Ok so I've got a 11 year old Acer Aspire 5720 (just like in the pic) and I want to install a SO that's user friendly and responsive. It's mainly for my parents, they just want to go to a few websites like facebook and shit and so some word processing.
It came with windows vista. then I upgraded it to win7, that didn't work out so good. Then I tried a few Linux distros: Ubuntu, Mint and Debian. They all don't seem very optimized, but maybe i'm using versions that are too current for it. Right now it's running Debian and the desktop doesn't load.
I'm thinking of installing a lightweight version of XP now. What do you think?
lubuntu is pretty rapid on old PCs, recommend you try it first before using XP... in fact just forget about XP altogether it's a bad idea in 2018
Dylan Powell
Parabola with fvwm.
Cameron Watson
LXDE isn't that light. It is better to just use a light window manager and not worry about a DE.
David Robinson
If it could run Vista then LXDE isn't much of a problem
Ryder Jackson
You're better off using Vista with the latest service pack than any XP. Your parents however would be better off shelling out a couple hundy for a current model computer that wont leave as much of their credit card numbers, logins and passwords and other personal info hanging out in the wind because it can't run newer software.
I should have put the word This and a comma at the beginning of this post.
Liam Nguyen
He meant OS, moron.

How much memory does this badboi have? Max it out with used ebay sticks and then install win7 or 10

You should rub your dick on it before your dad does. You know that old fart is gonna jerk the gerk and click whatever porn he can find, including things ending in .exe.
Brayden Green
This just highlights how bad the windows OS model is. What kind of operating system expects users to just grab executable files from around the web and run them? It's retarded. And people say it's a good OS for illiterates.
I'm running lubuntu on an aspire one with an atom n270 and it works for light browsing and as a typewriter. You'll have to fiddle with the swap settings if you have less than 2gb ram, though.
Ryder Sanders
>core 2 duo It's adequate, I use an old core 2 duo laptop as a gaming machine and it handles multitasking nicely. If you're illiterate, install lubuntu. If it has enough RAM to run a modern web browser, it should be more than enough for your parents.
Zachary Hall
13.10 was 5 years ago.
Luke Hernandez
>100mb on 13.10 How is that light let alone super light?
Blake Lewis
Don't be a retard.
Isaiah Howard
LXDE is still the same.
It's super light compared basically to any other mainstream OS.
Lucas Taylor
Sorry to tell you but Ubuntu or Vista just aren't gonna run on this piece of shit.
Daniel Thompson
Xubuntu seems to be the best choice for this case. Easy to use and relatively lightweight.
Leo Bell
OP here. in my native language it's written SO.

OP here.
Ok so maybe i'll try lubuntu. What version is the best? idk if the latest is a good idea.
Ian Cooper
>It's super light compared basically to any other mainstream OS. It isn't an OS, it's a DE. It's not lighter than pretty much any window manager. And it isn't the same, it uses 200MiB now.
Oliver Allen
After you install Ubuntu install dwm and start that from your display manager instead.
Wyatt Johnson
16.04 lts. 18.04 lts is still very rough. Don't bother with stuff that isn't lts if the laptop is going to your parents.
Andrew Cooper
literally anything as long as you got 2x2gb RAM modules and an SSD.
Dylan Ramirez
>2yr old distro Don't you think it's too recent?
Leo Barnes
>Acer Aspire 5720
Core 2 Duo T5250 just the minimum baseline to do anything useful. will do as an e-mail and facebook machine. might be OK with youtube too, but you may hear the fan spinning loudly and it getting hot. same with javascript-heavy sites.
XP will work, but consider that firefox is abandoned, and XP itself will be abandoned in 7 months. it's good if you plan to never connect to the internet though.
look into linux mint mate, ubuntu mate or something with xfce.
I also agree with most posters' assessment that you should have at least 4 GB of RAM. an SSD should also speed things up a lot (120GB drives are cheap these days).
Leo Rogers
>email You could run mutt on a PowerPC 405e. eMail is not intensive. >facebook >youtube Faggot shit.
Jacob Parker
I think it's pretty clear he meant sausage omelette.
>but maybe i'm using versions that are too current for it
You should be able to get Debian Jessie on it, it manages to run fine on PS3 with only 250 MB of ram.
Josiah Nelson
No, all these minimum specs distros try to maintain low requirement with each release. Most of the time they succeed well enough.
Andrew Bennett
just got a Thinkpad x120e, 4 ram, amd e 350, what os should I use ??
Tyler Perry
Arch. Then you can install pretty much any window manager.
Matthew Rogers
I use Xubuntu on my 8 yo laptop, it just works
Owen Cruz
what the fuck? I used to have the same laptop until it got stolen. ;_; all of precious photos and games are lost forever

OP HERE. UPDATE:
I've burned the .iso for Lubuntu 16.04 on a 2gb flashdrive and the screen keeps on flickering on the loading screen after I choose "install" but before the setup. What do?

debian on xfce or lxde? If it doesn't work on debian it may not work on anything else.

Check the lubuntu tech support forum.

