HOW THE FUCK DO I PICK WHAT TO MAJOR IN?!?!

HOW THE FUCK DO I PICK WHAT TO MAJOR IN?!?!

I'm heading into my sophomore year of college as a IT major (re-branded to computing security technology) and it feels retarded, I'm ahead of the entire class and it feels like I'm just gonna end up working a shitty IT job or something. I like learning about servers and stuff though and think it's important. I'm wondering if I should just switch to CS and concentrate in computer security or switch to Software Engineering since I enjoy programming the most. I really don't know what to do here, I also suck at math. Like I"m really really bad at it and I don't want to lose my scholarship with IT I was able to maintain a 3.6 without ever studying or doing anything.

How do you settle on a major?

>I was able to maintain a 3.6 without ever studying or doing anything.
not gonna make it

>it feels like I'm just gonna end up working a shitty IT job or something
That's because it's true. IT is the brainlet major of STEM.

Math brought my GPA down significantly.

Just finish your uni/college
CS or Software Engineering wont be that better

Also suck it up and learn the math, it's really not that difficult. You may have to put the fucking video games and porn away and actually study, but it's doable

>IT major
Holy shit that can't be real
Switch to a Math or Statistics major while you still can OP

This.
Whatever you learn in college will probably be totally different from what you do in the field.
Just get your paper and move on.

I've tried but I legit can't focus on it, I'm starting to wonder if I just have ADD or something. I've struggled with it since elementary school, it's been the absolute fucking bane of my existence. I had a 4.0 in HS without pre-calc, when they made me take it my GPA plummeted down to a 3.4. It's hard to admit but I'm a pretty disciplined person, it's just really hard for me, I don't know where to even start with getting better at it.

I mean I landed a solid paid internship with it doing risk management for a good company. I'm not really afraid of sticking with it, it's just a matter of not learning what I want to learn and having a joke of a degree.

That's what I was thinking but I also feel like I'm missing out a little bit. This makes the most sense though. I'm just insecure over the name of my degree to be honest.

Well if you're not willing to learn the math then you've answered your own question. Not sure about SE major, but it seems like webdev bullshit from what I've seen. But any degree worth it's salt will require some level of math higher than college algebra.

definitely not going to make it

Just stick with IT
You can learn the rest by yourself really and CS or Software Engineer wont make you learn THAT much more

CS and IT are nowhere near the same major, this is bad advice

Not what I said
What I meant is that it isn't worth the change imho
t. currently majoring CS

How do you figure that? If he were a junior or senior than I'd agree, but it's still early enough for him to switch without falling far behind

>I'm just insecure over the name of my degree to be honest.
I used to be like that too. It really doesn't fucking matter what your degree says, it's more what you're able to produce and how fast you can learn things.
t.hadoop engineer with an english degree

Acquire a passion faggot

Take it easy OP. No matter that you choose you will end up being a wage slave anyway. All year you will be tied up to one location (2 vacations/year for 1-2 weeks), waking up at 8am and hating everything and everyone. So stop thinking and choosing anything, every job sucks anyway.

so stop thinking and choose anything remotely interesting to you*

If you like programming. Go for a CS degree with security focus. If you're decent at it especially. If you aren't good at programming or math, go for IT, get your security plus and learn how to pentest or join your school's CCDC Team.

I find programming really interesting but I was not very good at it. Or math, after failing classes twice each before passing I ended up accumulating too many hours. I switched to cyber security minor and psych major, and I couldn't be happier. I have a job lined up at a SOC, I'm our red team captain and psych is very interesting.

IT jobs are all about practical experience. Degrees ain't shit unless you wanna become management.

If you are good at programming and math or believe you can stay on track, if you go into information security or something similar, they will teach you. CS is a more advanced program. There are more CS/Engineering majors who learn security/IT than IT/Security majors who learn Engineering or Comp Sci

>risk management

Also I just posted but listen here. You sound like me. Do not continue in a program if you keep failing at it. You will waste your time and money. And maybe drop out.

If you think you have ADD, SEE A DOCTOR. People will tell you, that you are just lazy. Ignore that. I was in your exact predicament. I was on Adderall then now Vyvanse and I feel like a normal human being with a normal attention span now. Not perfect but I can finally hold a thought for more than 1 minute. No it's not 'pretty much meth' it's also not addictive. Work on study habits once you get started taking it. Realize if you take it, and play games, you will focus on games not work. It's not a miracle pill.

I'd suggest doing IT and building up your resume to the field you want to be in.

Kys, it only gets harder.

How much doe it cost for an adderall subscription? I took adderall when I was 13 or 14 and it helped me a lot. But I stopped taking it because there was a big stigma about taking pills.

Ok judging by what others have said and my own opinions I'm gonna do that.

I might see a doctor soon, I'm still debating joining the military after college so if I decide against that I will definitely get some help. If not though I don't want that on my medical records.

I am already hired at a good job before i graduate with a cs degree and i got a 2.1 friend.

Except that's a real major. IT is what you major in when you want to play vidya and watch porn everyday

MIS - can blame those cs and ee types for your failures and have it look like its not your fault.

