>What is this? An attempt to concentrate discussion about "alternative" operating systems, aka OSes which are only sporadically discussed or have too few users to keep their own threads alive. >Why do this? Because I think it would be an interesting thread to have around in the board, prompting users to poke around, experiment and to exchange ideas and knowledge about this often sidelined software.
Questions for anyone interested: Are you running any of theses systems? If so which ones? real hardware or VMs? Should the BSD family be included in a posterior thread if this idea proves to be successful?
Ideas and suggestions regarding the content of the OP are welcomed too!
Tried all of them. 9front is great for programming. It will reign supreme if someone ported a modern web browser. Genode has some interesting concepts but freeze-prone and still in early stages. (Also see Hurd and HelenOS.) Haiku is usable as daily driver. Kolibri/Menuet are interesting in that are written in pure asm. ReactOS should have been of higher importance but right now is worst than Windows 2K. Redox is the OS of the future (microkernel-based written in safe lang with no bloat on it). That or Fuchsia. Shrine will be nice if they make it in a hosted system to be used as programming environment. (Also see Oberon and AROS.) And MINIX3 could replace Linux.
Hudson Wood
Thanks for the thread. Looks really interesting. I'll try some of them.
Go fuck yourself troll ass OP, those projects are all shit.
Luis Carter
>he hasn't grown up from the 'curious about alternative OSes' phase Don't worry m8 it gets better.
Colton Murphy
How active is Shrine?
Luke Hill
>Not using YZY
Michael Wright
I wish we still lived in a world were many of these OSs could be useful. But sadly we don't. Hardware is too varied and uses too complex and numerous for them to ever catch on.
Mason Torres
boohoohoo tripfag is jelly he didnt make the thread

All these meme operating systems and no mention of OS/2? Trash thread.

ReactOS has a pretty good amount of development these days ever since the Russian government started investing in it.
Mason White
>■ 9Front will it run nodejs, visual studio code and firefox/chromium?
Blake Cooper
No, 9front doesn't run shit software.
Connor Mitchell
damn, how am i supposed to run my javascript scripts in cron then?
Ethan Peterson
Don't forget Open Indiana (OpenSolaris fork)
Josiah Ward
i come back after all these years and this faggot is still here
Angel Allen
When it comes to OS's, Linux and ReactOS are the 2 priorities for the Russian government because of the sanctions, import substitution, backdoors and all that stuff. An OS to keep an eye on.
Jaxson Reed
>t. jelly and butthurt neet who hasn't contributed anything of value to society nor to the internet since birth You might as well gas yourself now while the gas is still cheap.
Lol this, I just wanted to come back to see the coc shitstorm
Michael Gray
That's funny, why ReactOS? are they trying to reduce spending using a free OS that looks like windows instead of paying for windows licenses?
Xavier Martinez
Windows is no longer used in the government because of privacy concerns, I can’t really blame them for being interested since most people can work with it technically inclined or not.
Luke Morris
they're trying to avoid the US backdoors in windows
William Richardson
comfy
Luis Wright
You are obviously not keeping up with the news related to geo-politics and the super friendly relation between Western governments and Western big software and hardware companies...
Nolan Peterson
do they use it for IRS and other bureaucracy too? they would have to train all the old boomers how to use linux
Connor Bell
Where the FUCK is Temple OS?
Angel Hall
No networking. I mean, come on user, it's not the 80s any more. A computer without net access and a modern web browser is basically half a computer.
Camden Anderson
Who the fuck do you think you are to go against the will of god you god damn fbi nigger? Your glowing in dark ass wouldn't know a good OS if it slapped its cock on your face.
Bentley Ramirez
You should be burned, you fucking heretic.
Blake Murphy
Everything that is government or of strategic importance is being converted to Linux...no exceptions. Obviously the educational system is adapting to this policy. They have several distros and some of them have sub-distros that strongly focus on ease of use.
ReactOS is still not ready for use but it's starting to have a decent amount of development.
David Sanders
>sucking Terry Gay Davis's rotting zombie cock >not actually using TempleOS Like pottery
John Carter
I am using Temple OS exclusively on all my machines. In fact, in my company i also installed Temple OS on all computers which my employees use and they are strictly forbidden to use anything else when they are on the clock. Temple OS is by FAR the best OS on the market, and it is also giving me edge over the competition companies which use trash like windows or linux.
Anybody here with experience on distro dev and maintenance of forks? We talked on another thread about making a BSD fork and porting some tools and want to see how the whole process is.
Brayden Garcia
The Linux kernel is part of the Linux operating system.
Voluntarily no but we all are running that shit anyway lmao
Parker Reed
Serious answer, because that is more interesting: get Duktape and write a wrapper for 9front. Duktape is a JavaScript interpreter modeled after Lua. It's written in pure C99 with zero C++ and has high code quality.
Eli Green
Wow, Duktape is sexy tbhfam. I think NetSurf is using it so once that is ported is gonna get used as a daily driver.
Matthew Adams
>Temple OS is by FAR the best OS on the market, and it is also giving me edge over the competition companies which use trash like windows or linux. screamed the janitor as security carried him away and IT was assessing the overnight damage to the company's computers

