It turns out he was unironically an excellent coder, because when they started stripping out his code in 1.6, performance dropped like a rock. 1.8 is fucking unplayable because of it. Performance started going up with 1.9 but they introduced a massive fucking memory hog in with how they handle model and texture data so thats fun.
