Nowadays you can just download more ram, then you had to buy it in floppy disks and install manually

Man this was a life saver. Also it was epic for browsing a websites files kind of like explorer does.

It would fill your ram with empty files forcing windows to clear actual used mem. Worked well.

What the hell happened to Real? I tried RealProducer HD, gave it a nice x264 video, set the same bitrate, and even though RealHD is supposed to be close to HEVC, the converted video looks far worse than the original with aftefacts up the ass. Do chinese streaming sites really use this?

before Microsoft licensed ScanDisk from Central Point, Norton DiskDoctor was a godsend. And so were undelete and unformat.
you have no idea what it's like to live in an era without data recovery utilities. now you just get them for free.

you can't. it wasn't a particularly intelligent engine

altavista is probably the first that was anything like google in terms of indexing and search ability. to make the best of altavista, you had to know how to search (boolean etc) which normies wouldn't know how to do.
these days you have autocomplete and automatically pruned results. kills the fun of wading through search results for what you're looking for.

it's sad digital got sold to compaq, then to hp. rip makers of the alpha and altavista.

I'm maybe thinking of System Works tbf, and Scandisk etc. - that there was the odd semi-useful prog included, no argument.. but afik (or remember..), some of the 'added value' Utilites apps over the years were sketchy in the extreme. after Microsoft had scandisk in the windows 9x series, then chkdsk in NT, there was no reason to pay for norton utilities anymore.
especially on NT. at the time no one had reverse engineered NTFS to do undelete or data recovery yet, and the only integrity checking is through chkdsk (and still is)

early norton utilities from the DOS era had undelete, unformat, disk editor, disk doctor. those were very useful in a day and age without data rescue utilities.
that was later bundled into systemworks which had a crapload of other utilities for windows 9x (crashguard, registry cleaning, ghost, etc). some were starting to become unstable about 2003 and later.

I meant by getting them for free, not from Norton, but there's freeware utilities to do the same things, or it's built-in the OS

norton's only remaining business is security. not that anyone does that very well these days.
