Let's talk about Debian

Is it true that Debian is now basically downstream from Ubuntu?
Is it true that Ubuntu basically does all patching, fixing, security updates and Debian just leeches off?
What happened to Debian?
Does it even have active maintainers?

None of this is true, why would you even think that?

Heard it from Jow Forums.

Just like the rest of this anime website, don’t take anything here as fact or seriously

you're too innocent to use Jow Forums

>gee Ubuntu seems pretty similar to Debian
>Debian must be ripping off Ubuntu

Well, none of this is true and it's very simple to see why. The life cycle of the systems is completely different.

Debian usually keeps supporting a software version and backporting updates way after ubuntu moves off from it.
If you use an LTS ubuntu system basically none of the software it was running in the release day will be in the same version in the EOL day. On a debian system it's the exact opposite.

Also if you ever happen to interact with the Debian development community you will see that no one takes arguments of the kind "but ubuntu and fedora did so" seriously.

ubuntu is still based on debian testing

How is Debian for a gnu/linux newbie?

It's fine. Most distros are fine.
