Are you your family’s IT guy?
Are you your family’s IT guy?
I'm barely even on the cusp of getting a fucking drivers licence and I'm already become the tech hamster for not just my family, but my school as well.
Yes I am but it's not like my family is dumb. I just have a very high IQ, so doing IT grunt work is easy.
I think understand tech better then the trained professionals at my school
My mother is my only family and she doesn't even use the internet.
>then
lel not sure if joke post or we got a legit lil timmy in this thread
joke post, but my family doesn't even know what a 3.5mm audio jack is
Neither do most smartphone manufacturers.
Underage
Unfortunately, yes.
Mum's pretty good though, she will figure it out if she can first before getting me involved.
Holy Y I K E S.
>stop downloading the internet, you’re making the computer slow
yes, but only in the sense than i was the only one with an interest in computers
my sister sometimes used MSN messenger (and nothing else)
my dad sometimes played project IGI and mscfs2
my mum never touched the family computer
Yes. They don't ask me too often though because they know I get pissed when they tell me what to do while fixing their crap and I just leave it to them.
>brother in law is a lawyer
>ask him a legal question on thanksgiving
>I'm not working. It's a holiday user
>2 hours later
>guess who's bringing me his laptop to remove malware
Yes, and it's always for their shitty iphones and for their computers that are filled with malware adware. When I start deleting and cleaning shit they freak out at me, and when I try to clean out the insides of their Desktops they scold at me.
FUCK YOU, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FUCKING USE AN IPHONE LEAVE ME ALONE OR THROW IT AWAY IF YOU ARE TOO INCOMPETENT TO USE THE FUCKING THING
the only winning move is not to play
organize their messy shit? WHERE'S THE DOC I PUT IN C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\SHIT?!
delete a bunch of malware? MY COMPUTER IS SLOW AGAIN AND I CAN'T FIND SUPER OPTIMISER PRO
fix literally anything 6 months ago? YOU MESSED WITH AND NOW IT'S BROKEN AND IT'S YOUR FAULT!
That happens every time, and at this point I really don't help them at all. I don't even help if they offer me money.
it's too risky
i almost forgot the worse one;
>try to actually explain/teach something instead of "just fix it"
>experience the resistance of a thousand megaohms
they want things to stop breaking, but they refuse to do anything differently, you can't actually help these people, only temporarily pacify them
*crack* *sip* Anyone else remember the time when your parents/sister downloaded a shit ton of toolbars/bonzi buddy/etc, but the viruses got blamed on you for 'playing games'?
I was. But over the years, I've made sure to educate them on the basics they need to install and maintain their operating systems, so now they handle it themselves. Everyone except my father in law who refuses to learn new things, but my wife mostly gets to fix his shit.
You have to think ahead with this stuff because as families grow, you don't want to be stuck with the increasing workload.
Femanon here.My little brother used to turn that in his favor. He would visit porn sites then blame it on viruses. Even when I told my parents that viruses don't just download porn to the computer through the internet browser (he didn't clear history), they still bought his excuses. Until once I took a polaroid photo of him surfing porn sites and threatened to show our parents if he ever visited porn sites again. I also made him clean my room and do all my chores in exchange for not tattling on him. Fun times.
Interesting story. Tits or gtfo.
My room mates r elderly and have a windows laptop. When I moved in 3 years ago I saw it was slow as balls so I inspected the task manager start up thingy and the installed programs they had a shit ton of strange coupon addons and shit installed so I run a malware check ect takes all day to remove all the shit computer became super fast get blamed for removing all there coupon programs they didn’t even use they don’t even have a printer fast forward to today they have jewbuntu installed and I put custom Icons on their desktop All they do is FB and email their Jew friends from nyc
post boi pucci
I have friends that can put together their own computers and load operating systems, sometimes they still run into problems that they simply can't fix.
I've properly instilled the thought that I should only be contacted as a last resort, and when they do bring their computers to me, they get charged money.
As for family, they are either on OSX or Android, with Windows being secondary for compatibility.
I still charge for tasks that take time. For simple things, there is AnyDesk.

What ya gonna do about it ?
@67520270
delet
No idea, kiddo
HAHAHAHA it happens
I hope you told him to eat a dick instead of actually helping him.
My god, the hard drive thrashing this must have caused. Turn it on and walk away for an hour.
I camly told him it was a holiday and I wasn't working. This is a trade of expertise, not the family computer nerd works for free.
fuck that I let them suffer. they're not doing anything important anyway.
at one point our family computer took literally 30 minutes to boot into windows 98
>> get job at medical office managed by aunt during/after college because nepotism
>> garbage refurb windows xp computers. Buy Win 8 Bing Edition machines from best buy to replace machines that break because they want to spend as little as possible. No domain, no AD. EMR software 3 years out of date. Server 2003 database unpatched for 3 years. Same with terminal server.
>> called upon any hours of the day to fix shit that constantly breaks because I'm buttmonkey nephew. Entire database almost wiped because failing drives RAID array.
