Hard Drive Porn

I cant help it, please help quench my addiction for seeing raw HDD's still in their static wrapper. Recently bought a bunch and cant help but just look at them :)

Why is it so satisfying?

I guess you don't really care about the data right?

Give a all new meaning to the word "bit banging"

Nooo! :(

Not my pics, i bought 8 HGST 6TB's. Just stealing them from reddit. Although WD is really not that bad in reliability, blackblaze data.

>that much storage without a RAID 5 or 10 array

>Recently bought a bunch
All of these are for your own use? Not bad.

>Why is it so satisfying?
It's a nice useful piece of high tech that will contain information. Which is also much of the same reason why people like books I guess.

>I guess you don't really care about the data right?
As if brand whoring mattered, you just need redundancy.

Nah Raid 6 or RAID-Z3 all the way bae.

I'd suggest RAID6 or scale-out storage like on MooseFS or Ceph.

RAID10 is usually pretty inefficient.

Why do you need 200TB

Why don't you need 200TB?

But really movies, tv shows, digital media..... *cough cough* who knows?

It's only 50TB usable(RAID6), and it's for a business.

>movies, tv shows
Biggest waste of space ever. Why is it that people with large storage arrays always have the most uninteresting data collections. It's either raw recordings for their youtube shit or pirated shows/movies which can be found literally anywhere

Attached: a3uLpPM.jpg (2988x5312, 946K)

Well what do you store? If I find something actually useful, then I would of course download that, but I've only been doing this for a few years so all I can fill it with is movies, sometimes data dumps for neural networks but they take 1TB max.

The actual external design is kinda gay IMO. Of course having those is nice.

>which can be found literally anywhere
But you know, isn't this mainly true because many allocated storage and bw to them? If they did not, these things would become rare(er).

It's maybe not even enough storage to preserve things like pixiv or deviantart or whatever if they go down, main remaining source would probably what's in archive.org. Youtube... no one has that in full, right?

nice big disks

What you talkin about? Its 1000x sexier than 2 or 4 years ago, and even some modern consumer designs. Flat front with big stickers are sexy af.

I always get excited seeing hard drives, especially clear, high-res pictures

maybe it's the thought of being able to fill it up with goodies

there's nothing I hate more than seeing ppl with barely filled drives. like 70 GB out of a 1 TB drive for example.

Attached: s-l1600_cropped.jpg (1149x863, 115K)

eh, they haven't changed much since they shrunk to 3.5"

Definitly. Buying new HDD's is one of the things that makes me the happiest. New car, or a petabyte of storage? ill take the latter.

house fire cooling config

SSD will replace hard drives on most consumers products, it's only a matter of time. Soon enough buying a hard drive would be like trying to buy a diskette today

I don't know what it is about these Helium filled HGST/WD drives, they have this very nice industrial look to them.

*blocks your path*

Had to downsize my anime collection to fit on my measly 13TB.
But 4TB+ drives make me nervous. I mean so many moving parts, so many things to go wrong...

Have you considered a server user? and running it with RAID in case one of your mechanical bits dies?

I actually do run a server. But it's an old MacPro 1.1 I got from the trash, running game servers for my co-workers and what-not.
Eventually I assume ill move to a media server, but still, larger capacity drives dont fill me with confidence.

Attached: MacProServer.jpg (801x634, 111K)

Anyone never had a HDD fails on them? I still have one Maxtor(the one with worse reputation than seagate) from 2006!

Got 3 in my NAS. Love them.

t. not shill

The only reason to use Seagate drives is if you need SATA I compatibility.

My cunt has no access to Enterprise or HGST drives, which ones should I use instead?

Do I go for WD or Seagate?

>Do I go for WD or Seagate?
WD obviously.

Even though WD owns HGST.
HGST > WD >>>>>> Shitgate

The only reason to use WD is if your an actual brainlet/underage

THAT ENTIRE BOX OF 10TB DRIVES = 5 MINUTES OF 8K 120FPS 360 DEGREE 3D SBS VR PORN

What color for storage drives?

shit

So why do you guys need more hard drives than an entire police cyber forensics department?

No u

no

nig/g/er

animated cheese pizza most likely

>want to get into storage and data hoarding
>all hard drives eventually fail, all data eventually degrades. All in the matter of years.

Why bother?

What's wrong with WD Red? They are quality drives.

>RAID 5
That won't save you user. All you need is a single URE during rebuilding of your RAID array and you're fucked. Either that or a second disk failure, since they tend to fail in batches.

This. Use ZFS in RAIDz2 or RAIDz3 if you care about data.

RAID6 on disks that big is asking for a failure to happen during a rebuild, man

>all data eventually degrades.
That's the point. People here probably don't care too much about the drives themselves, but about the systems they can put in place with these drives so that they can preserve data that could otherwise be lost.

I understand, user, you might be autistic but I can relate to it.
