Dubstep originated from UK garage, which many felt had become too geezerish and wide boy. So they stripped it back to it's component parts and took heavy influence from drum and bass that focuses on soundscapes and dub reggae, which is all over London. Hence the name dubstep and the focus on lots of bass and reverb.