Grayson Allen
>we all are running that shit anyway Not those of use with an old AMD space heater.
Jayden Brown
Is that the default interface? If it is it's comfy as fuck.
Joseph Jones
where's illumos? where's OS/2?
Michael Price
None of these kernel have a wide gamut of drivers.
Nathan Lopez
That's EDE (edeproject.org). The default on MINIX is just twm, but EDE is the only full desktop environment whose support is maintained.
Daniel Long
>Other kernels under GPL >and HiStar >HiStar is a new operating system okay...
Jack Parker
Why you need a fork to port some tools?
Easton Watson
Reminder that FreeDOS now has a package manager and network is easy to configure. Chances are, it will work perfectly on your i386-P1 machine. wiki.freedos.org/wiki/index.php/FDNPKG

Why is it that Atheros drivers (specifically ath9k) are so highly recommended for Linux and non-existent everywhere else? My shitpad has an Atheros 92X0 or something like that. Looking online, FreeBSD has a driver, but Open and NetBSD only have drivers for earlier Atheros cards. In practice, one of the latest Haiku pre-beta builds recognizes it, but either the interface is fucking up, or the driver is fucking up, because trying to list networks to connect to in the UI crashes. Meanwhile, Intel wifi drivers are Satan to the GNUfags despite kinda working on non-Linux-libre kernels, but are fucking ubiquitous nearly everywhere else.
>It can be built with gcc and clang One of the things we like about Plan 9 is that it DOESN'T use vomit inducing gcc and clang.
Nathan Evans
>voluntarily I voluntarily chose Intel. Not sure if that is what you mean.
Grayson Russell
>no networking Someone here added it last year
Dominic Young
>JNode >Java New Operating System Design Effort what they meant with this
Levi Garcia
Maybe it's easier to reverse engineer the Intel cards but if you aren't willing to sign an NDA? youtube.com/watch?v=WOcYTqoSQ68 (I didn't watch the whole thing)
Add that illegal Windows NT fork. Check betaarchive.
Blake Brooks
Can I run a graphical interface atop of FreeDOS ala Windows 9x?
Robert Anderson
and it is called Shrine, see OP
Isaiah Jones
There's a reason we call you th retard of Jow Forums
Dylan Myers
You mean compiling the NT source code? Isn't it just the kernel though? You still require Windows, or am I mistaken?
Gabriel Murphy
All of these are garbage except for SculptOS (Genode+seL4) which is only only good for servers, and ReactOS and Haiku. Now the last two are decent on the desktop but ReactOS doesn't have enough drivers yet to boot and run well on any hardware from this century. Haiku does, which gives it a massive leg up. WLAN works, iGPU and old ATI graphics work, and it can browse the web pretty well. It's good enough to shitpost so far.
If you really want a good workstation OS I'd recommend OpenIndiana which is an open source continuation of Solaris. It's x86-64 only, which isn't a huge drawback. It comes with MATE and Firefox ESR out of the box which is enough to start getting real work done.
I am a windows guy myself but interested in trying some alternatives (mainly just messing around). Which one would you suggest?
Isaac Bell
React OS and Haiku OS. Haiku will run on real hardware.
Jace Roberts
Does anyone know how /leftypol/ actually reacted to the CoC incident? It bet there was a lot compartmentalization involved.
Joshua Morales
Someone make a galaxy brain meme. 1. Proprietary software 2. GPL, BSD 3. Public domain 4. Illegal forks of leaked code
Connor Thompson
I'm a Communist myself (the principled kind) and I'm utterly repulsed by the Linux CoC and everything surrounding it, including the trannies celebrating the destruction of yet another open source software project. I want them all to be worked to death in a gulag. /leftypol/ isn't even real Communists anyways. They're a bunch of LARPer hedonistic faggots that don't care about anything but ipads and cummies.
Grayson Campbell
>over a thousand registers these companies should just fucking dissolve
Sebastian Green
I just checked /leftypol/ and there's almost nothing talking about it.
It's funny because US vice president during the WW2 was a democratic socialist Wallace, who had some crazy ideas about human life, and worked in close collaboration with American minorities. What's even funnier, he coined the propaganda phrase "the free world" as opposed to Hitler's axis, which was used by many a republican goon, and much later by clueless neo-fascist currents.
Nathaniel Davis
I believe in the collective ownership of land, and in an isolationist high trust society. People of different races don't get along so they should self segregate. I also believe that if you're able to work and you choose not to, you're also choosing not to eat.
>which was used by many a republican goon, and much later by clueless neo-fascist currents What you're calling "neo-fascists" are what, the Alt-Right? They're not fascists. Fascism isn't even real. It's called civilization. Collectivism and strong leadership is the prerequisite for civilization. Anyone who uses the term "fascism" unironically is an absolute dolt. It's just the way that retards know how to screech about the rule of law when they aren't allow to do dumb shit.
