Previous thread: If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance). Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™
>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
Modern models: >X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light >T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, both Coreboot-compatible (Ivy Bridge CPU support on T420); Quad Core Compatible, Old keyboard swap on *30 series >T520/530; W520/530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0 >T440s >T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement) >P-Series - 15'' + 17'', 4K display, up to 64GB of RAM, Xeon CPU option. Expensive.
Why ThinkPad? >Used machines are plentiful and cheap >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet >Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop >Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain >The best TrackPoint™, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad >Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support
My budget is 800-1k. Give me the best thinkpad I can get. Mostly going to be used to bring to school to finish up degree.
Connor Murphy
Used to be that we would get 3 or 4 /tpg/ threads a day but now its around 1 every two days.
r/thinkpads is where everyone has migrated to because filth in here only think that "modern" means X220.
SAD but I'll give an upvote.
Brody Murphy
Looking to get my first Think pad >Budget 500$ or less > Main use College/Productivity
I'm very new so please throw as much info as you want my way! I'm learning as I go. I have a Lenovo Yoga (that's dying on me) with Xubuntu on it. Been using that for school. Touchscreen and the ability to fold into a tablet is kinda nice but w/e. Please rec me some stuff!
>t450 get a t8100 14" t61 from ebay, a core 2 duo x9000, 8gb pc2-5300, and a new 9 cell battery. itll cost like 200-250 max and last you a good few years. plus, youll be able to upgrade to a t60 body with a uxga ips flexview for a few hundred. then, you can sell this "frankenpad" for like 600 bucks once youre done with school.
Oliver Cruz
yes don't listen to this faggot
Jordan Perry
it's your laptop, do whatever the fuck you want with it.
Charles Reed
i have an x1 carbon gen 2 with 512gb ssd and like really good 3K screen (2880x whatever) i want a better laptop tho is 530 the best one? I am not sure if i could put an amazing screen on it tho?
would like 2gb graphics if possible (to run solidworks)
Are P50 FHD display any good? They have the specs I need but they are more like desktops than a laptop that you can carry on.
Cooper Howard
I recently got a T60 in pretty good shape and decided t use it for my classes. It came with a T2300 and a 120 gig hd. I threw in some more memory, installed mint and everything works great except video playback in firefox.
I get weird diagonal screentearing and i'm wondering what it might come from.
Do any of you have a clue as to what causes this issue?
Alexander Cox
I'm trying to replace my L470 trackpad, but I can't find any information on how to disassemble that part. Even the hardware guide says it's not a replaceable unit: ok1.de/thinkpad/HMM/l470_hmm_en_sp40m11960.pdf
Can anyone help me about it? Any videos or guides?
Chase Wright
I need a 9 cell battery for my x230, I bought my x230 with a fake battery that only lasts 1 fucking hour How do I find a legit seller in Europe or china ? is every seller on ebay a fucking a jew faggit??
Chase Gonzalez
Anons I need some advice on colouring my Thinkpad's body >I want to paint all the red accents green >Replace the red nipple with a green one >Replace (paint) the my enter key with a green (or black) one Never done anything like this, it's a small undertaking but i'd like some advice on where to start and what materials I might need.
They are pretty damn expensive but If you want a legit Lenovo one you can buy it direct from their website.
Blake Ross
>2018 >Core2Duo
Damn, that sucks. They didn't even supply the original? I'm thinking of buying a 2nd 9 cell for my T540P.
Jayden Bennett
My C2D P8700 works great for everything I do.
Daniel Gray
Your standards must be really low user.
Cameron Davis
will tp help me escape the botnet if so then i guess it doesnt matter why one i get x/t series
Noah Edwards
My old laptop is about to die. Thinking of getting one. Found a W520, Core i7, Intel HD and Nvidia Quadro, for around 290 bucks. Should I bite the bullet? I heard the ones with Nvidia are usually bad, but thought it was only with GeForce?
Austin Lewis
I haven't been able to stomach Core2Duo/Quad since 2014. It's so slow by comparison with modern processors. Like running a Pentium III.
James Evans
do you have experience using any Thinkpad models that are accompanied by the numpad? are there any models that fall under the Real Business™ umbrella?
Liam Phillips
T540P has a numpad, it's perfectly serviceable.
