Use Chrome instead and make sure "Hardware acceleration" is enabled in advanced settings (it is by default).
Your system should be fast enough for 4k no problem.
Also with Safari you will be limited to 1080p since it doesn't support VP9, which is what Jewgle uses.

mac os has always been garbage at video playback, compared to linux on ppc machines and later windows too. whether it is driver support, outdated graphics apis, or most likely a shitty software codec i can't say. probably all of them. macos tends to use 5x the cpu cycles to play the same video as windows.
