I bought a used optiplex 990 and slapped a 1050ti in it. At 1080p it plays everything just fine at decent frame rates and good detail
No thanks, any card below something like a GTX 1070 gets destroyed by MSAA even on 1080p so the idea of playing games with a 1050 Ti is just delusional unless you have low standards for visuals.

Can kinda see op's point. If all you play is older titles then buying a $500 card is way overkill for them. Graphics cards in general have gotten way over priced imo. I remember when $200 - 400 was the high end bracket with $100 budget level. Now? You blow the same amount on a card as you would a game console. The game console will last maybe 10 yrs. The card, maybe 2 - 4 till it's "obsolete" and replaced by another high dollar card. With a lot of games now "ports" of console titles which makes more sense from money point of view? Blowing money on something that will last you 10 years or blowing money on something that only will do maybe 4.
Not everyone is poor and have to make decisions based on their budget. I don't even play games all that much, but I have a 1080 Ti so I can enjoy them at their best when I want to.
This happens to me, I got an MSI 390 shortly after release and end up playing Nuclear Throne / In Celebration Of Violence / etc 2d toaster games most of the time

it's plenty for me, and excessive frankly. The most intense thing it has to deal with is visual effects in KDE. I don't play games and don't do a whole lot of CAD stuff lately, so my 1050Ti does everything i need and more.
However, if I played games and stuff, I would have invested in a nicer card. Probably a 1070 or something.

I have a RX 480 and together with a 1440p FreeSync screen I'm having a great time playing any game with high settings, even variable FPS from 60 to 144 feels smooth thanks to it.
No idea why I'd need to go for a Nvidia card with worse ecosystem and pricing?

Witcher 3 is a slow-paced game, so you lose nothing playing it at 30fps.

yes I have a laptop with a gtx 1050 inside and a desktop with a gtx 970. I think you do need more than a gtx 1050 ti if you want 1080p max settings, high resolutions, vr or high refresh rate

The reason I posted all those screenshot was to show how little that stuff actually matters. The game looks so similar and considering the price disparity in cards, it hardly seems worth it.

While running around the open world, the framerate was fluctuating between 40-55fps and was jumping around so much that I said "fuck it" and just set it to 30.

My vega 64 is running pegged in most games at 1080p, it's certainly being utilized entirely. Yeah I'm getting extremely high frame rates, but after being used to high frame rates I could never go back to 60fps with dips to 30.
i was one of the fewer ones who got an RX580 (asus) for msrp ar release for 200 euro, and mostly i only play csgo, get consistent 300+ fps at WUXGA on high settings so im fine

Sure, I could, but I like using my 1070Ti to it's max capability. I also got it for free due to an RMA I sent for my 970. Sometimes I'll set other settings lower to keep my resolution at 4k so I can get a minimum of 60fps, works out alright.

I think the beauty of PC gaming is being able to to do more. You can use any peripherals you want, being able to tweak stuff, online and shit like that. Also much more games.

Nvidia didn't want to make a new gen until the billions of 1000-cards have actually sold out which they would never be because cryptomeme is dead and nobody wants to buy an old card for launchprice (and cards just got back to launch prices recently, after dropping in price very slowly).
Then Nvidia realized that some people are actually upset and AMD is doing nothing either. So they decided to release a bunch of prototypes. They're not even subtle about it either. They said "well, here are some new cards and they're a bit expensive"
That's the beauty of a PC in general. With a PC, you can do so much more than you could with both a laptop and console combined.

Some of these are better than others but they're the best VR games I've played. But it's Elite that typically has me put the headset on every day, although that's a really love it or hate it game.
You're probably in ASW constantly in graphics heavy games. Some people don't notice the artifacts, some do. For a game with lots of HUD elements like ED, I can't stand it. Even my 1070 struggles to get 90 fps everywhere with 1.25 supersampling (which is necessary for text legibility).
Oh, and of course Skyrim and Fallout 4 VR. The latter runs like shit desu, even on a 1080ti, but still pretty fun.

I play in 4k on a 1080p monitor , I didn't believe there was a difference but there is , the graphics are much sharper and detailed on 4k even on a 1080p monitor. Probably because they use more textures or something I don't know...
