Another reason why Linux sucks balls.

idk, but it doesn't look like a .rar extracting program to me.

sudo pacman -S unrar

yay rar

sudo apt install unrar

I'm pretty sure Ark comes with KDE preinstalled. In gnome-core on debian i also got something similar with it. I just learned that gnome's file manager can also extract things by itself.

By the way, if you're on windows, i recommend 7zip over winRAR. It'll do everything you need without popups asking you to pay up.

Bait

Peazip is easily compatible with .rar compressed files because it's prepared for a common format

OP here, I downloaded the Linux version of "RAR 5.60" from the WinRAR website, but when I extracted it, I get these weird files. Where the fuck is the install program? All I get is this, a bunch of junk. Again, this is why nobody uses Linux.

This is why year of Linux desktop will never be a thing.

Have you ever even seen a terminal before?

It's people like you that are going to make me ditch windows.

why aren't you using the distro's built in archiving tool
what distro do you have

Why does Microsoft pay shills to shame something that's already not popular?

>needing to use CLI to perform basic operations
linux everyone

CLI has always been faster than GUI

CLI is only good if you're trying to hack into a mainframe or encrypt your loli porn.

Elementary os. I only use apple.

I propose a challenge: Install a program that can extract .rar files.

sudo pacman -S file-roller unrar
or
sudo apt-get install file-roller unrar
open in file roller and extract

OP here, I'm using Windows 10 while running Arch Linux in a VM because everyone here recommends that distro.

Attached: tJ2JEVb.jpg (576x764, 84K)

>using arch
>pacman doesnt work
>complaining about CLI while using arch

triple retard

Holy shit Windowsfags trying to install something on a GNU/Linux using Windows methods are really hilarious. Almost nobody distributes programs through installers on Linux - everything is done automatically through package managers you niggers. Now, at least tell us which distro you have because Linux is not an OS.

Attached: Desktop Rice.jpg (1920x1200, 617K)

you guys didn't want me to use Ubuntu cause apparently that distro's for retards, so I went with something that can make me learn more about Linux, only to discover that it's an unusable piece of shit.

How about a challange where you all tell me what other purpose in 2018 does a .rar file archive serves other than a 3rd worlder trying to open the shitty_videogame_crack_2018_stillworks_trustme_no_virus.rar he downloaded to run his pirated videogame?

>complains about CLI
>somehow got through the install process
i dont believe you are using arch

How much of a degenerate are you?

I just copy and pasted commands from the arch wiki and got it in a somewhat bootable state.

lmao

Look, if you want a simple distro then go ahead and install Ubuntu. Don't listen to them, if you're not listening to all of the Gentoo recommendations here then why won't you ignore Arch? Starting with Arch is practically impossible. I don't say that it's a bad OS, I use it myself as my main OS, but the truth is that I, as well as many others, have started out with a simple distro like Ubuntu to get to know all of the basics of using a Linux distro. You know, getting familiar with the concept of package managers and other stuff.

Also, Pacman doesn't work because you probably haven't even installed Arch, and just booted straight off the ISO. If you're a newbie then just stop and install Ubuntu. After you've used Ubuntu for a bit, then you can switch to Arch if you feel the need to do so.

>le installer crashes
Nothin personnel kid

>being such a brainlet you crash antergoes installer

7zip does this

dude the antergros installer is a complete pile of shit, it's just a straight copy of the ubuntu installer yet they forgot to compile it properly so it has all the canonical remnants in it and it's laggy as shit

A JEW IS BAITING YOU, SAGE THIS NOW

its never failed to work for me

Why would a person deliberately crash the installer you idiot

>deliberately
no im saying he was so much of an idiot he crashed it

You're one lucky bastard then m8

>WinRAR
You mean 7zip.

Demonstrate to me how a person would crash the fuckin installer.

I work with rar files al the time. No Windows here, I just use Gentoo and CentOS.

All I did was install KDE and the default archive manager opens rar files without any problems.

Tesla is literally open sourcing their shit. Maybe use a different example?

I told you, all I see is a bunch of gobbledygook with no install.exe, see

Yeah but you clearly are a retard so you should probably use it.

of course getting packages from anywhere outside the package manager is a fucking nightmare for a newcomer, we all know this

which is why you stick to the fucking repos for packages and don't rush off to google to get your applications, this is the most important thing that new linux users MUST learn

(part 2)
it seems like i'll have to post this for every anti-linux thread that comes up, since people will just keep asking the retarded question of "HOW DO I INSTALL TAR.GZ PLS HELP PLS HELP"

Linux is for people who don't value their time.

