Sitting in CS class

Fucking hell I thought CS students being autistic was just a meme. Help me bros.

First day, huh kid?
Lemme give you the best advice I can give you.

Double major in mathematics.
Drop the whole "Ew icky math, I'm no good at that stuff XD" that 99% of people have.
You don't have to be that smart to get a degree in math, only above-average, and on top of that, employers will REVERE you.

You will likely end up with a job doing something no pajeet could ever replace you for, and you will get paid way more because of it.

Math is fucking nothing, but Math and CS are literally the holy grail of employment.

>thinking cs students being autistic is a meme
excuse me how the fuck did you ever approach this conclusion

A lot of people pick up CS because they like video games or they think it's an easy path to making 6 figures but they don't have an idea what to do with it. This is why you get a lot of people that graduate with a degree and don't find any work.

user, if you're still around, give me some advice.
Planning to go to uni in about eight months, I'm pretty good at English but pretty bad at maths, like I have some problems with times tables still and I'm 19. Not good.

I was going to do Business Information Technology, but should I study maths for the next eight months (brilliant.org, ect) and go for it?
Can you give me some examples of the things I would have to have a solid foundation on before I go, and what I would need to learn there?

>First day of CS330: Unix System Administration.
>Prof says first task is to install a GNU/Linux distro.
>Unwashed neckbeard blurts out "Install Gentoo."
>Entire room silent as unwashed neckbeard cackles.
>Prof says we're installing Ubuntu.
Which one of you was this? Kid ended up bailing out of the class halfway through the semester.

>fortnite streamer gets a kill
>yell "haha totally got him!"
>teacher looks at you
>"oh sorry, that guy is just watching video games on his laptop"

I dunno what would happen next.

>pretty bad at maths, like I have some problems with times tables still and I'm 19. Not good.
yeah you're not going to make it

>implying that wasn't you

Push my fingers into my eyes...

Not OP but I've been thinking about double majoring in CS and Math for awhile now, but it's more because both majors are fairly similar course wise. I don't see how double majoring would help you job wise unless you wanted to branch out of CS altogether at some point

>problems with times tables
>beyond the third grade
How?

Attached: togawa on the rails.png (960x720, 662K)

How much math do you know now? By time tables what exactly are you talking about, as in multiplication? Did you take your placement test yet? The absolute lowest math required for CS is calculus and possibly physics. If you go to a tech institute, the amount of math will be near or exceed 1/3 of the entire major, not including pre-reqs. In other words you need to git gud if you're serious about doing CS otherwise do something else.

Also this, how the fuck did you graduate high school without knowing multiplication? Are you black or autistic?

Give me a chance here, I've been working for two years since I graduated and I'm getting good at studying. Deleted Facebook, Reddit, Discord, YouTube and Snapchat a month ago, and I have a lot of free time now.

>zoomers are so addicted to faceberg that they can't perform basic mental math
Imagine my shock

I'm Australian, so the ranking system works a bit different here. I don't have an ATAR, but I do have a WACE. I'm going to do a bridging course, which I've already been accepted in to.

Don't worry, I'm white and not autistic. It just took me much longer to realise that my problems were my my own fault. I was very lazy in high school and caused a lot of problems for myself. Working for the last couple of years has been a really good chance to reflect.

Didn't have a problem with Facebook or Snapchat or anything else, got addicted to discord and Reddit for two years of high school. Trying to claw my way out of this mess I've caused.

>Math and CS are literally the holy grail of employment.

Add accounting and you become loo destroyer of pajeets

>I was going to do Business Information Technology,
BUT
>times tables still and I'm 19

You should ironically kys

This guy knows
I'm doing software engineering/comp sci with a minor in math and I'm having a decently hard time staying in school due to employers recruiting quite aggressively.
Although that's more or less the same for everyone in IT in my country.

I think you're missing the bigger point here. How, in the ever living FUCK, do you get to this point in life without knowing multiplication of all things? That's stuff they teach you in like 4th grade.

