I've never posted here before, so bear with me. I just got a brand new computer and wanna try linux. I've checked some alternatives and are currently downloading Ubuntu, is this a good start or can you recommend me something else? I cant code or command at all.

You must start with Gentoo.

Ubuntu is a fairly nice start, just remember you may have to install proprietary drivers--people tend to forget that and expect it to work the same as Windows with the correct drivers.

Ubuntu is a good start but make sure to download Kubuntu. The normal version uses a desktop called Gnome. Gnome is pure garbage that will turn you away from Linux. Kubuntu offers a friendly and good looking KDE desktop that you'll have no issues navigating if you've ever used Windows. You might stay with Ubuntu forever, or one day you may graduate to more advanced systems like Void Linux or a BSD. For now, just stick with Kubuntu. You boot to the desktop and open the installer program which is incredibly easy to use. You just click next several times, click on where you are on a world map to set the time zone, and then add user names and passwords.

I presume this is a tech meme. Is it good for beginners however?

>proprietary driver
for every program and software?

Thanks, i will try downloading Kubunty and try a little.

"Proprietary Driver" as in the drivers for your graphics card, wireless card, or other hardware. Also is just meme-ing you. It's common here.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Proprietary drivers could be needed for certain wireless cards or maybe your GPU. The installer will offer you a tick box to install this software automatically. If something like WiFi still doesn't work after the install, just Google it, ask the Ubuntu community, or ask our stupid questions thread or the friendly GNU/Linux thread.

Usually you won't encounter driver problems. Every laptop I've ever owned has had the drivers work out of the box starting around 2010. In the current year the support is even better.

Mint or Antergos.

Ah, okay that's not too bad, but there it seems like i need some time to finetune the system of course, i will look at it as an hobby on the side or something like that.

Informative and good to know.

Mint is great desu start with that

Install Solus

Ubuntu is fine. Don't listen to anyone else unless they're suggesting Mint.

Ubuntu is a good start, I started with it too when I was 12 and it worked without troubles, there is also Linux Mint, if you don't like the way Gnome works, Mint/Mate is a more Windows style DE, so you may want to check it out.

My brother recently bought a laptop, he isn't good a computers (He keep downloading virus in windows), but even he knows how to use Ubuntu, I installed him Manjaro + Cinnamon, so far he's liking it, and I can check his laptop on the weekends and do the 'complicated' stuff for him.

TL;DR Ubuntu, or Linux Mint. Use MATE or Cinnamon if you don't like GNOME.

You don't need to know 'code' or 'command', just learn the basic on your terminal, (Terminal Shortcuts, Aliases, Browsing historical, etc) and the basic stuff (Update your system, your repos, remove a package, edit .configs, etc).

MX works better desu.

That just shows that Ubuntu a shit. Pretty sure that openSUSE, Arch,... would get similar results. Solus is pretty nice tho.

Best reply to this Spaghetti.

Ubuntu is fine. You're probably not going to notice much of a difference from Windows or any other desktop OS nowadays. They all have file explorer, web browsers, etc. Not until you start exploring the command line and digging into your OS internals, installing new software, editing config, etc. That you'll start seeing a difference. Still, Ubuntu is a fine place to start. Don't expect anything crazy, it's a very beginner friendly OS (though very much full fledged Linux).

When it comes to normie distros, I personally prefer Ubuntu MATE.

HOLD ON BOIS WE GOT A LIVE ONE

Just install Ubuntu. Its the most supported. I personally dislike Kubuntu and heavily prefer Ubuntu over it. The guy recommending Kubuntu is just biased by his own opinions.

Gentoo is a minimalist distro that you compile(build) from the command line(terminal)
If you want to try something extreme and learn about linux then i'd suggest it. Otherwise it's a meme

Ubuntu Mate

Archlabs, arch without the hassle. Now I use arch only but its a good beginmer distro

Try GuixSD/NixOS/Gentoo Hardened/Sel4/GenodeOS/Plan9 other distros are shit.

guys. I installed mint.(I need cinnamon or gnome2 )
And the fucking mouse stop working seconds after I use it. no matter if is already in the desktop for and some minutes. and it wont work even if I reconnect it again.

I tried a lot of mouses and nothing.
even my logitec g600 shut of it's leds/laser like if it was dead.

any solution?

what the fuck!. fresh install.

I had a (kind of ) similar problem the first time I installed Linux, my keyboard and mouse weren't being picked up at all. The solution for me was to go with a different .iso, clearly the one I used was fucked somehow, but maybe that doesn't have to be the case for you.

Are you already in a desktop when this happens? Which one? Press ctrl+alt+F2, this will bring up a terminal and take you out of the desktop. Type 'lsusb' when the mouse isn't working and see if it turns up. If it's not, try a different port or a different mouse. If it is, try a different desktop environment. Oh, and of course google the specifics of your problem.

Use Manjaro. It's Arch but easier to install. Don't fall for the Debian based Jew, unless you want your software to be out of date.

Start with mint or Ubuntu.

You can try kubuntu.

I would recommend devuan so you don't have to deal with systemd.

Why is ubuntu a starter and not the one and only? I started with debian when i was a kid but right now if i need to install linux on a new laptop, it will be ubuntu, why bother with other distro?

For example, what does archlinux offers vs ubuntu?
More compatibility? features?
It is only about ram usage?

thanks. lsusb listed the ports so I could figure that the problem
was having any mouse on a usb3.0 port. I hope that was the problem.

most of the ports of my MSI mobo are 3.0

Oh fuck off already

Ubuntu. Start with Ubuntu get curious hop around find what you like de wise then come back to Ubuntu.

Gentoo, Arch if you want variations of the traditional Linux experience of absolutely nothing working until you manually configure it after being forced to read and comprehend the manual.

Most other distros will basically "just work".

no you don't lol. the people here are pedophiles with child porn stashes. that's why they use linux. for their 'privacy'

unless that sounds like you, stick to windows like any rational, sane person would do

Get linux mint, its a great beginner distro with great DE called cinnamon. If you were windows user, you will easily get along linux mint.

Ubuntu is fine. Be sure to specify 18.04 for your google help searches, I've been burned by instructions actually being for 16.04 and irrelevant
