They also can't identify the American flag and think foreign aid is actually stuff their leader negotiated for them from the UN because he's such a good negotiator. North Korea was developing nuclear weapons because it wants to be recognized as a nuclear power. Now that they've developed the technology it gives them much more negotiating power and it makes their leader look more legitimate in the eyes of the public. The official story on the North Korean side is more or less:
