Scenario: You have 64 GB of portable storage and you're moving to a place without Internet access. You are going to be there for 10 years minimum. There is no television or radio. The only device you have is an ultralight laptop and you want to reserve every byte of free disk space on the internal hard drive for saving your files. What do you download to the portable storage?

A few words of warning: Every byte counts. You're going to want to pick things that have lots of entertainment with replay value. Arcade games are going to be better choices than linear games with limited replay value. Something like Spelunky with random generated levels. Any game where you can keep playing to beat your score. Or maybe you do the linear game and speed-run it. It's your choice but choose it well.

You might want to keep it to just a few movies that you like to watch every year as tradition. Maybe a Christmas movie to get into the holiday spirit but no more. That's room you lose for games, music, or porn.

Have you considered some hobbies like downloading a music tracker, 3D modelling package (you will likely only be able to do low poly stuff), bitmap graphics editor, etc.?

Books (fiction) might not be comfortable to read for long periods of time, but maybe a few textbooks to learn something. Maybe a rule book for playing card games.

Am I alone at the new place?

Yeah, I thought about saying that. Not sure why I didn't add it.

>sd card dies after 2 years like they always do
FUCK

Shit, it's pretty hard then
I'm actually gonna plan this microSD for real

Would it die from just reading? In this hypothetical situation, it lasts the entire ten years flawlessly.

mGBA, 100 GBA ROMs, and then I'll fill the rest with completely translated manga scans.
If I'm going somewhere with people, maybe a few books to learn their language.
If there are no people, I'll include books on how to draw. If I'm allowed additional hardware, a drawing tablet, replacement stylus and tips, and something like Clip Studio Paint or Krita on the SD card.

>not creating your OS during those 10 years
cringe

>sd card dies after 2 years like they always do
>own a fucking 16gb sd card for 4years !!!!
are you retarded ??

10GB of lossy music covers ~100 albums worth. Even a few GB would allow a massive supply of ebooks. Another 10GB would be the sum of most your No-Intro cartridge game sets plus emulators. The remaining space can fit in plenty of YIFY-shit quality movies.

>I'm actually gonna plan this microSD for real
Please do. I'd **love** to see what you come up with. The more detailed the better, but anything will be appreciated. I'd love to see what games you pick, movies (if any), music, books, software, etc.

/bin/tar

What's the average size of a GBA ROM? Are they comparable to SNES or smaller?

Yes, you're allowed extra hardware like a drawing tablet.

Basic Gentoo, the texmacs version of sicp, Emacs and a scheme interpeter.

Sell the belongings, buy good rope, move to a place without any people.

Attached: 1525464839530.png (1600x900, 207K)

I'm not him, but on my PC I have a zip with 165 GBA roms and it takes up 688MB.

>whole 2 years
'mirin

I'd go buy a hard drive because I'm not poor

I wouldn't sweat it. Civilizations have survived for thousands of years without computers or even books.
If you need digital entertainment to survive you were cucked from the get go.

If you are going to be in the middle of nowhere for 10 years you're also cucked from life. So you might as well fill it up senpai.

Damn, that sounds like a sweet deal.

I think No-Intro's set is like 12-13GB. The biggest one I have on my phone is 32MB, but most are 8 or 16MB. Compressed they become smaller. My 100 ROM collection will probably ended up at 1.5GB in total.

A copy of gzdoom, gzdoombuilder, Slade, and oblige with the standard doom wads as well.
A c compiler, some complete reference for c, and vim
A graphics editor like gimp, and a DAW like Fl Studio
Fill the rest if the space with books

Are we allowed compression?

Use state of the art lossy encoding.
Opus 128 for audio
and .... for video

All NES games are 72 MB.

the king james bible in .txt format

Good luck renting without income.

Yup, but please state what kind and settings, if possible. It would be interesting to know.

I bought a 8gb sd card 10 years ago and It's still working wtf.

I don't think you understood.

Lots of text only ebooks and an ai that simulates Jow Forums.

What brand of microsd ya gonna choose?(hypothetically I know)
My sandisk works fine, but I heard a lot ppl having problems with them.
I'd propably choose sam or king

Portable krita probably ur best call. Dunno why you would want a drawing book though, it's not like it's that complicated. In fact if you read one now you'll have ten years of just practicing.

This is pretty hard. I would put mainly movies and mp3(pretty condensed format). I figure 25 movies in 720p is more than enough for ten years

I'd download a shitton of technical books about various subjects, development tools and the GTA games up to GTA San Andreas. Maybe also the Scarface and the Harry Potter movies. Maybe the psx games too. Maybe Falcon BMS.
Should be enough to last me for a few decades.

