Black electrical tape works great on my Thinkpad X230. The body is the same color so you can't even notice it from a distance.

Protip: put a small piece of tape on the opposite side of the tape to keep the lens from smudging from the glue. It'll stay crystal clear in case you need it at some point.

It's a much better idea to disable your microphone and webcam from the bios until you actually need them. No matter how careful you are, glue is glue and it's going to make your webcam's image look worse than it should.

My operating system uses FOSS drivers for the webcam, I do not have this problem.

Just use BSD, it won't have drivers for your webcam.
