Somebody help me :c

I just purchased a used enterprise server while dual Xeon processors and 128GB ram.
While sitting at idle, my CPU is reaching insanely high usage leaving it completely unusable. Any idea what this could be? The fans are definitely working... could it be thermal paste issues?

I don’t want to have to return this thing but it’s acting fucked.

And can you check which process does that?

I would, but it was such a struggle just to open the activity monitor. Took me like 5 minutes. There’s a 10+ second delay between slight mouse movements

I’ll try though and report back

Go to tty1, stop Xorg and use top

you don't have video drivers.

Is this a meme? Or is this a real issue?

imagine, you don't have video drivers and your CPU is doing GPU's work
hm...
what could go wrong, right?

this isn't a meme, I had this issue with ubuntu.
just install video drivers
I think that xorg session uses less CPU so it might work better, at least lets you install drivers
if still same, on login press ctrl+alt+f1
log in
apt search
or

OP said it's a server, it doesn't have a GPU. It's probably not meant to run a desktop environment at all

What drivers do I need? It has integrated ATI graphics.

probably mesa

well... correct me if i'm wrong but in OP's image he's clearly connected server to monitor

Reformat, reinstall.

Why did you buy a server if you have absolutely no idea how to use a computer?

to learn user... you have to start somewhere

Start on the computer you already have.

VPS?

Have you tried running from a live usb to check whether or not the installation is fucked?

What are the processes that take up the CPU, do you need them and is it possible you shut them down?

This screenshot was taken from a usb of fedora 28. It’s even slower than the os I have installed

have you tried installing GPU drivers?

That’s what I’m thinking the problem is. Is has integrate HP graphics but there are drivers for it so that’s what I’m going to try

I’ve installed Debian in a VM so many times and have never had issues like that so I was confused

>just another day in the land of linux

>install desktop linux on server
no video drivers so everything runs on the cpu, slowing it down to a crawl
>install gui-less linux on server
everything just works because it's all text-based with no need for video drivers or even gpu
>install windows on server
get fired

It’s a HP proliant ml350 g6... are the onboard graphics really so bad that I can’t even run an Os with a GUI?

user, I don't think you'll be able to run heavy DEs like gnome and KDE. If I were you, I would try running a wm like i3 or open box. You could also buy a cheap graphics card like the gtx 1050 and use that. (Make sure your motherboard has a pcie slot before buying it)
Also, you'll want the xf86-video-r128 driver.

>VM
What the fuck you're waiting for?
Just try it and tell us if it's worked so I could tell you to fuck off to because Jow Forums is not your tech support.

Why not ignore the thread instead of projecting toxicity. I’m not at home, posting from mobile so I can’t try anything yet

Thx. I’ll try this. It has an extra pci e slot so hopefully if I put in a gpu there won’t be any compatibility issues. I’ve seen conflicting experiences with this elsewhere online

How much did you pay?

About $600

did OP ever manage to type pgrep / pkill ??

Install GenToo:
It's the fix to all issues except long compile times.

Will it fix my issue of no gf?

GenToo becomes you gf.

You wouldn't be having this problem if you had installed windows 10

Or if he installed GenToo.

Why would you install win10 on a server?

Incompetence

The server is powerful enough to run Windows 10 and still be useful.

Because I want to clean this place.

>gui on server

Based.
This is just another shitty thread made by another shitty faggot who is too self-important to use the generals or even a search engine.

Did you just reply to yourself?

Looks like some interrupts issue from bad driver?

To not get problems like OP has.

and gnome of all things

Whoah gottem

>BUYING XEON IN 2018
HAHAHAAHAAHAAHAAH dont you know threadripper's exists now?

this idiot posted a picture he took of a screen, do you really think he knows what that means?

you start with a raspberry pi, you dont start with 2 fucking xeons + 128gb of ram, fucktard

lmao

underrated fucking post, holy shit i love Jow Forums

thanks

possibly lagging too much to screenshot

Mine was free I don't give a fuck.
I also don't have OPs retarded problems even on botnet OS's with no gpus

Attached: Captur.png (409x291, 11K)

Maybe it's not just a GPU driver missing. The cheapest laptop with 15+ years would be able to run a Linux distro with a gnome DE rendering everything with the CPU. It would lag, yes, but not take 5 full minutes to open the system monitor. Maybe 1.
This is a fucking server with 24 cores and 128GB RAM. It MUST be able to render everything with the CPU and still have 23 whole cores available

>he fell for the 24 cores/128GB of RAM meme

OP here:

Update: I switched to Debian LXDE and it’s running much smoother. This screenshot was taken in a fedora usb boot. I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that the built in graphics aren’t powerful enough to have non-laggy GUI functionality, so I’ll probably just end up ordering a cheap GTX card and slapping it in. Hopefully that will fix my issues

>built in graphics aren’t powerful enough to have non-laggy GUI functionality
well duh, it is a goddamn fucking server, not a desktop, get the netinst debian and install it gui-less

Okay user, sorry we all aren’t experts like you

This is my first server, and I know it’s probably overkill but I got a good deal on it and it’s not that serious

Reduce the size of your swap partition while you're at it.

install something xfce based, without systemd. try Devuan if you get the chance.
If you want to learn and keep control, gentoo or LFS.

Avoid redhat and canonical, it's just cancer

install windows 10 on it

Why though? You can't learn high power computing or running multiple vm clients with gui on it.

And as another user said, it can't be just the gui. Rendering a low resolution 2d desktop don't take about any resources. His not trying to run Crysis cpu rendered you know.

Install Gentoo, faget.

You are a complete fucking idiot.
