I'm afraid he was right and that this sentiment is growing in popularity.

I read his manifesto last summer and its stuck with me ever since. Any significant amount of time with technology now leaves me [moreso] feeling anxious and empty.

This tonsky.me/blog/disenchantment/ was posted yesterday here, I think. Really sums up my thoughts of the last two or three years.

I still like technology, but the current state of computers makes me sad.

Yes, I think he had a point, and I agree more when I have to wade through angular front-end shit.

I too recommend that. When the bullshit just smells to bad, pack up and move on. Or become a NEET like I did.

Brainlet here what's the tl;dr of his manifesto? Bomb people you disagree with?

This is why I've been putting it off. I don't want my world to come crashing down and have to live innawoods.

Technology is enslaving mankind.

Is that it? You can reach the same conclusion by looking at a bunch of millennials glued to their phone.

Read, faggot.

Yeah but he reached that conclusion before seeing any millennials.

even if he's not right it's pretty entertaining science fiction

yeah, same here. though for me it also just reflects the kind of stuff being done. Like, even if Javascript wasn't such a giant shithole, web dev is and would be boring. Same with most business stuff. You aren't doing anything that hasn't been done a million times before, it's just the latest variant of "put some shit in a database, query some shit from the database, put it on the screen in a way that shuts up those graphic-design retards". In the open-source world its an endless parade of meme-of-the-day languages, and then reimplementing some stuff in the meme-of-the-day language, then getting bored with it and someone comes up with a new meme-of-the-day language.

I started programming thinking it'd be a great way to do new and interesting things only to find out that most programmers spend most of their time doing the exact opposite, trying desperately to abstract away anything that's interesting so they can focus on doing the same shit over and over and over again.

people forget that like a big chunk of his manifesto isn't about turning back the industrial revolution but realizing the same principles will be used to manipulate the human genome
imo it's the most interesting and plausible part of his writing

>We’re stuck in local optima and nobody wants to move out.
That was a good read. Another user posted this video in a different thread today, also highly related to programming bloat and the total lack of care for making things actually reliable and efficient: youtube.com/watch?v=kZRE7HIO3vk

It is... sad? Annoying? Maybe just disappointing, to see how horrifically programmed so many things are. Snapchat now takes up hundreds of megabytes and runs (and has run for a while) like absolute dogshit. Why does Gmail, or Google Keep, or their calendar or the youtube website run like pure trash? What the fuck happened?

I can tell you one thing: at least *some* of the bloat in any of these programs is from spying on users, whether for "innocent" advertising or straight up alphabet agency tracking.

Attached: 1521873686389.jpg (468x510, 60K)

>What the fuck happened?
The devs don't care, basically. It's easier and faster to not care. Move fast and break things, brah. Or, related, the devs all have fast machines with SSDs and gigabit internet, so they make the quickest, dirtiest thing they can and say "Hm. Seems like that's good enough! Great, onto the next thing!"

Basically its all rooted in the fact that devs are very novelty-seeking and dislike having to slow down. The programmer has to go slow if the program is to go fast, and that's hard, boring work from the programmer's perspective. Why bother when you can just depend on some shit in npm?

it's pretty easy to avoid user. do some survival courses and learn to be independent for society. there are also many self sufficient communities without technology, try joining one.

fuck this article is disheartening, yet it's terrifyingly real. This is why I work my ass off to be good at what I do, though- I don't want to just sit back and let this shit happen.

What are you talking about, OP? I love programming.

sometimes i think yes

also, would it be ethical to wage war on microsoft/apple/google/amazon and companies that spy on people and promote proprietary software?

Some programmers love to optimize but are forced by management to move on to the next project.

makes me wonder if people would care if automobile engineers didn't try to make things efficient

They don't, really, cars aren't actually very aerodynamic, though they're more so than they used to be. Some guy took his stock Honda Civic (a '93 or something that got like 35mpg) and stuck some aerodynamic fairings on it (covered the wheels, a pointy-bubble kind of front end and back end, I believe some other stuff) and got something like 95mpg out of it, without toughing the engine as I recall. Part of that was also driving like an old lady, of course, but cars could be a lot more efficient than they are. Its just that very few people buy cars based on efficiency, hence the popularity of SUVs. Gas costs what it costs and if it costs more people open their wallets instead of buying a more efficient car.

Well, in burgerland at least. I'm told yuros are somewhat more conscious of this, though even they won't accept really highly aerodynamic styling.

> I'm told yuros are somewhat more conscious of this
Tell that to the Germany car companies that like to cheat carbon emission tests.

This article sucks cock written by some beta male whining about inefficiency when functionality is more important. Tell him to suck a cock.

Ted Kaczynski performed all of his attacked before millennials even existed.
Foresight is a curse.

Literally 2.5 times faster by sticking some fairings on a shitbox? Wtf is this magic

>emission tests
Well, that is why nobody can have nice things, not even the Europeans. With internal combustion engines these days, it's:
>performance, efficiency, emissions. You may choose ONE.
That's because further reducing stuff like NOx emissions requires modifications that make the engine less efficient.

If I remember right most modern cars have a coefficient of drag between .25 and .3 or so. You could reduce that by a lot but a car that looks aerodymaically optimal won't sell no matter how good the mileage is - pic related.

in the "simple modification nets noticeable improvement" sense, the principle is the same as those "trailer tail" things you sometimes see on semis. Yeah you can only do so much without changing the basic structure of the vehicle, but you can do more than you'd think.

ethics are a spook

same, except I continue to spend all day in front of a computer so I feel like shit all the time.

