Downside: If for some reason your disk is mounted read-only, you need to boot back into windows and shut down your machine. If for some reason you do a hard shutdown, you just can't write to disk lol.

If you want to try it:
1) Install Oracle VirtualBox
2) Download .iso of elementaryOS
3) Open VirtualBox and create a virtual machine by following instructions i.e. clicking 'Next' few times

Basically it installs the filesystem into a file under a windows environment, you boot to it like any other OS and uninstall it by deleting the file and removing the boot entry (only downside is speed)

Use the built in partition resize utility in windows and make some room for the Linux install.
20GB is often enough for a try out environment.
Use a Live distro ov Linux like Puppy Linux where you can save your session on the same USB that you
boot from or on any HDD, EXTx, Fat, NTFS.