This. Most end up dropping out. Here in Germany CS has one of the highest dropout rates.

This
Basically, when kids are failing through hard courses you should be focusing on them and learning that stuff.
Stats double major with CS should be good too.

Why stats?

In Canada, graduating class is about a quarter of the starting class.

Statistics is something you come across a lot in software development. Here's an example from my current job: roll out new feature to subset of customers. Before rolling it out to all the customers, we sample the usage rate and speed of them using the application to do X. Then come up with a confidence interval to show that the usage rate had changed significantly.

shit is it that bad?

I met a math major working at home Depot in the paint department

>Here in Germany CS has one of the highest dropout rates
got me, double major math and CS, dropped it like it's hot. it was too hard for me to buckle down and learn on top of being behind the class after 2 weeks

No I meant why stats and not math as a double major? Wouldn't math be more board?

Yeah. Professors here are pretty good. It's because plebs aren't ready to spend long hours programming and practicing math.

Varies by university

>wants to Cs Grad
>cannot into 3x3
>nigga wut
ITS OK LADS, I'M OSTRALIAN!

It always amazes me how many people can justify dropping out of classes. I had a class once that went from 20 people day 1 to about 6, wasting thousands of dollars on nothing.

nice try wagecuck

Pretty sure a lot of unis refund it if it's before a deadline. I've done that and switched classes because I realized the prof was shit

I know exactly what you mean. The worst is when you want/need a certain class and all the spots get taken, KNOWING at least half of those people are going to end up dropping out. My first two years that shit drove me crazy and my schedule was all out of whack because of it

They do, but this specific classic lost a lot of people after the deadline. I'm sure lots of them even got it marked as a failure on their transcripts.
I'm glad this shit hasn't happened to me, you were right to be pissed.

>get into MIT
>super stoked since it's my first choice and here I believe will be legit hacker neckbeards like I aspire to be
>walk into each of my classrooms first semester
>a sea of macs
>brown cheating incompetent curries and chinks everywhere
>the most legit clubs are also full of macfags
>even the linux user group is 75% macfags
3 years in and I'm still usually one of maybe three or four non-mac users in a given class and I'm literally the only one I know on campus with a dumb phone.

I'm like you user but theres hope, make these your friends for the next what 4 years?
openstax.org
Khan academy.org

You met an idiot

Those kids will be gone by the time your Advanced Data Structures class roles around. My program retained about 30% if the starting class. If your school is any good the wheat will separate from the chaff.

Attached: butter.jpg (392x253, 91K)

Don't worry user, I graduated high school with one of the best GPAs in my class and I'm currently studying computer science in one of the best universities in my country and I still don't know the multiplication tables. You just need to git gud at multiplying and dividing by 2. For example, 7 * 6 = 7 * 10 / 2 + 7. Sounds autistic as shit, but if it works then it works

Anyone here take Data Structures? Is it as hard as people make it out to be and any general tips?

I'm surprised MIT doesn't force you to use Linux. My program was like 90% nix and I went to a State school.

Im looking into switching my major from English to Info Tech business major. Seems like all my classes past my 2nd year are all Networking and business classes. How much math and coding does an Info Tech business courseload usually do?

I'm fine with Math, especially the classes I would be required to take but I've never coded a day in my life. I'm fine with software and hardware

MIT is a state school.

>double major in mathematics
t. unemployable outside academia or education

Attached: 1535392553696s.jpg (112x125, 3K)

Also go devote the next hour to learning multiplication table, my teacher in 6th grade made me write the whole thing like 30x
>9x9=81 x30
>6x7=42 x30
and you get the idea its retard proof and should work also trying repeating them vocally dont just write

Data structures starts off confusing. It's one of those things that doesn't click immediately. A lot of the material didn't make sense until after I finished the class.

Ok bros I need advice. I am wanting to go back to college (community for now)

I am 28, barely have made any progress college wise. It will be about 4-5 years to get a bachelors if I work towards it.