>> major overhaul because ICD-10. Aunt and owner doctor pay bare minimum to get shit running. No back-ups, just basic RAID 1.
>> doctor breaks his arm and I have 3 months with literally no work to do (my actual position was surgery coordinator... Can't schedule surgeries if the doctor's arm is broken) so I overhaul security and create an off-site back-up system. Set-up VPN so that RDP isn't bare-ass open.
>> Never take days off and finally go on vacation for a week... immediately get called-on to fix dumb shit, pestered relentlessly.
>> refuse to assist and flip my lid and tell her she's a fucking idiot. Block aunts number while i'm away. Vacation ruined.
>> gave my 2 weeks shortly after returning and got an actual IT job
>> moved across the state and make almost twice the money now at an MSA that respects work/life balance.
>> no more IT for family.
feels good man.
That's an ass, not a bob.
Yep. I was also the IT guy back in elementary and high school because apparently this shit's hard or something.
Also I'm thankful that my family just trusts me with everything I say unlike

but > bob
Bitch, lasagna > all
Yeah, I usually make them buy me beer to remove all the junk off their laptop or reinstall Windows.
>Are you your family’s IT guy?
Haven't been since 12 years ago when my asshole cousin called me over to fix his computer and he wasn't even home. Told me to come over and ran off. Went out of my way for almost two weeks trying to meet up with him to fix his shit. Find out a month later that he paid some random guy to fix his box. Never dealt with fixing family computers again especially when my niece tried dumping off her malware infested box after he daughter tanked it again.
Used to but now that they know how to google stuff I'm not needed anymore, thankfully
What do you think about incest?
no because i'm an antisocial asperger and everybody is scared to ask me something
what does you having a vagina have to do with anything?
source of that manga?
My dad is often chatting in chatboxes online. And always clicked away when I approached him.
So I once took a picture via the mirror behind him to see what he was doing. Turns out it was a bisexual chatbox.
Of course my dad is a Christian, so it was to be expected.
Fuyu no Hashikko. Try yandex next time, kouhai.
I have been deliberately pretending to be technologically illiterate just to avoid this exact situation.
They all make fun of me because my grandma even knows how to use an iPad better than I do, but that beats having to be the 24/7 customer service anyday.
I used to. And of course every problem occurring after I helped them with something was my fault.
Then my macfag brother evangelized them into buying MacBooks. now they all have iPhones, and they also bought one macbook pro, one macbook air and a "family iPad" for youtube and Skype.
>How do you post the picture on the Facebook son?
>Did you hack my phone you damn rascal? (After my grandma's phone got a virus because she was clicking on some website and think because I'm the most tech literate in the home, that mean I'm the hacker)
>How do you use the mouse?
>Femanon here
literally irrelevant to the story, tits or gtfo
>grandmother says that her phone is broke and we need to go into the city to get a new one
>"it won't turn on the screen is just black"
>turn on her phone
>it works fine
>she turned off her phone by accident "bad feeling in hands"
>literally just needed to turn it on with the power button, not the home button
Old people I swear
Yes thankfully. All local repair shops install pirated windows 10 with bloatware at the slightest presence of trouble like high temperatures or fan noise.
>dad is watching a FUCKING LOUD video at FUCKING TWO AM
>tell him to lower the volume but he doesn't
>192.168.1.1 and stop internet while keeping wifi on
>5 minutes later the sound finally stops
>finally
>a while after i fell asleep my dad starts shaking my shoulder telling me the internet is not working
>"oh sorry i thought you were awake son. the wifi is showing question sign and i can't access internet can you fix it"
>tfw
I am my village IT engineer
Me fix broken computers and install java on computers
Sort of. Parents are relatively savvy and neither of their parents has anything resembling a computer. Gave old iMacs to gfs parents and they are fine with them. Installed Win10 LTSB on a new HD in her nan’s PC and didn’t tell her the admin pass so she can’t fuck it up too badly. Get occasional calls asking why her printer isn’t on the network, 9/10 times she’s unplugged it .
Yes, I honestly think the part of the brain that deals with technology and mechanical reasoning does not exist for my mother, it's frustrating and I refuse to believe it's just because she's of a different generation, I think she's just thick.
My policy when it comes to free IT work with any immediate friends/family is this: I don't mind doing more simple repairs as long as they pay for any parts that are needed and they don't abuse it. When they do, I start asking for a hourly payment for labor (usually shuts them up really quick), or outright refuse to do it.
Only two people pissed me off enough. First was my ex-father in law that was disabled and would break his PC every other week due to downloading shit or literally dropping it on the floor. I was fine at first with it, but there came a point where I was literally coming over every week to fix something and said enough. Come to find out he went behind my back to a PC repair shop I used to work for and used my name to get a discount on work. Was not happy about that one at all.