Attached: 1482336698842.jpg (792x907, 161K)

Just like I thought, it's literally the business degree of STEM

Kek. That's what I'm taking. Easy road to being the boss of a bunch of IT and Engineer plebs.

What is it with fags being scared to do math? I can't take anyone who wants to do computer science seriously if they refuse to go through the mathematics. It shows serious laziness or lack of intelligence, but most likely the former.

>my gpa and/or major are gonna be my foot in the door
ononononon

>falling for the college meme

I've actually just realized that the math courses required for CS are actually pretty easy

How easy/hard it is shouldn't matter, and it's going to vary from person to person anyway. What pisses me off is when people say shit to me like "wow you're studying cs? you must be really smart if you can do all that math hehe." I get so fucking triggered by shit like that, as if there's no work involved in learning it.

>NEET who's only professional interests are electric non-car vehicles and additive manufacturing
>don't want to go to college and get generic engineer degree
>riding my whole existence on my personal site of cool shit i made and some cheap certifications
will this work, blease help

>ultimately, employers don’t give a fuck what you majored in. All they care is that you have a bachelors, though even that achievement is likely irrelevant to the job.

I agree people who always go with "im so bad at this i can't do it" never go far in life.

I also slept through most of math classes in high school but then got my shit together and started to practice the basics online and honestly it's not rocket science, what's the most difficult math course in college anyways? differential calculus? multivariable calculus? real analysis?

any person should be able to learn this

What do I do if nothing interests me? I'd have dropped out of college if this weren't my last year. I really just hate technology after college to be honest .
I wish I had a creative bone in my body .

>How much doe it cost for an adderall subscription

Nothing or copay if your insurance pays for it. If you're paying out of pocket it still costs almost nothing with coupons:
goodrx.com/adderall?drug-name=adderall

My experience being a slacker: college degrees only help you differentiate yourself between high school dropouts. It can be much more effective to grind out a bunch of certificate-based qualifications. A college degree proves you aren't a retard, a qualification proves you can do something.

Attached: INDIA5.jpg (2700x1796, 970K)

Would it be difficult to get both a degree and certificates? I need all the help I can get.

you don't lack a creative bone you just need a few antidepressant pills

Depends on what you're trying to do. I got an entry level job ($15/h) that needed one certification which took 1-2 months to get.

If you're trying to find a decent job in IT forget about it. The dream's dead unless you're a genius.

It's like I said before, if you put away the video games and porn and actually STUDY, you can learn that shit. It's really not that hard. The funny part is that the same people who say they suck at math are the same ones that smoke weed and party and do all kinds of shit that wastes time and money. Then they complain because the only job they can get is at Walmart

What was the cert? CCNA?

I started off doing Zoology (entomology) and ended up doing Biomolecular and Chemical Engineering. Then I went back and finished Zoology.
Now at work I research spider venom peptides and fool around with nanotech a fair bit.
The ride never ends.

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)

I like IT but I'm too ADHD to do an IT job so I ended up somewhere hands on.

Attached: 1456786461322.jpg (1920x1080, 646K)

Haha ok. As if I'm depressed . As if I'll taint my mind with that. You're glowing.

But you'll "taint" your mind with adderall, which is potentially even worse

And I don't work for companies that are so shallow they reject my resume based on whether or not I have a prohibitively expensive piece of paper.

>Wanting educated employees is shallow
0/10 bait

Attached: 1535725641743.jpg (550x422, 35K)

Dog dragged by a carriage.

Adderall's harmless. If anything antidepressants are worse because they tamper with the serotonin system which is very fragile. There are several medical conditions alone related to the cessation of SSRIs, but the most common one I can think of is sexual dysfunction.

"but, in humans with ADHD, pharmaceutical amphetamines appear to improve brain development and nerve growth.[52][53][54] Reviews of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggest that long-term treatment with amphetamine decreases abnormalities in brain structure and function found in subjects with ADHD, and improves function in several parts of the brain, such as the right caudate nucleus of the basal ganglia."

Ah here it is:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antidepressant_discontinuation_syndrome

You really think this faggot has ADHD? Give me a break. He sounds like the typical 19 year old boomer that wants to coast through college and get an easy paycheck afterwards

He had an Adderall prescription when he was young, give him a break. I wasn't treated until adulthood which meant I kinda grew up with a handicap. If he can prove he had a prescription he should be able to get back on it easily.

>tfw on antidepressants right now and all it did was made my dick feel more tender, shoot ropes, and made me last longer.

Attached: 1533500053510.png (332x332, 148K)

>works on my machine

>antidepressant fag hasn't heard about jerking off on Adderall

Attached: 1494501593414.png (551x600, 204K)

Thread's dead I guess.

What I'm trying to say is that there's shitloads of jobs a person could do. If you can't find one you just need someone, somewhere to steer you in the right direction. Mine pays absolute dogshit but it's a high demand entry level job that's interesting on a good day.

I'm not on adderall

enjoy op. also go to payscale if you want more accurate breakdown by top 200

Attached: pay.png (845x731, 92K)

Where does info tech fall on this chart?

