Are you being served?

Servers are technology, why don't we have a thread for this?

Let's discuss servers ITT, both home and commercial because why the fuck not.

You're new here

I haven't been here for over a year but now I'm interested in servers, so why not?

why dont we have a general thread for servers?

>what is general thread

Is that Raspbery Pi with SATA?

I have a file server running FreeNAS. It also seeds a shit load of Archive.org torrents and linux ISOs

This is my server. I spent way too much and it performs poorly, but at least it is different.

Attached: pig-lipstick.jpg (678x381, 35K)

got a dell r710 stuffed it with 6x4tb sas drives with freenas installed AMA.

does having a network folder make a computer a server

Yes

why didn't you buy the 16 bay 910?
you some kind of poorfag?
>AMA
no in srs, where you get 4tb sas cheep?

I use digital ocean because home servers are unreliable

There's a general. What is ctrl+f "server"... What a fucking newfag

some guy in my local area was offloading a bunch of drives from an azure SAN (i suspect these might come up more as MS charge ~20k a year to have one). ended up getting a bunch of new drives half price. desu even the 710 is probably overkill for me but i have shit internet speeds so it will be something of content cache with a bunch of automated downloaders and crawlers also a decent amount of ram for VMs and experimentation.

Serve me your files daddy

Admittedly there's no general right now, as the three people who usually open it, decided that Jow Forums isn't interested in such lately and they're leaving it for the text channels for now.

Check above, usually we actually got a general for servers. Join us at

>irc
nice

noice score - actually have previously mentioned 16 bay 910 (empty, sadly) - refuse to buy less than 4TB, still waiting on 16x4tb SAS appearing here (Bong). And waiting.
>probably overkill
never - mines (intended for) VMs, but, they're always worth it, if only to throw in 192GB cheap RAM for shitz and giggles.

>192gb
well you might as well if you can find it cheap. I suppose the advantage of enterprise-y hardware is that the second hand buyers market (as companies rarely buy second hand). Most of the stuff I need will be in freebsd jails so not much need for that much power, VMs will be temporary thing for when I experiment with other OSs, nixos is quite fun right now.

Banana Pi

I've got an Orange Pi PC2, looking to turn it into a remote desktop and NAS.
What I want is to be able to leave it running 24/7 torrenting and to be able to access it while I'm out to check on my torrents and start new ones. I have unlimited internet at home but it's capped at 12 down 1 up.

I'm going to pair it up with a 2tb laptop hdd. The orange pi pc2 has gigabit lan which is what caught my attention but it was truthfully more of an impulse buy as now that I've got it, I've got Armbian running on it downloading my torrents directly to the sd card.

I've done a quick search but most lead to using the orange pi nas board for the pi zero. I'm not keen on buying an expansion board and waiting another 3 weeks for it to arrive...

Is what I want doable?

And if what I want is doable, can someone please point me in the right direction?
This is my first time attempting anything like this.

If there's no general, open the general

I have a stack (7 I think) of mac-mini's (i7 26somethingQM / 16GB RAM / 2x 1TB drive) that I'm thinking of throwing CentOS on and turning into a combination CEPH / OpenStack lab, mostly just for fucking around and learning.

Wonder how much thunderbolt to 10GB is...

I'm thinking of replacing that server on the right.
It only holds two HDDs and the motherboard only has two SATA ports. I'm using the mini PCI-e for USB3, so the only drive expansion is through a PCI (yes, PCI) to SATA card or SATA splitters, which could corrupt multiple drives in the event of one failure.
I want gigabit Ethernet and support for 3+ SATA HDD.

why do you have 7 mac minis?

Because they were free, and if I decide I don't want them, I can sell them.

Not that user, but...

R810 master race, because MD1200/1220's are a thing.

Joking aside, I have a well enough configured R720XD that I'll be using for storage / VM's.

Yeah as long as you don't use a shitty USB to SATA adaptor.

That was my plan...
How else would I get sata on it?
Why wouldn't that work?

>That RCA plug
Is that Coaxial audio or composite video out?

Composite, i think.

It's a banana pi.

How are these hard drives being powered
I see the cables, I just want to know what's powering it. A link to something

I don't know if it's more pathetic to blabber about generals on Jow Forums, or to post a screenshot from a smartphone to argue about server generals on Jow Forums. Back in the days both conducts would have been considered punishable or at least laughable

What are those ethernet cables? They look like display ports.

Is there any reason to use FreeNAS over Win 10 when all you want is to share some anime and porn over a LAN?

They're ethernet cables. They look like ethernet cables.

Will I be able to use my home server as my router if I shove a quad NIC in it? What are some fancy things I could do, given it has a second gen 4C/8T i7?

Sure.
You just have to change one flag to allow packet routing.

How would i proceed to setup a pi that checks a webpage evryhour and downloads newly posted links?

Write a script in your favorite language.
Add it to the cron.

I have a low profile Optiplex with an i5 2400, a 128GB SSD, and a 4TB HDD. The mothebroard abd PSU are proprietary (not ATX) because Dell are cunts, so transferring to a different case would be expensive. What would be the easiest way of expanding this? Firewire/thunderbolt card and external drives? Building a new server with room for more drives? Just buying a separate NAS?