Here's my list of movies. I probably can't think of 30 good movies so I'd fill the rest with high level textbooks/occult tomes and maybe think my way off the island eventually.

No country for old Men
Nosferatu, phantom der nacht (German version is better, and could learn German from it)
Inherent vice
The imaginarium of Dr pernassus
Pretty Persuasion (when I'm lonely)
Models (for when I want to hate humanity as a coping mechanism)
Alien?

Also a PS1 and a nes emulator would be good, get to play all those old RPGs I don't have time for.

blender
a double dozen of my favorite albums in 192kbps quality
compilers for all the languages i know, and ones i would like to learn
instructional texts for all of those languages
a fuckload of books
a fuckload of guides from /out/ and /diy/
a fuckload of emulated games
a fuckload of archived web 1.0 sites?
maps of the world

This is a problem. It's so easy to say "I want a fuckload of this and fuckload of that." You can fit a lot in 64gb.

Really? I find it pretty limiting, but I like your outlook. Is there a downloadable archive of the early web? That would be interesting. I know there's a geocities archive out there somewhere, but, ya know, geocities.

Some great movies in that list. I definitely think I could watch Alien once a year.

Probably SanDisk. You can get a 64 GB for like $10 on sale, $15 year round.

the first 3 seasons of king of the hill and an inefficiently large collection of lesbian anal porn

supreme taste

~12GB of fiction epubs, ~51GB of music transcoded to opus 96kbps, 1GB of SNES & GEN/MD games and mame w/ CPS SF2.
Obviously I wouldn't get exactly 64GB so reduce each proportionately to fit the SD card

I was just going with me needing to fill the card now and the only things I can do is either fill the card or find things to fill said card with. I've also never really drawn before, but it's something I would totally want to learn in a situation like this.
As long as my needs are being covered and I don't have to work, I'd want to make artsy things. Write stories, draw pictures, make music, etc. I feel like a book or two could jump start me and in 10 years I'd at least be competent.

Fuck you for asking such a good question! The more I think about it the more complex it gets.

You just need to shift your perspective back a couple decades. You can fit thousands upon thousands of books in a couple GB. Which books are you going to choose? To some extent it doesn't matter, just get a fuckload.

Entertainment is a waste of space when the space is tight. Entertain yourself with a ball or something. The whole point is to save everything you might possibly want from the internet, because that's the one thing you won't have.

Be the man from the past who had a 64mb hard drive. Imagine all that he dreamed of, and multiply it by 1000.

>The whole point is to save everything you might possibly want from the internet
But I don't want to save anything from the net, other than pirate material that existed before the net did.

This is a great opportunity to force yourself into bettering yourself. If you pack games, you will waste your time and come out of those 10 years even worse. Fill that with textbooks and seminal works in mathematics, philosophy, art history, computer science, and history.

Include a references for a language and documentation of it's standard library, as well as a linker and compiler.

If you have the space, as much of the Wikipedia database as you can fit, so you can peruse articles and add some breadth to your studies.

You will come out a much more developed and mature person. Don't include a single game.

You'll probably end up making your own games then

my well abused kingston cards from ~2006 I used for DS piracy are still fine

>or porn.
what are magazines

I would compress my 8tb of pornography and movies into 63.9gb, and use the remaining space for the source code to downloadmoreram.com. Then I could uncompress my files.

>Every byte counts. You're going to want to pick things that have lots of entertainment with replay value.
I was playing around with maximizing H.264 compression a couple of years ago, and got the anime episode I was testing with down to ~32 MB with (noticeably reduced but) perfectly watchable quality. That's ~2000 episodes on 64 GB, or over 80 series, for 8 unique series per year if I'm away for 10 years.
These days with HEVC and Opus, I wouldn't be surprise if I could halve the storage requirements once more. I see no problems with fitting everything I could possibly need on 64 GB.

Pic related, it's a representative frame.

Some video games are ok. People have been playing games for thousands of years. Games get you thinking. The issue with video games is that some of them are dumbed down enough to do the opposite.

Fair enough, but how does one create a good collection? Personally, I'd prefer a magazine but there's no way in hell I'm going to buy them in stores. Sorry, ain't happening in a million years.

>not having any on the first place
underage detected

>underage
Not him, but I'm halfway to boomer and I haven't owned a single porn magazine in my life.

This is great. Resolution is a meme, just like large screens. Really, if I want to watch a movie, I'd prefer to watch it on a 19" hotel crt instead of a 40" lcd. It's more comfy, more spontaneous, and more emotionally connective.

hd video was a mistake.

it doenst have to be an explicit porn, just women in swimsuits faggot

Haven't owned any of those either.