Like I said go to payscale to see the top 200 because that graph is simplified

He already said he's going to stick with his major. I'm not even sure why he made this thread in the first place. He should just suck it up and do CS but whatever, it's his time and money he's wasting.

Bachelors degree != educated unless keg stands and date rape are in the job description.

We're talking about computer science and EE, not communications degrees

still, US (((colleges))) are not education institutions.

>He should just suck it up and do CS
No it doesn't make sense to that after reading this thread and thinking it over.

1. I'm not "lazy" I have a serious issue with math that I can contribute to a lot of things, probably going to get checked for ADD. This can put my scholarship at risk which will actually make college a waste.

2. The difference in curriculum isn't enough to make me switch over.

3. I already got a great paid internship so it doesn't seem to have problems job-wise.

4. I can learn the shit I want to on my own.

After this I can't see a good reason to switch. It will put me behind academically and doesn't seem to massively change the jobs I will be offered out of college. It's best that I just see it through, all things considered. Unless you have some new information I can't see a logical reason to switch over and risk losing scholarships and/or struggling for 4 more years. I also have to factor in that if I'm disabled at math now I will be forever competing against people that are naturally good at it. If I'm killing it compared to other people in my current major then that might be better.

*attribute

Jesus fuck maybe I am just retarded.

Pick a few majors you'd love to do or will excel well in. Take classes that give you a taste of the major AND do outside projects pertaining to those majors.

Don't expect college to give you an answer. You have to explore subjects for yourself. Put in the effort to find yourself.

Whatever you say dude, the fact you think people are "naturally good" at math says it all right there. Just don't come crying on Jow Forums if you can't get anything better than 40k a year when you graduate.

>I've tried but I legit can't focus on it, I'm starting to wonder if I just have ADD or something.

I have been diagnosed with ADD, but I can't afford the medication. One of my coworkers started selling me Vyvanse and it's helped a lot. It's actually cheaper to get it from him than from a pharmacy without insurance.
It's college so I'm sure there are plenty of people you can find to hook you up.

I graduated with a BS in IT. Started masters in CIS but then dropped halfway because I was tired of college. Got a great job pretty much doing exactly what I like: programming, automation, etc.

Do what you like more, just be proactive to keep ahead. If you're not up to do the math required for CS don't bother, I learned the hard way. Do SWE if that's what you enjoy more. Staying proactive, programming, learning and experimenting on my own made me valuable and is what got me my job now. I would implore you do the same.

>Vyvanse

Did your psychiatrist shill you this patent troll formulation? I heard it's a pretty good drug but Dexedrine and Adderall generics are cheap as fuck out of pocket. GoodRX that shit or speak to an independent pharmacy for pricing.

$25 for a month supply of Adderall surely beats buying Vyvanse illegally.

...

this

I used to take Adderall when i was growing up, but the insurance I have now doesn't cover medication. The pharmacy I went to wanted close to $200.
The guy I buy from gives me a months worth of Vyvanse for $60, because it's free under his insurance.

>I'm ahead of the entire class
>I enjoy programming the most
> I also suck at math

You seem like a prime example of the peak of dunning-kruger effect.

it’s simple if you don’t learn the math prepare for your shitty future being a high school IT guy

>I’m ahead of the entire class
>I suck at math
the arrogance of brainlets

No I recognize I'm retarded, I'm just less retarded than the others in the major.

And yet people like OP think they deserve the same job titles and salaries as actual programmers

Alright fuck you guys I will switch my fucking major. Goodnight.

Attached: download.jpg (205x246, 9K)

Goodnight

If you aren't good at it, it's not worth it. These days I see so many people doing CS just for the money and they can't hold a job because their performance is shit

If you want to do IT then stick with it. People are shitting on you because you're using the "I suck at math" meme. If you want the big bucks you gotta learn math, it's really that simple. I can't think of any degree that pays well that doesn't require Calculus or Stats at the very least.

>I was able to maintain a 3.6 without ever studying or doing anything.
You're starting your sophomore year, pretty much nobody should have below a 3.5 at that point regardless of ability. You've probably only taken super basic intro classes so far.

>I also suck at math
This isn't your problem, you suck at studying, which hurts you because math requires good study habits. You need to pick up some study habits immediately or you'll sink in your 3rd and 4th year. Find a study group and use them to force yourself to improve.

If you think you have some variety of ADD, then go to a psych and get medicated or develop other ways to cope, you aren't the only one facing these issues.

Trust me I know how retarded I am, I went to prep school with a ton of fucking geniuses and I'm not one of them. However, I'm definitely selling myself short.

Yeah my personal nightmare is being an IT guy, idk why I did this to myself. I just really lack confidence in myself when it comes to math.

I definitely need to check on the ADD thing, it's not a cope but yeah if not I will change my ways.

What math courses have you taken so far? If I were you I'd check the catalog and see how much math you need to take. Most schools want Cal 2, Physics 2 and Linear Algebra at the minimum.

phys 2? the fuck for?

>tfw cyber security major and the only math course i had to do was a single discrete math unit, didnt even have to do stat

Attached: 1535945473776.jpg (720x384, 37K)

How hard is calc2?
