VPN

I'm considering paying for a vpn service, but I'm not the most knowledgeable person about them. Any suggestions on what the best company is as far as speed/privacy goes?

I'm wondering this as well, I've heard services like Nord throttle you after the first couple weeks, don't know if it's true tho.

I hear tor is slower than a decent vpn. Is it not worth the investment?

depends what you mean by privacy

Do you mean they don't give a fuck about your weird fetish porn and illegal movie and TV downloads? Pretty much any VPN meets this standard.

If you mean sharing CP, looking for hitmen, or thinking of joining a terrorist group. Then you'll need to be a lot more selective, and even then you'll probably fuck it up somewhere and leave breadcrumbs back to you.

Mullvad.

Honestly, Im mostly interested in torrenting and getting at least a tiny bit of privacy back. Not doing anything crazy.

Then any major VPN provider is fine.

PIA (Private internet access) gives me ~400-500mbps throughput, with peaks a bit higher.

vpn just makes you not the lowest hanging fruit it doesn't turn you into the hacker called anonymous

Its not. Ive been using them for over a year now
>in before shill

worst advice ever, you'll get blocked from half the sites you visit

I always recommend VPN's based outside of the 14 eyes countries

If it's for torrents, no one gives a fuck.

I've been using PIA for 5 years and I torrent ~1.5TB of content a month on average.

For speed purposes, if it's just for torrents, that's retarded. You have no real advantage and you suffer immensely in speed.

I torrent through Nord sometimes at work, I get 70-80mbps on a 200mbps connection. It's not full speed, but it's more than enough.

This site is pretty comprehensive:

If you absolutely need to be soonfed or cannot into computers at all, there's a more simple, albeit less informative version:

Offloading the VPN to the router, or are you doing it on the PC itself?

If it's on the PC end you could just be being held back by the CPU.

I never thought about it like that, it is indeed on my shitty work laptop.

Yeah, especially depending on the level of encryption you're using. Higher end crypto obviously requires more horsepower.

This is why high end routers that can offload the VPN processing are expensive, they end up being fairly powerful CPU-wise (or ASICs) to do this.

Why though?
If you live in a 14 eyes country the only thing you're doing is limiting your potential throughput.

Ignore the shils and setup your own vpn on a cheap vps from digitalocean or vultr or whatever cheap hosting company you like/trust, the cheapest droplet is more than enough for vpn server and you can set it all up in less than 5min.

I've tried all the Jow Forums shilled vpn providers and all of them are shit, don't fall for that meme.

Digital ocean keeps logs and fully enforces DMCA takedowns and will close your account with repeated violations, so i wouldn't exactly recommend that.
