Most people had slow as fuck internet and every once in a while it seemed like they'd get wise and change their password, sometimes to something difficult to crack. It sucks coming home only to have to find out you've been kicked out of the internet again and need to get back in or switch to someone else. By this time I had a steady income and paying for my own high speed internet wasn't a big deal.

This was a while back when the defaults on wireless internet was less secure. A lot of people still had WEP which is ridiculously easy to crack and the people with WPA often had PSK which could be easily exploited as well.
