End of the Linux desktop

HOLY FUCK NO
With manchildren and stupid kids starting to use Ubuntu because Steam with Proton will make games run faster than in Windows, the Linux community will be completely trashed.
>Tutorials to install stuff from synaptic will start popping up
>Stuff for wms will go completely under
>Development of Gnome will tremendously increase because it comes with Ubuntu and all the manchildren will like it because it looks flat
>Stupid fucks asking dumb questions
>Shell will be thrown out and voluntary
>Man-pages and info will be removed, html docs will remain
>Directory structure will be simplified
>New standards will be developed
This looks really grim for all the people that actually know how to use their system.
These changes will be adopted by the easy distros pushing us to stuff like Void and shit. Steam isn't even compiled with musl. Compatibility will decrease killing the unix philosophy

what a fucking hipster

in reality, literally nothing will happen

lmao by what mechanism will those things go away, and why will more, new tutorials be bad? Gatekeeping faggot, fuck off to some stagnant BSD

Because Windows need tutorials to install and uninstall software. This means that the desktop will need to be simplified majorly.
This already happened with Gnome 3 and systemd

Nothing will really change. Newfriends will just use ubuntu and install via deb, synaptic or copy pasting repository downloads in terminal. Overall nothing changes. It just means the userbase grows a little bit.

Gnome 3 and systemd are shit products because of their creators. Not because a potential incompetent userbase that may or may not exist.

What do you think will happen to KDE, i3, dwm, ratpoison and whatever else there is out there for wms and DEs when there are more users in total on Linux, some who will move beyond Ubuntu? This can literally only help. If there's more potential money in the ecosystem you could also get more players than Red Hat, and maybe finally offer some good competition. Chill, dufus.

>all this whining
And this is why picrelated will not change anytime soon

I do exactly those three things. how do you install new software?

Shouldn't minix be on top of that graph?

>valve
>steam
>PROTON
what a stupid name to ruin you in house trademark
could have named it wrench or something, at least it starts with w like wine

can confirm, both seem extremely arrogant

>move to linux
>don't move to linux

I can smell you from here

OH NO LINUX IS GETTING BETTER SOMEBODY STOP THESE MADMEN

Unknown is pretty comfy, I'm using 6.94 right now.

He writes out the package to feel like he's a big boy

>M-MUH SEKRIT CLUB, SUBREDDIT IS BEING INVADED REEEEEEEEEE
kill yourself.

>oh no I will not be part of the cool secret computer club anymore
>people won't give me attention for using this obscure and complicated piece of software please help

Most likely a bait thread. You got me there

>Jow Forums on an average day: WAAAH WHY NO ONE USES LINUX? IT'S BETTER THAN WINDOWS CAN DO EVERYTHING AND ETC ETC
>Jow Forums after noticing that thanks to SteamOS people could start using linux more: WAAAH WHY NOW PEOPLE WANT TO USE LINUX? GO AWAY FROM MY SAFESPACE

ayyyyyyyyy fellow amdfriend
you think desktop still matters? Linux has won.

SHIT, FELLAS SCRAM LOOKS LIKE THE THING WE'VE BEEN ASKING FOR YEARS IS FINALLY HAPPENING, GOD HELP US.

The Ubuntu community is already retarded (just look at the official forums). I doubt it's going to get particular worse because of Steam.

>Linux desktop userbase might increase
"I felt a great disturbance in the NEET userbase, as if millions of voices suddenly REED out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something awesome has happened."

Attached: linuxflag.jpg (1000x850, 86K)

Nah i do those things as well. I only compile if i absolutely have to.

this is the only correct answer. even if valve succeeds in making linux gaming viable, they can't fix the overarching usability issues of the OS. people expect to use their computers for other stuff besides gaming

Imagine being such a degenerate that your shitty distro becoming more usable for non-turbospergs is cause for panic. Don't worry, no one is going to touch useless distros like Arch any time soon.
What few Steam users will jump from Win to Linux will go on Ubuntu, simply because that's basically what Valve means when they say Linux support.
That's supposing they don't go back to Windows immediately because even native Source games barely run on Linux, let alone unwieldy AAA trash trying to run through Wine.

