It's subjective.
Microsoft font renderers try to make sure that the output matches the pixel grid as closely as possible to preserve readability, even if it might not match the typeface design perfectly.

Apple tries to match the typeface as closely as possible at the cost of possibly being a bit blurrier.

Now, this might have changed but I'm pretty sure that's still the main difference. Not sure about linux.

windows and linux have to work with all possible screen types and pixel densities, mac only has a selected few models.
for what it's worth, if you set up font smoothing right for windows, it looks pretty good too.
and on linux, well, Microsoft has the patent on sub pixel font smoothing, so it's not enabled by default. you have to build one package yourself, but with that it's as good as the other operating systems (when you have proper fonts installed)