Christian Cox
are there any swaps or upgrades that are recommended. thinkwiki shows it ships with 3 different screen resolutions, but only designates one as IPS.
Robert Roberts
I got a x230, but the screen endend up being a little too small. Is there any other model with a bigger screen, same upgradability, and not too big of a pain in the ass to carry around?
Parker Foster
Forgot to mention, I don't do gaming or anything like that. I only care about screen size and battery life.
Jaxson Clark
Posting from my T60.
Stop recommending ThinkPads from 2013 onward, retarded Apple apologists.
what about screen swaps with the T540P? after market an option for 1080p ips? would you have to buy/upgrade with the listed 3k as an only option?
Levi Cook
I dunno, I'm using the 1080 TN panel. I think you'd have to do some digging around to find a compatible 1080 IPS display, it's not standard.
Lincoln Wright
given the thinkpad populations on Jow Forums and reddit, is the Jow Forums /tpg/ incarnation carried over from redoot or is the association switched?
Oliver Foster
Irrelevant. With how bad /tpg/ is, you may change one with the other and there wouldn't be a noticeable difference.
I would even say some Reddit users have come across over here, because "Jow Forums is for shitposting, Reddit is for serious discussion". That's how unintelligent they are.
I have a t450 with the following specs: -i5-5300u -250GB SSD -8GB RAM (can upgrade to 12 with what I have lying around) -768p meme screen
Will it be able to run AutoCad for 2D stuff? I have some monitors I can plug it into at home, but at that point I might as well just use my desktop.
Tyler Gomez
I'm looking to grab a laptop for casual browsing, some programming, etc.
I have an Acer c670 chromebook and its getting a bit long in the tooth. I'm looking to spend $300 or less, I just want something to slap linux onto that I can take with me places, use it on the couch, etc. I have a decent desktop at home. 14in is fine, don't care about screen size.
Any recommendations? My one thing is the screen has to be > 768p, that's become unusable.
Colton Roberts
i want to spend less than 350 dollars. i want vga and 8gb ram. i want to use windows 7.
My t480 arrives on Monday. Probably gonna dual boot it with Ubuntu 18 and windows 10. But I leave for trip on Tuesday morning so I gotta wait until I get back to really play with it. What a tease. Any recommendations on how much space I should leave for Windows?
William Adams
hdmi is okay too
Juan Jones
they dont even show you the condition lol
Juan Davis
Is t420 with 1600x900 i5 2520m worth 195€? I found a guy selling this. This would be my first Thinkpad, gonna use it for programming. How's battery on this? The one included holds ~4 hours, according to seller. Can I libreboot it?
Leo Smith
x20 is only corebootable.
Caleb James
So I can't remove botnet from t420? x20 probably has shit display, right..?
Matthew Sullivan
I had a x220t running linux when I was studying aero. Did all of my 3d solidworks and abaqus on a windows VM with 0 issues. As long as you don't do anything complex you'll be fine
Caleb Ramirez
as far as i understand, coreboot is removing the botnet, but it's a bit more bloated than libreboot. by x in x20 i meant any number like 2, 4, or 5, not an actual model.
there are t420 models with nice displays
Joseph Barnes
Kerbal Space Program
Jaxon Ward
I thought you meant x series Any significant difference between libreboot and coreboot? And what is esata USB?
Elijah Young
Anons, what are we gonna do in 5-10 years when our x220/t420's are obsolete? I'm scared
Grayson Jenkins
51nb.com
Cooper Turner
What is the X220 orignal charger like?
John Diaz
Probably just a standard 65W brick for thinkpads from that era.
Nicholas Hernandez
Libreboot is 100% free, coreboot removes most of the botnet but a tiny bit remains.
Sebastian Miller
From 1 to getting a gf, how hard it is to install libreboot?
It's easy on T60 and X60. On other models you need to open the laptop and use a raspberry pi to flash the chip. youtube.com/watch?v=1K5jo9gk9LQ
Nolan Taylor
I guess I'll have to order RPI then... I assume it doesn't have to be RPI? It can be a chink knockoff? Yeah, I know that story. (s)he has mental illness.
Christopher Gomez
Anything that can be used as a SPI programmer is fine. You'll also need a SOIC clip and some cables, check the install guides on the website. libreboot.org/docs/install/
Joshua Allen
>the most supported distro >most based DE I see no problem there