Attached: Profile-WymanManderly.png (400x510, 391K)

I can't imagine any possible reason why I give a fuck how many other people use my preferred OS. kys normie

>native Source games barely run on Linux
Utter horseshit. Opinion discarded

I bet you're really fun at parties

>even native Source games barely run on Linux
Surefire sign you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

I think OP is worried that with a normie-ish crowd coming into Ubuntu then Linux will be next to be MAC-ified after Windows or something.

Yes. I used plan9 once and the community was incredibly redpilled. Inferno was a breeze to use but you had to use their docs.
Lots of normies will shift the development.

Good thing there are several different linux distributions and that it's not some oligopoly as that old MAC VS Windows dichotomy, right?

Wait, it's actually going to be FASTER in Linux?

Holy shit the absolute state of Micro$oft

Redditors glow in the dark too. I can see the neon from here

OP is right though. Look what a shitfest android is despite being "Linux".

Being somewhat hard to use and keeping the idiots on the other side of the gate is actually one of the things that makes linux good.

We're still posting on Jow Forums on the year 2018.

I would like to see things improving, like more manpower and/or money being poured into development of some the more popular DEs and maybe drivers, especially getting good open source Nvidia drivers (like that's gonna happen with Ngreedia). But I agree with the OP in that we will probably see things "improving" instead. That is, people will want it to be closer to their distorted vision of what an OS is - Windows. The posts you see in this thread and the various anti-linux ones support this. People claiming you need to be an autist, virgin, neckbeard and whatnot to find Linux usable in its current state might mostly be trolls, but sure enough you will find people adopting this and similar mindsets as Linux's adoption grows. "Why isn't there one distro?" "Why isn't there one DE?" they'll cry, not being able to make a decision themselves; a decision they might later regret when another distro or DE becomes cool and hip. But hey, why adapt or learn something new, when you don't even need to meet it halfway?

Just wait until the trannies and feminists jump on board in earnest.

FOSS is entirely supported by volunteer programmers, so if you want something done, stop whining and start contributing, monkey.
Dumbass.

Disregard OP, this is the true horror.

more users (and retards) = more money = more developers creating nice things for linux
that being said, the OP is also right.
not everything can be good things I guess...

The beauty with linux is that it is open source.
Don't like ubuntu/normie shit? switch to arch/void.
We will reap the benefits of being a popular os while normies will get a watered down version of ubunut. Simple as that.

stop complaining and take advantage of it. start your own monetised tutorials youtube channel.

Imagine searching for how to do something and some tutorial for normies pops up.
Yeah, and what would you say if trojans started showing up in oneliners in tutorials and they would notice it and mark linux as unsafe, killing it forever

bring up dropdown terminal with one button shortcut. type in alias for package managers install, add program name, press enter?

take advantage of it. You will have intimate knowledge of linux while the world will be switching over. If that is not an idea for a youtube channel/business i dont know what is

>sudo apt install x
literally hackerman

Plz bump

Cant wait for Googles Material-DE

Linux should be command line only.
Linux on server, macOS on client. Perfect.

>Jow Forums tells me to switch to linux for years
>OMG DON'T SWITCH TO LINUX

Hmm....

Unless you come all the way from unix, you can fuck right off

This and a bunch of other stuff always pop up in my head every time I read something cringy like "year of the linux desktop". People really should be careful what they wish for.

>ChromeOS has more than half the market share of Linux

Attached: 1519128128168.jpg (206x200, 4K)

The community already started being trash since last year.
Retarded manchildren will start using wms n shit after a few months because it looks more "I'm a hacker bro".
Just take a look at plebbit's unixporn, most posts are pure tumors.
We'll see, though I still prefer having kiddos, niggers and whoever the fuck is a fucktard on the windows side. (yes im gatekeeping)

Interesting that all the normies are on the top begging for spoonfuls of cum delivered right to them, while intelligent people are on the bottom

as others said, NO.
This can literally only help, more people donating to free software projects and thus increasing the number of devs and with this development spees. Fucking hipster. Ubuntu has always been there, this won't affect distros like arch or debian, maybe mint. But that's it. Kys