I think the way we use technology has left us worse off. One thing I think about alot is animals don't have technology and you don't see them killing themselves.

If you read it he pretty much predicted our modern society exactly as it is. This is before we all had smart phones and faggots larping as woman. The fact he saw it all coming and documented it is pretty impresive

>Technology is enslaving mankind.
I can see how this is bad but don't you think it's hypocritical for Jow Forums to lament over this?
You guys like to talk the talk about privacy and freedom, and yet all these phone, wallpaper and software recommendation threads only shows the true nature of Jow Forums.

Not just smartphones, it was before PCs and internet existed. I'm pretty sure he formed his philosophy in early 70s. And the worst part is than he predicted than end of industrial society will be the end of humanity or really hard time for humanity which sounds scary and more real with every new day.

We need final solution to the pajeet question

Why do you think they cheated the tests in the first place

You didn't understand his manifesto if you think it is exclusively speaking about computers and post-90s technology, he's suggesting that any artificial power process is essentially pointless, be that literature, science, programming, art etc. and a return to true power process (pretty much pre-agricultural society would be best)

Not that I necessarily disagree with him, I just wanted to clarify as this thread seemed a little confused.

I came here to write a shorter version of this. Basically,
> Expectation [especially during college years]: I will use software to solve unsolved problems.
> Reality: Let's build a MVC app!

He wasn't the only one.
youtube.com/watch?v=fiaWsgtJrNI&t=15s

"Nothing human makes it out of the 21st century."

>most modern cars have a coefficient of drag between .25 and .3 or so
.25 and .4, you gotta consider the fact SUVs are becoming a thing again for some reason.

Basically
>technology has created a situation where we are now no longer in control of fundamental aspects of our life, such as catching and killing our own food, for which we are hardwired
>this has created a social illness known as Leftism, wherein this desire to be in control of one's existence perversely gets attached to the state, due to people becoming 'oversocialised' (i.e. can't do anything for themselves anymore, now depend on the state)
>in a blind effort to take control of their own existence, these people 'rebel' by taking on artificial causes such as POC rights or whatever, and actually push for MORE state involvement
>Because this is basically mental illness, it won't stop, they'll keep pushing for more and more until humanity literally can't do shit for itself and loses all connection to nature
>Only solution to this is to collapse industrial society

Been a long time since I read Uncle Ted, but this is basically it.

He admits himself that he has no idea how you would prevent humans from just building back up an industrialised society though, some aspects of it aren't well developed

Very interesting read though. I remember being pissed when the bugmen on Last Podcast On The Left did a complete hatchet job on him

Read nigga read

Best diagnosis of the leftist mindset you'll find anywhere

I got into programming because I liked computers and building cool stuff. I enjoy msdos and retroshit. ThenI entered my CS school, filled with discord™ zoomers building electron apps etc. I think I would have loved programming in the 1980s. Programming in 2018 is so abstract and disconnected from the reality of transistors and 0 and 1s that I don't understand what I'm doing

I feel rushed every day. Always wanting new builds, new features implemented. I want to make it good. I want to make the architecture of the code worthwhile and maintainable. Nobody cares. No one. Not the managers. Not the clients. Why should they? From their point of view, if I say, we can make this a lot better under the hood, might be perceptibly faster (but maybe not), will be much easier to maintain and add features in the future, they just end up saying "no i don't want to pay for that".

it is all about money. Nobody wants to pay for me to make anything good. They want basic functionality. Then they're happy.

I hate doing this.

>and yet all these phone, wallpaper and software recommendation threads only shows the true nature of Jow Forums
I choose to believe that these are the other boards coming here to talk about stupid shit because they can’t be bothered to read the sticky.

I hate trying to do web development today. Everyone is using some fucked up framework, that implements 500 different abstractions with stupid names. No documentation on how any of it actually works. Things break and you have no idea why.

It's hell.

I never enjoyed programming, I just needed a fucking job. I am as suited as you can get to be a programmer. Autistic, can concentrate for hours. I am a very good programmer. The job is just fucking bullshit.

Humans aren't meant to sit down staring at a screen indoors all day having to always engage your intellectual brain as you weave through a bunch of code.

Working at pizza hut was better than this job. At least you can switch your fucking mind off so it doesn't burn out within months. Also you get micromanaged more after graduating and getting a "profession" then you do at mcdonalds, pizza hut, or any other job. It is literally engrained in tools like JIRA.

I came to a similar conclusion as him before I ever read any of his works. It all stemmed from this month-long "outdoor education" camp that my school had. It has been to this day (I am in my 30s) the only month I have ever lived in my life. The rest has been this zombie state of modern life. I could feel in the weeks after I finished the camp, my mind returning to this anxious kind of state. It was the strangest shit ever being free from this matrix.

Are you me

Read Ellul, TedK just ripped him off and made the message violent

Technology and humanity cannot be reconciled. It can only be one or the other and we will have to choose in the very near future which one it will be.

Eh, this idea of adhering to nature has existed in most civilisations. Ancient egyptian artifacts make mention of it all over the place. At some point though, the endless march of competition led us to completely abandon our relationship to nature.
