just had my credit card cloned so i'll be changing for Linux for security reasons. Using Windows just for gaming.
So i would like to ask you guys what is the better version for someone going out of Windows. I'm seeing a lot about Mint, what do you guys think? Is it the most popular version of Linux?

kubuntu is generally considered the “best” Linux distribution by most people here

Mint had their website hacked some time ago

Hmm... What about the OS, is it safe? And, because i'm new to the OS, i'm looking for the most popular with the greatest community for any doubt that can appear in time.

>kde
>best anything

Use Xubuntu OP

Install gentoo

Doesn't matter. Having your card stolen (not cloned) isn't a security fault on the OS, it's because your habits are idiotic. You will get your card stolen again no matter what OS you use. You might also get it actually cloned IRL.

But i had my card cloned

KDE is indeed the best DE. Though using it on Ubuntu, or using Ubuntu at all for that matter, is retarded.

So Mint is not good? Is it not safe?

Quit telling people to not use the most widely supported distro.

Op use Ubuntu to start I highly recommend xbuntu because gnome is garbage.

All the major distros are pretty easy to use now (compared to ~15 years ago). I installed Debian + XFCE for my in-laws because they hated the Windows 10 UI, and they are doing fine with it.

Ubuntu is the most popular? What about safety?

I'm thinking about Mint because it looks a lot like windows and it seems that it is based on Ubuntu as well, but you guys are telling me that it is not safe

Xubuntu you fucking faggot

I highly recommend you use Arch. It can be a little tricky to install and has a small learning curve but it is easily the most secure, reliable OS and does not need much maintenance. Highly recommend it for beginners.

Arch is on Manjaro, right? I'm looking on DistroWatch and it is the most popular there

Second this. Go with arch OP. Don't listen to these faggot ass ubuntu shills. Ubuntu is spyware and sends back your data to Amazon: gnu.org/philosophy/ubuntu-spyware.en.html

Manjaro is based on Arch, but most people will just use Arch itself rather than something based on it. It is much easier to use.

Ubuntu is the most widely used, most compatible, Linux distro with a zero difficulty level install and the largest package repo.

The only reason it's shit it Gnome. Xubuntu is literal perfection however.

Choose one distro is being more difficult than i thought tat it would be.
A friend of mine is saying that he tried Mint and had some problem with the audio, it was crackling. It this problem normal?

Ubuntu is also spyware that sends back your data to Amazon.

>largest package repo
This is because every library is a separate package. Sure it's the largest if you count every single library in libboost separately, that alone is a few thousand packages. For actual software, Arch has a way bigger repo.

No, I'm sorry to say but my diagnosis is your friend may have some form of autism, because he won't take the time to read the manpages, setup his xorg.conf correctly and moneypatch his kernel. I bet he's never even compiled his kernel before.

Linux Mint xfce > Xubuntu
With LM I don´t have screen tearing

He is just a nromal user, like me. Who is trying no move away from Windows 7 and hates Windows 10. Is true that nor he or j know how to do this things that you said, but i don't think that we should. This is not our area of expertise. We are both doctors, not computer specialists, like you.

Nah I was just trolling you. I don't know why his sound wasn't working. Most likely a driver issue related to the hardware he was using. Download Ubuntu, Linux Mint or whatever, run them off of a Live USB, test to see it works correctly and that you like it, and if so, install whichever distro you want.

Are the spyware parts also installed when doing a minimal install ?

Ok. I'll try to test them out before instaling.

It is now turned off by default in all versions of Ubuntu. Despite all the fighting people have about distros, in reality there are very little differences between them. For example, Mint is based on Ubuntu and Ubuntu is based on Debian. All of these distros have minor differences in reality, Mint and Ubuntu are just a little easier to use.

Yes I do know this, they are all just basically the same core but with different default DE's, WM's and programs.

Mint Cinnamon and Xubuntu/Kubuntu are best, honestly (if you're not a poweruser). Mint is easy to get used to, Xfce is stable as fuck, KDE has best software and tools. Try all 3 for a week each and see which one you prefer.
If you want to switch immediately then go for Mint, but use a live USB or virtualbox to try out other distros. Nobody can know what your personal preferences are.

Thats great! I'll try to use them all a little to learn which one is best for me. I'm worried about the bugs that can appear, like the crackling sound one that appeared on my friend's computer.

If you're going to go with Ubuntu or Debian, go with a netinstall/minimal install. Don't drink the kool-aid and go with the mega iso.

Explain the link between credit card cloning and OS. Did you really install a fucking virus like a retard? Meaning you used no anti virus on Windows? Did you input your CC into a website
that got breached and expect an OS change will fix that?

I'll start by trying Mint guys. What edtion should i download? What are the differecenes between them?

the hacked website also distributed hacked isos of Linux Mint.

I don't really know how it happened. I never got any virus and never download anything that was dangerous. I don't know if it was my phone too.
The only problem is that it happened, and changes must be made. I'll install linux to buy things online. Gaming and porn still will be on Windows

More support usually means better security

i like how these arch retards are preaching their retardedness to the people around them
if arch is soooo good, why is it that only ubuntu and centOS get support for AMD's proprietary GPU drivers? the arch wiki is shit on this, it doesn't provide you with proper proprietary drivers

bad advice, OP should familiarize himself with linux before doing minimal installs

start with the normal ubuntu-based cinnamon flavour, it's the most normie out of them all

>still NO Ubuntu gaming edition
shit baffles me

>The only problem is that it happened, and changes must be made.

That's not how reality works. If your tire goes flat, rebuilding the engine aint gonna solve shit. You're just going to be suckered out of your money and/or time, and fix nothing.

Some of them have vastly different package managers too, which can be considered a core component

yep

>don't use this distro, I don't like the DE it comes pre installed with!
kill yourself

It's not the DE, it's literally everything else.

are there any drawbacks for an inexperienced user at using Devuan with KDE?

How do I set up tiered storage on Linux Store Mi Style? I really fucking love Store MI

You should be thinking more about what DE you want, rather than the distro. (though I guess the absolute beginner would want something debian based with easy access to proprietary drivers). Most of the DEs can be made to pretty closely resemble windows GUI.
Try Xfce if you want something lightweight and like tweaking things. (You will have to fix the screen tearing yourself though)
Try KDE if you want something mediumweight that looks somewhat like windows 10 and comes with tons of compositing features.
Try Mate if you just want to quickly slap together a functional UI and get to work.
Try Cinnamon if you want a completely out of box experience and don't mind the extra resource usage.

Try GNOME if you want the best DE