If I graduate with a bachelors in Computer Science can I still find a job or is the field flooded, and won't have any chance of getting a job?

Don't worry dude it gets better once you reach industry

Sorry about the lack of women tho

>Carleton
Me too man! Graduated 2015

People start dropping left and right a couple months in dude. CS programs usually have a 50% or higher drop rate.

t. 300k starting

Fucking this
>graduated last year with mathematics degree
>had my choice of any job I wanted
>earn $300k starting
mfw

Attached: img.jpg (640x427, 34K)

What if I've taken math up to Calc 1 and I didn't like any of it but I've always gotten A's or B's, except Calc where I got a C, but also literally only 3 kids in my entire class of 30+ got an A or B because the teacher was shit?
I can't say I remember any of the formulas for advanced shit, but I guess I would pick it up when doing it again. Is that normal behavior and memory retention?

Because the school system is so fucked people end up in places they really shouldn't be in. It's all a scam.

Wtf do you do with a pure mathematics degree

>first day of Uni
>walk into CS class (discrete math)
>professor goes over syllabus for 15 minutes then proceeds to the first lecture
>later that day walk into Human Diversity course (required by the university)
>professor forces everyone to do an "ice breaker" activity
>spend the whole 75 minutes going around to each student introducing yourself and giving a fun fact about you
>mfw I hear a Chad telling Stacy after class that this class is so fun because they didnt have to do any work

Attached: 1515667810785.png (436x425, 84K)

Literally this
> first day in CS
> introduce yourself to the class
> everyone generic "I like movies and games on free time"
> me: I like to program, build things with arduino, etc
Like is everyone in CS now just in it for the money and don't actually enjoy computers?

Is it worth getting like $20-30k in debt to finish my computer science/computer security bachelors? Already have an AA but only took GenEds to get them out of the way (transferring from community college).

I enjoy computers but I'm horrible at self-studying without being directed. I enjoy what I know though.

100% agree, tax-funded higher education for all is a fucking awful idea when 65% of people really shouldn't be spending 4+ years at a college.

specialise in stockbroking algorithms, pretend you be Feeding The Machine all day. Shit got so complex so long ago, everyone lost the overview, and no-one knows how anything works. Best leave everything alone, collect your $500-750k and go home.

>muh gaymen
Yeah that's pretty much the opiate of the masses even at higher institutions. Obviously the higher you go the more likely you are to get true programming hobbyists who love the craft, but yeah it is very rare now. Basically 99 in 100 students at a great school is there to try and get a fintech or miltech career and doesn't give a single shit about becoming good at their chosen profession. Unsurprisingly the number of White and Jewish students who typically valued professionalism are rapidly shrinking to make way for soulless pajeets and chinks who cheat and back-bite their way into a mediocre career.

>White and Jewish students who typically valued professionalism
stop falling for Jow Forums memes, there were plenty of white kids in my CS program who didn't give half a shit about that, they just wanted the easiest thing they could do that got them an office job with no heavy lifting and a decent paycheck.

>being a lazy teenager is autism

I don't understand what the fucking point is behind doing stuff like this, in a classroom setting, like I give a shit where someone is from or what they like doing in their spare time. It seems elementary as fuck to me.

Memorizing times tables is a meme
there's a reason why its a table

50 people in a classroom there're always 5 or so guys using Linux (including me).
Interesting enough I noticed that girls tend to use Linux when they don't have money to burn on a Mac.

Attached: 1515869630021.jpg (700x989, 90K)

Don't worry, they'll get filtered out by their first Data Structures and Algorithms course and change to an IT major.

Attached: theenemy.png (1920x1080, 1.97M)

Big agree with you. I was a good kid in primary school, didn't cause any problems and was very polite, so in hindsight, the teachers would give me a lot of wiggle room.

At least I'm trying right? Happy to admit I'm maths brainlet but I don't want to be this way forever.

