Linux for PlayStation 2

What was the point of pic related? What did Sony try to achieve at releasing a Linux distro for a video game console? What was the point of it?

Using basic pc tasks, like writing and surfing i guess

Another pic for proof, I guess.

Making a cluster with all the PS2s you can get from garage sales

It was literally tax evasion. Game consoles were taxed higher in Europe than computers. So they released this with no support to claim they were selling a computer and not a game console.

Linux is an autism simulator

Avoid EU taxes

>Europe taxes
Did it work, at least?

avoidance != evasion

what keyboard & mouse do you use? looks cool.

so its easier to botnet ps2s.

>not recognizing Apple hardware
gtfo zoomer

>EULA

Those are the keyboard and mouse from the first iMac.

>window maker
noice

I would love this for the ps4 DESU

Possibly in some places but not everywhere, I'm pretty sure. Only essential stuff like food has the lowered tax rate here.

lol it has nothing do with VAT. If its true its about paying less customs to get them to the EU market.

programming.

tax evasion in UK. That's why yabasic was also shipped with every ps2 at launch. Not making this shit up, look it up.

>Possibly in some places but not everywhere, I'm pretty sure.
The whole point of the Common Market is that it applies everywhere in the EU (and some other territories too).

you can run linux with a jailbroken ps4.

>First iMac
>laughinggirls.jpg

ninja you dumb

Yeah but you have to use an older kernel and the radeon driver, not the newer AMDGPU driver. Which is still fine but it obviously isn't ideal. Also since AMD is involved, they will never allow upstreaming of support for the PS4 if they can help it.

Yeah sure get mad at some kid who was born after you. I'm sure he picked his age and his own knowledge base. Fuck off.

Last time I checked, we still could change rules concerning VAT. Common market would apply if it was about customs, as the other user says.. I thought that's not considered a "tax" which confused me.

i still have a ps2, might be worth looking into it

weren't fat PS2s loud as fuck

no

Remember when the ps3 could let you install yellowdog linux?

>yellowdog linux
That distro is old as fuck, Red Ribbon Linux is the best one.

Macfags are the most insufferable type of fag.

that's the fat ps3

>emulates PS2 and PS1 better than any modern PC

AFAIK the official reason given by Sony was that you could use the network adapter that came with it to turn your PS2 into a home server. Given the time, I guess it would've made sense.

>installing Linux on a PS2 for the sake of running PS2 games in an emulator

> no monitor with sync on green to do this with
How depressing

Great. Linux still sucks for gaming.

With CFW you can install linux again, with full access to the gpu too.

sure geohotz

Controlling missiles

Why did they do this?

Holy shit, I had no idea someone else had this feel.
Trying to use it over composite video was some kind of hell.

too poor for mac
do they still sell it?

cheaper

>be me
>a kid in a school, not the richest family
>take up a summer job to buy myself a PC
>realize that Moore's law is unforgiving and in full swing, and If I'll waste my money on a PC I wouldn't be able to play new games in a year or two
>realize that consoles don't have that problem
>PS2 is coming out soon
>decide to get a PS2
>it's great for games
>Now it's xmas time
>I want to learn how to program
>Ask parents for a PC
>user, a PC is too expensive, and you should've bought it with your summer money if you wanted it
>realize that PS2 IS a computer
>spend the next week in a library to find any info on how to install Windows on a PS2
>find out about Linux PS2 kit
>tell my parents about it, it's much cheaper than a PC
>we order it online from a shady store with 2 HTML pages from a library
>it arrives
>It's amazing - you can program, it comes with a compiler, you can modify the source of everything and I learn a lot about Linux, even get to connect to the internet
>Now I am a good programmer and have extensive knowledge of Linux

Thanks, PS2

oh god o fuck i dont have money but because of Jow Forums im buying a fucking ps2 from ebay

IIRC PS2s and PS3s were legit great options to make clusters like this

super computer with cheap consoles

Not even close buddy. Fat ps2 and ps3 were always quiet af.

Stories like this make me happy

Attached: 1526490660412.png (666x720, 610K)

Clusters were cheaper on hardware being sold at a loss.

That's comfy as fuck

its GNU/Linux for ps2

Attached: gnucar1.jpg (640x480, 139K)

I went on to do the same thing with a PS3 later. And it was super-comfy.

back in the early '00s edutainment stuff was hot. Also this was Sony's way to experiment wth the smart tv concept, which is why the ps3 also had linux.

WRONG. They've made that to dodge the tax in Japan, since Japan has different tax rate for PCs and gaming equipment.

Hankering for our banquets?

This is awesome user.

The penguin looks like he's smiling to hide the real sadness inside.

im proud of you

To doge taxes in yorup

How is it tax evasion? The reason you tax something is to discourage it. So they taxed game consoles higher to discourage game consoles, as a result you're now able to use your PS2 as a desktop rather than a pure console. This is an example of taxes working.

What's the point of Linux on anything that's not a server?

Linux is a Kernel. It powers Android.

>tfw have a stack of PS2s but never got around to clustering them
It's been on my list for years

Fat PS3 sounds like a fucking jet

Same as on servers, to provide an interface to interact with hardware

"So Saddam could make a super computer"
Anyone else remember this?

PS3 only sounds like a jet if it's full of dust and if you open it up once a millennia to change up the thermal paste and clean it it becomes silent.

Yes

Yes yes stallman, thank you, now let's try answering the question in the spirit it was asked.

There really isn't one for most people. It's a fun toy for geeks to try to boot linux on literally everything. PS2 was pretty cheap hardware for clustering though, so a few people actually used them in compute clusters for doing real work.

there was a time(around 5th/6th gen) where it was thought that consoles could replace pc as an all in one computer machine because how easy to install and cheap they were.Microsoft even got into the console market because they fear windows would lose market share. It doesn't surprise me that this exists at all.

Not a native english speaker but I meant that they added yabasic to pass the game console as a learning computer to avoid paying fees or something in the uk

That would've voided the warranty

The best PC for Linux gaming.

That's just false. I clean and change the thermal paste on my 80GB PS3 every 3 months and it is still noisy as hell.

Why not? Linux was and still is the replacement for Unix, and it's not like much else will run well on a 300MHz MIPS CPU and 32MB RAM.

>sales tax is the only tax

underage the post

It's a year at best where I live, just about time when you need to do the first dusting

what language? C?

initially, but I do Java now, it pays better.

holy crap where do I get one of these

Attached: glasses_pepe.jpg (641x530, 25K)

It has improved a lot though.

>muh gayems
Gay faggot go back to /v/.

Everything pictured can be found on ebay. You can install Gentoo and compile KDE1 yourself.

Nope it didn't.

ISO?

Good for you user :^)

what distro?

The development PS2s used a very similar distro
No, they tried shipping some sort of basic for that. The trick didn't work.
The linux kit was released later.

>the reason you tax something is to discourage it
Like an income?