Second is a friend and her family that really abused what I did for them. Help them upgrade their router? "Its acting up, its your fault it is acting like this, come and fix it!" Built a PC for my friend? Says it is not working right despite taking it home several times and can't find anything wrong with it. Give any sort of technical advise? "I don't think you are right, user and don't believe you". These people are real fucking shitheads, especially after one recent thing I did for them: (Next post)
>Connection in my friend's room for wi-fi is bad, router is on the other side of the house.
>They don't want to spend the money to have the ISP come out and install a Ethernet port.
>Offer to do it for them (Stupid).
>Ordeal that lasts 6 months. Can't run it under the house because they did not want me to, and running it through the attic was a no-go because they piled so much shit in there.
>Literally only way was to run a 100ft Ethernet cable from friend's room to the router.
>Have a literal shoestring budget to do this on, like as cheap as you can get.
>Hide it the best I can with running it behind stuff and using wall clips (Not great, but once again rails were not a option).
>Everything working just as intended.
>Get a complaint later that it looks ugly.
>"user, why did it have to go up the wall?"
No fucking shit it looks ugly, I had to literally ghetto rig it through the house because no one cleaned up and had to run it up high to keep their dumbass dog from chewing through it with adhesive clips because they didn't want any nails used. Maybe if you let me run it the way I have with EVERY FUCKING IT JOB I WORKED, MAYBE THERE WOULDN'T BE A VISABLE CABLE.
...I never wanted to tear my hair out as much dealing with these fucks. The entire experience made me rethink my "helping friends set up shit" route and I am pretty much charging from here on out.
>user every time you come down my pc gets slower it's viruses from those video games you play
Turns out my Grandma never shuts down her laptop and just closes the lid and bitches about how bad it's battery life is
can confirm this guys mom is thiccccc
How do I get college girls like you? I'm a dom
I don't believe that's the case. I think a lot of people just don't put any effort trying to understand and remember the details even if you explain it to them plainly. The "just fix it" mindset causes them to just nod in hopes you're going to shut up and leave so they can continue doing the exact same thing they used to up till now since it worked for them so far.
yes i am, but i have patience, so most of the time it's a only a one time problem solving and explaining.

and this is human nature 101..
the reason heart disease exist is because people refuse to accept eating fat will make you fat, despite literally millions of studies proving that lifestyle diseases are caused by lifestyle and popping pills doesn't work
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>sweetheart why does the google not work?
>can you show me how to send emails again?
>why does the internet sign have a yellow triangle there?
>what does this update now thing mean, is it one of your viruses?
Yes, and unlike everyone else in the world it's a positive experience for me. My brother is also pretty knowledgeable about these things but he doesn't live at home anymore.
Other than him, my parents and sister both consult me before buying any technology, even after NY sister got married and moved out.
As for my parents, mom is really bad at using any kind of phone or computer, but she acknowledges that and always appreciates my help. Dad is in a kind of weird situation though. He went to school for EE so has familiar with very technical aspects of computers (more so than me), but struggles with some more basic things.
For example he called me over to his room yesterday because the sound wasn't working. The speakers were on and the YouTube video was unmuted, but he didn't realize the windows system sound was set to 0. He's also very thankful about my help though.
Reading through other people's accounts is honestly very surprising to me. I can't believe so many families would treat you that way just for helping them.
>Work all day as IT, running around trying to assist users and understand proprietary applications that the in house developers refuse to give insight into just so they can forcefully keep their jobs
>After eight plus hours of all this mother asks me to explain how to do shit in a random program
>One that I've never used before and she has been using for years
LOL!
Same thing happens here.
My dad will fall asleep watching a documentary.
Hitler is yelling at 2 AM.
Have to turn of the router for a minute and turn it back on.
For my family and some friends, I should start charging for it.
is it just a dad thing to watch hitler documentarys late at night? mine does it too
Eh, most IT stuff in my family gets directed to my older brother. If they ever ask me, I just ask how much they're paying and they fuck off and ask my brother. Exception is my mother.
For my close friends, I don't mind doing it so long as they're reasonable about it and I generally ask them to just buy me lunch or something.
yes, even though the rest of my family lives on the other side of the world from me and they still ask me to fix shit for them over fucking teamviewer
I haven't talked to my parents in 4 years.
Why
what happened
>just closes the lid
Fugg is that not what you are supposed to do
Yes and also at work(hired as IT guy)
Sadly yes, also

What can you do about an iPhone except close all open apps, check storage then reboot the phone?
From what I can tell people dont close open apps or ever reboot which is the main cause of issues.
Sorry babe theres no studies linking dietary fat to fat gain. Carbohydrates lead to fat gain.
Fat gets turned into ATP to be used for energy and carbs get turned into fat to be stored for later use
Tell him it updates at this time when people are usually sleeping and wont be done till morning
That irritates the shit out of me. I always wore headphones when watching shit, or I turned it down to not disturb anyone. But oh no when I had to wake up at 6 AM the next day my dad absolutely had to watch some loud as fuck action movie in the living room near my room.
