The reason they can use macs is because they already offload all they're high computing needs to a giant server more than likely running a custom Linux based os. Kys

I got a friend who has a degree in physics and works for the national physics institute: he has to use a mac too.
I tell you who doesn't use Apple: engineers. I'm an AE student, a few of my professors had worked for the ESA, one has even been involved with the making of a sensor that went on the Rosetta mission (the mission that landed on the comet): most of them have Thinkpads.
Henry Morales
I did Physics and applied math at top uni as well. I hate Apple shit, but a lot of my profs (including the ones that did numerical analysis) used macs, but just because they didn't run the code themselves.
The guys in experimental shit that had to run their own prototypes used linux environments in not-macs.

This is most likely true for the professor. I know my University tells you to do all your compiling and shit on the servers

They're light, thin, have nice battery and hardware. People who like nice things use them, and that group of people generally contains both morons and intelligent people. Not everyone forces themselves to use bulky hardware to avoid being mistaken for a mindless user. That being said, they are overpriced and I use a ThinkPad myself.

To compile on server is mainly to try to keep different compilers from treating the code differently. Otherwise it may compile on your machine but might not on someone else's, but if it compiles on the server anyone else can then take your file to try to compile and it is more likely to work.

Embedded devs don't, since there's a bunch of compilers and proprietary toolchains which only run on Windows. Thankfully most silicon vendors have started porting their crap to Linux.

Macs have pretty terrible hardware and mediocre software. The real reason why they are everywhere are the following: >people often get aggressive discounts in schools and stuff >it's one of the only popular option out there that doesn't have Windows This doesn't mean it's actually better than Linux on a bulletproof Thinkpad. It's just something you can pick up from pretty much everywhere and it doesn't have Windows. It has nothing to do with premium branding, everyone can clearly afford them. They're just laptops.
Since this was most likely just an ad I'm sending this to the back page.

>Who the FUCK doesn't use apple hardware? People who don't get them for free at work. Tons of places have deals with apple where they get all their hardware from them. If I had the choice between getting a free macbook and having to buy my own computer, I'd get the free one every time. Who gives a fuck if it overheats and dies, or the ram is soldered in, or whatever? Just set it to automatically back up every time it connects to wifi and if anything breaks give it to the IT department and get a brand new one the same day.
If you aren't playing games on it (in which case just build a desktop), it literally doesn't matter in 99% of use cases. They're just overpriced, which that argument goes out the window when you don't have to pay for it. Whether or not companies should be exclusively getting apple products is up for debate, but if you're just a minion working there, you'd be an idiot to not just take the free laptop/iphone.

It's interesting how you can see something everywhere despite it being a statistic minority. I know a ton of people using GNU/Linux, despite it not being the majority-used OS. I guess it's the majority on Jow Forums, but only by a little bit.

It opens properly because of how the weight is distributed, not because of a weak hinge. Go to an electronics store and test it for yourself.