XFCE. It works but its not as fast as my parents want it to be
Ayden Brooks
This (with the exception of running Gnome) upgrade the RAM to 2x2 GB, you can get it from AliExpress or eBay for like 10 bucks You might want to upgrade the CPU too, you can get the TOTL for those machines for like 5 bucks Cleaning the heatsink and changing thermal paste is a must It might struggle with Facebook depending on how much your parents use FB, tbqh it's way easier and not much more expensive to get a new chinkshit tablet unless you're in Brazil
Julian Collins
just dug up my Aspire 4925 and this thread comes up. Forgot how dogshit laptop design was back then.

Hunter Lewis
Do this. Puppy is about as light as it gets. I miss the ol' pupper sometimes.
Tyler Bailey
You could give antiX a try, it's intended to be able to run on old computers. I've gotten pretty decent results with even antiX-full on old hardware before.
Kayden Anderson
Install gentoo

Xubuntu.
>I'm thinking of installing a lightweight version of XP now. What do you think? WinXP will lack of support for modern browsers.
Bizarrely I was also installing Debian 9 on an Aspire 5535 today, took me three attempts due to overheating, what a piece of shit.
Thomas Rogers
oh fuck, not the overheating, forgot about that.
Liam Gutierrez
Install XP (debloat it) with patched chrome and you're good to go.
Jacob Watson
>people say it's a good OS for illiterates That's because it's the only one they're familiar with and will bother to learn. I give credit to Microsoft tho, security has improved massively since XP.
Xavier Russell
The design was great, very durable. As for overheating, fucking clean your vent and change your paste. Been running a 5315 with C2D for 11 years without issue.
Aiden Smith
>debloat xp how and for what purpose? also >2018 >xp
Thomas Reed
either Elementary OS if you wanna limit them breaking it, or Bodhi if it's extra-potato (not a horrible spec for either distro, mind you). avoid neckbeard recommendations like a Puppy flavor, Mom and Dad don't need to run a distro that's set to Root by default. If you go with Bodhi, get the Standard install, as the App Pack version is a bit more bloated, with unnecessary shit, and Standard comes with Midori, and can boot on a fucking Pentium II with 128mb of ram. If they insist on Winblows, get them XP Black - keyless, still updates and supports Windows Defender, Skype, Firefox and a few other things.
Adam Hall
fuck
Xavier Powell
xubuntu or lubuntu. They are built to work on systems with 2gigs of ram. Which you can get more of for 50 cents at a pawn shop or dumpster. XP is not secure and kind of bad looking back on it.
I say this assuming you just want something no fuss.
>11 years old I was assuming windows 95, maybe xp Time fucken flies lad! :(
Anyway, to answer to OP, I'd install either debian if you want it easy, or gentoo if you want to make the most of it. In this case, arch is out, because it's 64bits only
John Smith
I'm pretty sure it's a 64-bit capable system, I have a lower-end Acer of the same vintage that is.
Liam Martinez
SO? Kill yourself third worlder
Connor Ross
>facebook and wysiwyg word processing
wont run regardless of how lightweight of a linux distro you install on it
Lincoln Murphy
I had an acer aspire 5520 and could not get any fucking distro of linux to work on it. Good luck OP.
Cooper Perez
My mother use to have this exact laptop, it was such a piece of shit that it could barely browse five years ago, I pity the fucker who attempts to make this thing run able let alone usable.
John Thompson
Over 20 years and yet still only a handful of manufacturers have realized built-in webcams are either trivial or completely optional.
Still, it's probably the only manufacturer this year that seems to actually acknowledge the futility of built-in webcams. Nobody seems to want to use what we have in smartphones and a laptop's display can only be so large, so why even bother ruining that shit with a webcam? I'm pretty sure a lot of people would be willing to sacrifice a shitty 720p camera for the extra screen real estate.
Consider xfce, mate, or even KDE, assuming that it ran vista well enough, it should be able to handle the bloat of a full de. If you were leaning towards xp, xfce is most like it. If your parents don't know or want to keep track of updates, Debian stable, centos, or possibly opensuse leap would be good options. Short support cycles are the bane of most Linux distros for old fogies, so I wouldn't consider using anything more "up to date" than the last Ubuntu LTS, assuming youre willing to net install and select anything other than GNOME. (I have a 2008 c2d laptop that runs guhnome well enough, but cropping pictures with gthumb consistently causes it to run out of memory and crash, and I don't think your parents would want to futz with its UI)
I can't honestly reccomend lxde as to many features are lacking or broken, but lxle is a spectacular distro for it, which you should use over lubuntu. Antix is fine for xfce, but in my subjective experience MX Linux would be better.
If you want your parents to suffer, try reactos. Who knows, it just might work.
Landon Roberts
i had a 5920g which cost me like 1000 bucks in '07. worst piece of junk i ever owned. graphics card failed twice, overheating and other shit. never gonna buy acer due to this ever again..
Elijah Gonzalez
OP you still here?
Literally installed Linux on mine.. just using openbox as a wm and using midori as a browser. Does basic basic stuff. 512MB RAM. Extremely unusable if you're not someone who can just figure out how to slowly download some mp4 file on it and watch it.. because that's all it seems to be good for is watching movies and listening to music and basic office work. Web browsing is fucked..
