Why do people use Linux to hack almost exclusively?

Because it's hard to win the Tour-de-France with training wheels on your bike.

I am not understanding this analogy.

OP can you post again your question I do not understand?

He means "Why do people almost exclusively use Linux when hacking."

Try linking a bunch of Windows software together to accomplish anything, you'll soon understand why.

It's more of a bare bones OS, it's like driving a tank as opposed to a car.

Because in Hackers the movie they use Linux.

I have literally no idea

Honestly, it's because most of the common security tools are Linux native. That being said, many of the top reverse engineering/bug hunting platforms are only available for windows. So I guess you could say that the penetration and exploit delivery is mainly done in Linux while exploit development is mainly done in windows

You wanna know why? It's because it's proprietary, closed source software.
Consider this article from the aircrack-ng wiki
aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=aircrack-ng_suite-under-windows_for_dummies

Edit: most (if not all) reversing platforms will run on Linux with wine, so you really don't have to leave the posix world

And how does that help with hacking?
Also.. driving a tank is more bare bones than a car?

This

It's hard to get low level socket access in windows

Because people on windows aren't bored.

OP here

see

>hacking on mac or windows
>when the OS secretly logs everything you do and sends it back to the company daily

yeah good luck with that, lad

Thank you for explaining this. Now I understand. People use Linux because it has the security software.

I've never got that 3D visual filesystem working correctly on my linux mint.

These are pretty much the reasons. GNU/Linux has a majority of the security software that hackers need, in part because it's such a free and open system that allows it to function as effectively as possible. That free system also prevents tyranny and oppressive operating system conditions, which helps preserve the privacy of the hacker.

Install GNU/Linux

Yeah. And because for infosec, besides obvious programming knowledge, you need to be somewhat proficient in system administration, networking, linux tools (keep in mind that you'll probably be trying to hack linux machines) low level OS stuff, etc. And if you are, you are probably running linux anyway.

You mean this one? It compiles and runs just fine on Debian.

It's called movie visualisation, expressing something so the crowd would understand...

I think he means this picture related.

wtf, how did you get access to my files?

Mess with the best, die like the rest.

Because they like unix but don't want to use mac or freeBSD.

is this the best movie ever made?

Only the best best best best movie ever made. Hack the planet!

It's an actual operating system and not a baby fisher price toy

/thread

Is this some kind of dumb joke / bait or are you serious?
If serious please learn to computer and you will know why

Many scanning and network tools rely on low level access to sockets and drivers. It's vastly easier to accomplish this in a Linux environment

Don't be a dick. Everyone has to start somewhere. Op's question may be his starting point

This is wrong on so many levels. Why are you answering the question you have no fucking clue?
I do bug hunting as a side gig, and 95% of time Linux is all I need. The rest is emulation of different architectures.

That 5% is IoT stuff but my main thing is reversing protocols which I do from Linux... Emulation is just to confirm proof of concept

Oh I'm sorry sunshine but if he ever used anything besides Windows he would have his answer.
You can't just jump into exploitation of systems without being really familiar with the intricacies of system you are trying to exploit. I'm sorry but there's no shortcut here an question is equivalent to "teach me hoe to hack. "
It just doesn't work that way

Bad as it is, now I feel like watching that movie again.

The top two debugging/reverse engineering platforms, Ida and immunity debugger, only exist on windows. Your anecdotal example used as general proof tells me that you're either a woman, lying, or both.

You're a fucking faggot. I'm sure I'm not the first to tell you this

>That 5% is IoT stuff but my main thing is reversing protocols which I do from Linux

What are you using? Wireshark and tcpdump?

Driving a tank makes it possible to drive at more places and deal with more situations. It's much more versatile than a car, but it needs also much more fuel and care.
Most people don't need a tank for their normal life, a car is just fine for them, but some people do need something more powerful.

You're overreacting. Please don't sway away from the question that was asked.

Not all hackers use linux, I use freebsd. The majority do use linux because of prebuilt tools for kiddies and an already long standing community of hackers. Keep in mind there are people who define hacker differently and people who hack different things. Someone who may like to screw with websites may not use the same tools as someone who reverses software to do what he wants. So their choice of os might be different.

it keeps out the normies