>Linux is for people who don't value their time.
Shitposting on Jow Forums is for people who don't value their time. Shut the fuck up you hypocrite. Regardless, I spend far less time on OS maintenance now that I use Linux than I did when I used Windows. The only OS that I cannot make that claim about is OS X, but that's only because there is no way to fix most of OS X' stupid bullshit so I didn't waste time trying.

>spend less time on OS maintenance
How's fixing X for the 4th time this week going?

>Windows: See a forum thread with the answer that has a download link, install it and run, problem solved.
What? How do you solve problems on windows by installing programs? Can you give me an example of this?

>Linux: find forum threads that have a bunch of condescending know-it-alls that post stuff like "sudo apt install X", without telling you where to put the command
There is only ONE terminal in which you type commands. Are you referring to the fact that ubuntu ships with 2 terminal emulators, the one being the normal terminal emulator and the other being UXTerm? Well I'll let you know that if you launch both of them, you get the same exact shell. They are terminal EMULATORS, the only bring up an interface with which to access the terminal.

And I didn't tell you to not google for troubleshooting, I told you to not google when you want to get packages. What you should do instead is visit packages.ubuntu.com/ and search there **first**

sudo apt install p7zip p7zip-rar
7z x

I've never had X break in my life. Find a new meme. What you are referring to was only a problem with a small number of distros which stupidly overwrote the xorg.conf file with every update. Not even Arch Linux is guilty of that these days.

>windows
>download and install 7zip
>open rar with 7zip file manager
>drag and drop or extract

Lol retard

came here to post that in response to OP "Stupid noob, sudo apt-get phofrantic (or some other unknown obscure package)"
>but i get an error
"did you install the dependencies and compile it for the kernel first? god, it's not hard..."

just let it rot like systemd, it's that easy!

top level bait.

>use a normie distro
>download rar file
>it opens normally and you can just extract it

Retards, I swear.
Having the system natively understand things like RAR, PDF, and torrent files was one of the things I actually liked about Linux. Imagine a system being functional without having to install random .exes from the internet

here i'll play your little game for you, i'll use winrar on linux

i navigate into the extracted download and find the file called "unrar"

then I do a hex dump to prove for you that it is an ELF and hence it is a valid executable for linux
learn that linux executables don't have a bit fat extension at the end, they keep their names short (because, like commands in the terminal, you type them out all the time and you don't want to type the extension as well, it saves time)

then i execute the unrar utility and voila, it works as intended, it gives me a list of all the options i can pass to it to get the result i want

Attached: Screenshot_5.png (1283x819, 78K)

but nooooooo you had to get winrar, thunar isn't good for you, file-roller isn't good for you, you have to get the windows application no matter what

ffs linux has different applications than windows, and THAT ISN'T A BAD THING

That's because Winzip is a quality product worthy of selling, which is why it needs a timed trial and a terms of service.

different =/= on the same level / better

what does winrar have that file-roller does not?

but
>on the same level / better -> different
that's why it isn't a bad thing moron

>Spend less time on OS maintenance in Linux
>as opposed to no time at all on Windows because it always just werks

That's an interesting perspective. I boot into Windows perhaps once every 3 months to play Distance in VR. What I have found is that approximately 50% of the time that I do this, I run into some kind of headache that costs me time. One thing that is particularly frustrating, is that I constantly have to reinstall the driver for my official xbox 360 wireless controller adapter. In addition to that, the forced updates that can only be disabled for 30 days at a time often put things into a non-working state. I can't pinpoint anything they are doing that causes it, but when that is the only that changes and suddenly I can't use my VR headset, it's pretty fucking obvious that's what the problem is. Then I have to spend a bunch of time updating literally everything to the latest version, reboot, and test again. This usually fixes it. However, it's completely nonsensical that I should have to go through this experience just for 30 minutes of gaming. Not once have I ever had this shit happen on Linux. The only time my OS updates is when I tell it to. The only time it needs to reboot is when I install a new kernel. Nothing stops working unless I explicitly do something (with the exception of occasional Valve fuckups with all their forced update bullshit in Steam)

Convenient way to transfer many files over the internet, seeing as almost no transfer methods allow you to send folders with their files and subfolder structure.

it's called tar

sour grapes...

What's the difference?

This is the reality of Linux..

did you bother to read the thread at all?

tar archives files only without compressing them, while rar archives and compresses

if you pass the .tar file through gzip, you get out .tar.gz which is both an archive and it is compressed with the gzip algorithm, aka zip

also, tar is an open format while rar while firstly developed by winrar, essentially making it their propietary format and forcing people to use their tools (until open source ones were developed, at which point people realized that there was no need to bother and they stuck with zip)

>double click rar file
>extract
that was hard