Good advice, I've been making an effort already with basic multiplication. Algebra and trig make a lot more sense to me and I can "get" them.

>the number of White and Jewish students who typically valued professionalism are rapidly shrinking

That's why I liked CS at BYU. All whiteys. I'm not an active Mormon but the emphasis of knowledge and education is still there

Not hard, but not easy either. Just do the work and you'll be fine.

They're trying to promote a positive atmosphere and start conversation amongst students with common interests
It never fucking works though

It's a fucking horrible idea. Yeah lets make college "free" so that Jamal can study Afro-History and Stacy can study Dance Theory, because we don't have thousands of grads struggling to find decent paying jobs as it is. Cut college in half and get rid of all the meme programs(aka 80% of the bullshit liberal arts schools have) and then MAYBE, we can have a serious discussion about tax funded college.

>mfw kid said in my class today he messes around with arduino

Where do you go to school?

>Also, I program in my free time and also watch movies and play games, it's not like it's impossible to manage. Except during the semester when my course work ramps up of course.

Attached: 1472923867608.png (500x437, 261K)

>Professor asks everyone to stand and say an interesting fact about themselves when it's their turn
>reaches me and I couldn't come up with a single interesting fact about myself

Attached: 1470184742282.jpg (258x195, 5K)

I had to take a final exam because I shitted on the first test. Got only 35%.
In the second test I got 89% and at the final exam 96% iirc.
It's hard because you need to write complex algorithms on paper so you need to be extra careful.
The top 3 hardest classes IMO are by far:
>Computer Architecture
>Data Structures
>Computer Graphics

>first semester at cs
>professor decide to skip loop structures
>teach's functions-pointers-recurssion instead
>first test
>everyone is fucked, only 5 people out of 38 made it
>gay men and brainlets automatically reproved, half of the class just vanished after the second test
>second semester only 7 peeps got though and are learning data-structure
>mfw only GNUfags are getting a degree

Attached: index.jpg (232x218, 6K)

>>professor decide to skip loop structures
>>teach's functions-pointers-recurssion instead
What the fuck? It would make sense if he was teaching a Functional language, but you mentioned pointers so I assume it was C.

What about compilers? I'll most likely need to write one next semester

Haven't done it yet, next semester too. Only rated the ones I had experience on.

Are you me?
>have a crush on this girl on my CS course
>she's really shy and doesn't talk to anyone
>I tell my friends I enjoy making hackintosh machines when I'm not using GNU/Linux on my laptop
>she suddenly starts talking to me (not about operating systems tho)
>she often prefers to use the computers at our lab that have ubuntu installed

I never talked to a single girl here so no. They're not ugly but I dislike speaking with women in general; I won't start talking to one just because she likes Free Software for example. Unless she's a tomboy.

It was C. He did it because almost everyone was getting into the second semester literally only knowing to loop

>Unless she's a tomboy
Based

But was it necessary? At my uni we learn Haskell in the 3rd semester so everyone eventually needs to learn recursion whether they like it or not.

There's definitely no reason to talk to a girl when she's older than 12 and NOT a tomboy. If you do, most likely you'll only hear (((vacuum woman words))).

test

test

today at i was at uni washing my hands in the bathroom when some cs major wearing a fedora asked me how my urination was. he then proceeded to tell me his was good because it was not red or yellow...

We don't' learn Haskell past the basics here, our 3rd semester is basically optimizing algorithms to use in slow languages

I'm a transfer student and junior and I don't know anyone even after two semesters.

I wish someone would talk to me.

FUCKING MATH

It's used everywhere you dumb nigger

test

test

Hey fuck off man, I decided to not even do it and give up

>Algorithms professors has us implement sorting algorithms over and over
>tells me this is possibly the most foundational thing you will learn in CS
>our second test covers nothing but sorting algorithms
>go into the industry
>literally no one implements their own sorting function, they all use the one sorting function that comes in all standard libraries
Fuck you, Dr. Hisham

he was trolling you
