsoever, and I'm a CS major. I don't know what classes you need for EE but I'm assuming it's all math and technical shit.

Just install linux on it

No. You'll need MS Office and maybe some storage for personal needs. Better get a Windows laptop, something from Asus, Dell, Acer..

Also it's a laptop for college, why the fuck would he need a "nice screen", what ever the fuck that means

Why wouldn't you want a decent display?
If you don't know what makes a display good or bad, then I don't know what to tell you.

All valid points, my problem with ThinkPad (well atleast the one my bro has) is pretty heavy, really bad quality screen, battery isn't that nice and all around would annoy me to lug around. I'll just scower some second hand stores so I can get a look and inspect it myself.

Again, it's going to be for college. Why the fuck would you need a good display? Or you going to do schoolwork with it or watch porn all day?

I'm using a $100 chromebook for university. It's pretty good, just don't expect it to replace your desktop. I like it because it's not a big deal to replace if I drop it or it gets stolen.

Got a 256gb Transcend SSD (TS256GMTS400S) in my C740, working great

If I'm looking at something for several hours every single day, why wouldn't I want it to look nice?

And yes, I might play games or watch movies on it, I'm not buying a separate, shitty laptop for school.

Hmmmm thanks. I'll try it.

Hello class today we'll be using >>windows specific program #200414die of STD's because you became a homo homeless who sold his bunghole for booze.

c740 and several others can run Windows. Someone ported all the drivers from Linux.

Then you may as well get a desktop if you're going to use it for hours everyday. You get a laptop to do schoolwork not for fucking gaming and watching porn all day long.

Why not both?
Does your uni sell old parts for cheap? I built my own desktop with almost all used parts from uni except for the GPU (rx 480) total cost including 2 monitors, 4 core Xeon, MB, case, some hdds, new 3tb hdd, new 256gb SSD, 24gb ram, some misc, was about $600. I easily saved $1000. Been working great for a year now.

Lmao, yeah I'm getting a windows dw :p

It makes absolutely zero sense to get a laptop for gaming or watching movies or porn for hours everyday. This is exactly why even decent laptops are so fucking overpriced, too many idiots who think or expect their laptop can or should replace their desktop

I'm not sure. However I do already have a nice desktop, was just querying for a laptop but I've decided on just getting a cheap second hand/refurb windows one for class. Tbh I could also get a Chromebook, my uni is quite wealthy in department budget's and any program work will be done on their desktops for the most part. But for the sake of integrating across one spectrum, just a windows will do :]

Whoops been using that desktop for two years actually. Also I made it all back because I mined a little ethereum when it was $10, forgot about it and sold when it was at $1000. Computer paid for itself 3 times over.

Nicely done!

Samsung Chromebook Plus is better than Pro
Pro has botnet Intel processor
Plus (v1) has freedom Rockchip processor
Pro has obsolete 3.18 kernel
Plus has LTS 4.4 kernel and can run 4.17 mainline
Pro has "more powerful processor" which basically means it's same speed as Plus because thermals are shit on a laptop this thin and light

Whoever said get a CB with M2 hasn't shopped CBs lately
IDK of any with M2 or even SSD
It's all eMMC now
Maybe the Pixelbook
But that's pozzed Intel
