The only purpose for consumer grade graphics cards at the moment is for muh games. It's the only market that can be convinced to drop hundreds of their dollars on this kind of gear. FFS my MacBook from 10 years ago can drive dual displays at 1080 without breaking a sweat.

And why not? When you can spin up a instance with a TB of RAM and insane amounts of CPU for a few bucks for that one workload, why spend on building a monster box in your basement? It doesn't make sense. Have a highly parallelisable task? Spin up a few dozen boxes on the same LAN.

The only downside is latency, and that's a problem for gaming.
