4 + 6 / 2 is equivalent to 4 + (6 / 2), not (4 + 6) / 2 as you seem to be thinking. Division has a higher order of preference.

There's a reason we don't like to express same line division, it's to prevent confusing situations like this, especially when dealing with large equations. It really doesn't even make sense to set it up in the way it was written

Using a slash instead of the retarded division symbol gets rid of some of the ambiguity. There's a reason the division symbol stopped being used when one starts taking algebra in school.

You may not have noticed it but that division symbol practically disappeared partway through your basic education. Everyone knew it's retarded to express division that way.

Having to do that is more of a limitation because of how people tend to write programs. Either you know how a language processes same line division (some follow the kindergarten rule, others do a dumb left-to-right operation) or use a copious amount of parentheses to remove any ambiguity. Serious math avoids same line division at all costs if they're not using RPN.

Visually speaking, the traditional division symbol looks like it's on the same level of hierarchy as addition and subtraction. A narrower slash symbol gives a visual cue that the division should be done first before the addition and subtraction.