>I just give me 100% 0.5fps anime.
Come on dude...

This is the only type of porn magazine a man needs.

Attached: road_and_track_magazine.jpg (249x300, 23K)

I'm 32 and have owned like 8-10 or thereabouts. I haven't had any in my possession in over 10 years. I wouldn't mind a few graphic novel-quality porn mags. Do they exist?

Roms, 16bit and earlier. Cheese Pizza, just the real hard stuff to last 10 years. Audio books, encoded in dial up era RealMedia. Office, programming and image editing software- lightweight stuff like Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9. Books on electrical engineering and programing.

Wikipedia

It's actually still better than the original encoding I downloaded in 2003, while being only a third of the size. If you grew up with VHS rips that were transcoded to XVID and shrunk to fit on a Usenet upload, this is positively stellar quality.
>0.5fps
It's full framerate, faget.

Oops, meant for , not .

>all these brainlets that don't already own thousands of printed doujins
Laffin at you

The ebook one doesnt weight that much, actually I suggest the norton edition that has study guides and apocrypha and other texts, pretty good stuff.

Hard cheese pizza has less moisture and is more likely to keep for ten years.

I'm using a 2 GB card that's at least 7 years old.

10 gb of porn

I've been shooting slrs for what 8 years now? I've had one card issue, a 16gb SanDisk that fails in Sub zero temps. Everything still works, prolly use a dozen 32gb and 64gb high speeds now but I still use those 16gb sandisks in personal shots on my single SD card cams

All of these posts about gigabytes of porn...
I would take one hundred of the best, most crisp images of my waifu.

Opus 96kbps music
Old games for emulators
360P(if screen res is 1080P, 240P if 720P) reencodes of animes with 96kbps opus
Some good pc games from 90s-10's, but stripped of intros, and possiblly music+cutscenes/prerendered videos and reduced in size textures and with special configs so it runs on this machine, dialogues and sfx left be or reencoded when possible.
Some wholesome doujins saved as libaom-av1 / hevc / vp9 to save space
FFmpeg and kdenlive for my creation needs.
Books on survival
Books on creating electricity in a wild/in prypec/chernobyl/north korea idk where that could be
Random text snippets of ffmpeg wiki and QA from superuser/video editting
All of it compressed to a .tar.lzma archive

I'd take
-those PDF about general relativity / quantum physics that goes from undergrad to master's level. I always leaf through them but never actually read them through
-SICP and I'll do and redo the exercises as a hobby
-maybe the tanenbaum book on OS and do a /Terry Davis/ tier journey
-lots of porn in SD, some HD pictures
-maybe a Pokemon ROM or GTA San Andreas or some comfy game that takes a while to finish.

Possibly an squashfs instead of an archive since you cannot use up all the space with a tar archive without having to trim it.
But it can prove lesd convient to add new content into the squashfs

CP

after all, nobody would know.

hes getting out this year wonder whats the first thing he is going to do

fap to cp

The Satanic Bible.

What OS is on the laptop?
Do the OS and install package count towards the 64 GB?
Does the laptop have the disk drive space to decompress shit to?
Do I have the time to compress the data I am going to place on the MicroSD card? With ZPAQ (mattmahoney.net/dc/zpaq.html) you can stuff a lot of data in 64 GB.

Attached: zpaq 10gb.png (651x396, 54K)

>might not be comfortable to read for long periods of time
Maybe if your laptop is shit. Besides, you can get a speech synthesizer.

>Is there a downloadable archive of the early web?
There is web.archive.org and wget.

>more comfy, more spontaneous, and more emotionally connective
You must like vinyl.

>graphic novel-quality porn mags
Alan Moore did one.

I've never used vinyl. I'm a '95 boomer and I grew up with vhs and cassettes.

>encoded in dial up era RealMedia
Absurd to choose this over Opus/HE-AACю

See, you didn't spend enough time with them to get sick of them (or low-quality media in general).

The Japanese have shit tons of hentai manga, both independent and professional. There is lots of Western stuff too, but most of it's digital now.

Attached: ZaZNr2F.jpg (450x600, 30K)

If I’m really going to be alone in a possibily unwelcoming environment then fuck media and games , I’m filling it with survival guides, data on every plant and animal in the area and maps.

If I have some space left then I might add books as they have a better time to space ratio.

Then leave 1 gig free for keeping a journal and notes.

Note how OP has not mentioned a MicroSD reader.
