Generally people who don't have a good sense for how to handle money, so they have no problem financing it for the $85/month or whatever it comes out to.

If they just bought a $300 phone, they'd have $1200 left over which is enough to take a nice vacation or road trip somewhere cool, or upgrade their gaymen PC, or any number of things, but often the iPhone is a serious status symbol for people of certain backgrounds.

I once went on a date with a girl, and she said "honestly I judge anyone that doesn't use an iPhone". I tried to understand her line of reasoning, but she herself didn't understand why she thought different of non-iPhone users, she just knew that she felt that way.
After talking to her some more, it became clear that she was from a low-socioeconomic background, and an iPhone was a symbol of "status" to her. If you were walking around with new Apple products, you were a league above everyone else in that world.

To middle class and above people, they don't really care about phones/laptops/whatever because a new iPhone is like 2% of your annual income. People in those zones flex their worth with expensive cars, designer clothes, and fancy apartments.
