My first computer was a Pentium III with 256MB of RAM and 20GB HDD.

Is there any OS that could make this usable as a daily driver?

Windows 10.

Puppy Linux.

templeos

if you are going to use a web browser than the answer is no. Any modern web browser would instantly use all the ram and slow your system to a crawl

Lynx ftw

you could try anything with openbox

openbsd would unironically run really well on that
windowmaker + w3m open to 4chins only uses around 50mb of memory
I managed to install all that + plus the ports tree + compile windowmaker on a 2 gig drive as well

ill offer opera 12.x against that, depending on what P3 OP is talking about

Debian
Depends what you mean by daily driver, but it'd certainly work for fun C programming enjoyment. You could also listen to music and run old software emwith wine

That's actually pretty badass. I'm guessing shitty captcha is still a problem though, right? I do like seeing what people can run with limited hardware.

Any lightweight linux/bsd should work. You couldn't use a modern DE. Something like i3 would probably be OK. You could browse the web with lynx or w3m, and even curate a small pornography collection if you have the technical ability.

Linux(will some lightweight wm),haiku,9front.
Just dont try to use some new browser.

TempleOS requires a 64bit cpu.

Stop watching porn.

>2GB Ram
>core2duo
are you retarded or just pretending? this has nothing to do with OP system and your fetch shoeing small ram usage doesn’t mean shit. also OpenBSD is trash for low power system as the library randomization on boot is slow as fuck on an old machine

FreeBSD for i686

windows 10 requires SSE2 and NX bit

I just realized that RAM still hasn't fallen for the decimal size jew.

You might have luck and even be able to launch X11 with arch32, it's surprisingly light on RAM, and it's a modern distro by all means (including systemd cancer). With that amount of RAM, you'd not be able to do much with it, and swapping would make it even slower than it would be in the first place.
You could run a modern web browser on it, though.
Oh, keep in mind that you might have to hunt down the right GPU for it, I'd try with nvidia stuff, as nouveau might support it.

gentoo w. home buildserver

dude, it's 512M, not 51.2M. a lot of stuff will run comfortably with that

whoops, thinking of another thread
still, 256M isn't massively restricting

It will be if you want to use a web browser for anything, and that's pretty much the basic requirement for a daily driver nowadays.

eh, 256M with a pagefile will run palemoon/midori and a couple tabs, provided the sites aren't really heavy
