Thinkpad. Look at the /tpg/ OP. It has a list of laptops. One of those will probably suit your needs. If you're willing to cheap out a little you can get one without a hard drive, RAM or some other defect that will get you a very good laptop under $500. It just depends on what size you want, if you want/need an optical drive.