I have a raspberry pi 3, running raspbian, running sonarr, radarr, nginx, some other stuff. Usb powered hub, with a 4tb external hard drive. I have a seedbox that I pay for (I can't torrent on my isp), and I have an aria2c script to download stuff from the seedbox to the pi, and storing it on the external hard drive. This runs 24/7. I also have a tightvnc server on it. I don't know anything about orange pie but as long as it's equally as good, you'll be fine. But you're being vague, what exactly more do you want to do? Why do you need extra hardware for the Nas? Get a powered us hub, plug in a hard drive, or I guess get hardware to be able to plug sata in via gpio pins. Then if you want to torrent on your own internet, install deluge daemon, or transmission daemon. For remote desktop, you want gui? Then install tightvncserver. All this is pretty easy.

Stick to generals you cunt, otherwise it gets past my filters

expanding as in adding more disks? just get a pci/e sata controller

>oh no mommy im seeing a tech thread on Jow Forums make it stooooop

Attached: 1534416767233.jpg (700x461, 50K)

Adding more disks, yes. The main issue is physical room, can I use those externally?

Easiest? New motherboard, new case. Then you get all the standardised stuff you could want.

Might end up cheaper in the long run.

New MB, Case, PSU for an ancient CPU that runs well, but it's fucking impossible to get motherboards for around here. It'd probably cost me $100 just for the MB.

Are you retarded? Even a 12year old would see that those are non standard ones.

>decided that Jow Forums isn't interested in such lately
Jow Forums decided it. Beside some negroe shitting on the few new people who were willing to learn people didn't stick a lot.

t. /hsg/ pasta owner.

The orange pi has 3 USB port as well as a micro USB OTG port, any reason why I can't just plug a 2.5" HDD directly to the pi with a USB to SATA enclosure?

Not really.

I've never seen display port cables with retention clips on them, but maybe that's just me.

Did anyone took him for real? But yeah can't blame people for not sticking if the whole thread resolved around setting up a machine that won't be touched again soon when configured properly.

Here's your you. Now go kill yourself

Congrats. That looks nothing like the retention clips on ethernet cables.

How do I filter all Anime images entering my network?

Windows firewall

Have you ever seen an ethernet cable in real irl life, user?

>capped at 12 down 1 up
>gigabit lan

you bought the orange pi because of its gigabit LAN support when your network is capped at 12 down 1 up? lmfao retard

>internet == network
:/

That a good USB hub user? Thinking of picking one up for myself, though I kinda bought a different one already because I couldn't find that one in the shop so I don't have a reason to buy it.

this is an intelligent post

No.
The USB2 controller chip died and shorted to ground causing it to get really hot and the USB2 ports to not work while the USB3 still worked.
Which is why I cut the cable off and wired up a chink PSU to it to provide power for the cluster.

Good to know!

Thanks user.

still rocking my N40L

I'm counting at least 6 regular hsg fags by now. Any more?

I've got a poverty spec server, use it for plex, storing junk, and messing with debian.

I want to run a 4tb file server for my entire house (6 students) and have the ability to acsess remotely. I am familiar with command line. What should I use?

microsoft access

1.win10 is cancer
2.ZFS

quick post more battlestation threads

Do you use transmission on FreeNAS? I could never get it to work because I don't understand BSD file access. Some lame ass stuff.

There's many threads about them all the time...

sudo shutdown /r now

Would it be cheaper to just replace it with a pi at this point?
Or even a shitty laptop?

Just because of heat, power consumption, and performance?
It's not going to cost much to upgrade from that...

>Would it be cheaper to just replace it with a pi at this point?
I have a Pi 2b but it's slower than the pile of parts I had laying around, plus it doesn't have sata or pci (for my usb3 card)
>Or even a shitty laptop?
I'd considered that but then I wouldn't be able to put in more than one hard drive (i have the 1tb laying around I just haven't maxed out the first one yet)
>It's not going to cost much to upgrade from that...
Definitely, the next step is buying a used optiplex with ddr3 or maybe even ddr4 when I get a job, right now as a NEET it's got enough power for plex and practicing shell scripting

You can put a second hard drive in the dvd drive Bay, and then if it has usb 3.0 then you can use those too, usb 3.0 won't bottleneck a 2.5" sata hdd.

But fair enough, i had no idea that a pi would be so slow that it's noticeably worse than a Pentium D...

i use blu-rays for long term backup

banana PI has a full speed sata, it's actually very fast. The bottleneck is the CPU for HDD -> ethernet speeds
unlike the pi which is the shared bandwidth of usb/ethernet which is the bottleneck
easily the best board for it's price ($35) beating everything until the ODROID which is like $65

How does it feel to deal with 12 year-olds and mic spammers on a daily basis?

People still play tf2?

i guess if you're that poor 12yo kid who doesn't have a computer that can play fortnite

Not popular enough to have to deal with that. It's kind of a niche sub-community and I don't see things blowing up out of control any time soon.
I mean... There's people who still play TFC too. It's becoming a lot more niche now and while I'd managed to accumulate 2.2k hours since 2011, it's far from my main game nowadays. Mainly got involved with it because I know how the ins and outs of SourceMod, permissions management, and all the other little goodies it takes to make a custom server just work.
